Spring is in the air ~ even though it's snowing

And such is the weather in Western Pennsylvania.  It's okay though because we love broccoli and spinach and lettuce and peas and all that loves cooler weather.  Without our cold spring our veggies don't grow right.

I post almost regularly over at the blogspot site because I can post pictures over there for free.  Don't forget to visit me over there now and then!

This weekend I visited my goldfish.  I had to break up the ice again.  It freezes over so easily.  They are okay in there though since it is deep enough.  They came up for a peek at what was going on, so I gave them a bite to eat.  They look much bigger than last year!  I should be seeing some babies soon too.  When they are born they are all black, so it is difficult to see them when just passing by.  I see them when I'm sitting there for a bit watching in the spring.

I've tried out a practice my British blogging friends have done and I planted up some shallots in a seedling flat.  It's too early here to plant out as it was for them a month ago.  They set them in their greenhouses and watched as they developed roots and tops!  I've never done this before and I'm just so delighted to think I've got a jump on the season this way.  Of course, I had to try out the red onions as well.  We'll see how they do.

I also began to clean out the greenhouse.  My family uses it as a catch-all through the off season so now we need to find places for all the stuff that was left there.  I'm using grow lights at present in the house and also have broccoli, tomatoes and spinach which have come up.  The tomatoes will be transferred to paper pots but the spinach and broccoli will soon go outside.

Pictures will follow shortly!

Hi Juls! I've never heard of starting onions in the greenhouse before, but it makes sense if you want an early start. Very clever. I posted pictures over at the other site.

The fish look pretty big! Do they hibernate during the winter since you couldn't feed them? Not sure how they survive. Anyway--glad they are looking healthy and are becoming more active. Good starts on your garden. I keep thinking I will plant a small container of veggies on my patio..........  *hugs*

Hello Primerozie . Are not your lettuces frozen since the water is iced in the pond .
I am admiring the good job you do with your green house . I have not .

However I planted potatoes ( 200 tubers ) , 4 rows of oinions ( young bulbs ) and 3 rows of shalotts last week .
I had planted before 1 row of cabbage and 1 row of young lettuces . But for those last I have no hope because they already are attacked by ????? I don' t know . I protect them with a net and I spead powder against slugs .
We had snow on this Monday morning for the first time of the year . But this already has disappeared .
Love

Michel

KC : I've seen them Kathy! One of the gals on Blogspot has one and showed a picture. They must be popular there. Good to hear from you ~ hope all is well.

Pam: They do okay down deep enough. Even the frogs over-wintered this year. We put the pump in over the weekend and they've been surfacing more.

Michel: Last year the water cress came back very slowly on its own in a little crevice of the waterfall! I was amazed. The waterlilly over-winters too. We won't see signs of growth for at least a month though.

I have heard that some people use chopped up eggshells around their plants to guard against slugs. Sorry to hear about the lettuces. Perhaps try planting the lettuce in several places around the plot. If insects are eating them, they may not be all through the garden.

Wow! Another big potato harvest in store for you this year. I'm hoping to have more shallots this year. I ordered from a company that hasn't sent them to me yet. The ones I planted this year are left overs from last season, not many but at least some untiul the rest arrive ;)
