Something Good from my Friend Denny

An Embarrassing Revelation for Darwinians

"When a butterfly has to look like a leaf, not only are all the details of a leaf beautifully rendered but markings mimicking grub-bored holes are generously thrown in. "Natural Selection," in the Darwinian sense, could not explain the miraculous coincidence of imitative aspect and imitative behavior, nor could one appeal to the theory of "the struggle for life" when a protective device was carried to a point of mimetic subtlety, exuberance, and luxury far in excess of a predator's power of appreciation. I discovered in nature the nonutilitarian delights that I sought in art. Both were a form of magic, both were a game of intricate enchantment and deception."

The above paragraph was written, not by William Jennings Bryan or Ben Stein, but by the decidedly irreligious author of Lolita and Pale Fire (and, more importantly for my money, the translator of Pushkin), Vladimir Nabokov.

It turns out that Nabokov served as the curator of lepidoptera (butterflies) at Harvard University’s Museum of Comparative Zoology in the 1940s. In fact, according to his biographer, Nabokov "became the authority on the little-studied blue butterflies (Polyommatini) of North and South America" and was " a pioneer in the study of butterflies' microscopic anatomy, distinguishing otherwise almost identical blues by differences in their genital parts." And besides his novels and short stories, he published articles in such scientific journals as The Entomologist, The Bulletin of the Museum of Comparative Zoology, The Lepidopterists' News, and Psyche: A Journal of Entomology.

This creates a problem, of course, for the secularists who have so highly regarded Nabokov's literary work. I mean, a liberal humanist who vigorously disputes evolution -- and does so from the most intricate scientific reasoning?

Richard Dawkins, call your office.

Romans 1:16

" For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek."

(Romans 1:16)
I love this verse
some might be embarrassed by a gospel centered on a crucified Jewish savior, embraced by the lowest classes of people - but Paul is not ashamed. and either am I

the good news of Jesus Christ - has power.

In particular, Rome thought it knew all about power: “Power is the one thing that Rome boasted of the most. Greece might have its philosophy, but Rome had its power.” Despite all their power, the Romans - like all men - were powerless to make themselves righteous before God. The ancient philosopher Seneca called Rome “a cesspool of iniquity” and the ancient writer Juvenal called it a “filthy sewer into which the dregs of the empire flood.”
(Wiersbe).

Existence and Attributes of God, The
By Stephen Charnock

"Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls."  James 1:21

In contrast to an impure manner of living, we should receive the implanted word of God ( with a teachable heart). The purity of the Word of God can save us even in an impure age.

“The first thing, then, is receive. That word ‘receive’ is a very instructive gospel word; it is the door through which God’s grace enters to us. We are not saved by working, but by receiving; not by what we give to God, but by what God gives to us, and we receive from him.” (Spurgeon)

The word of God carries the power of God.

Salt and Light

SaltLight_sm

It is time for the Church to stand up in newfound courage,

not only to defend ourselves, but to attack the enemy. We
can so easily become distracted in a tangent of social work,
and ignore the task of evangelism. But we are told to be
salt and light. Salt has the ability to preserve and light shows
the way in the darkness. We should not have one without the
other. Certainly, we must speak up about issues such as
abortion and other important moral issues. But to refrain from
preaching the Gospel is to point to the wound without supplying
the cure. The Bible says, "And have no fellowship with the
unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them."
(Ephesians 5:5) And the way to expose them is to preach the
light of the glorious Gospel of Christ. The time to do that is
now.
There goes another minute. Gone forever.
Go share your faith while you still have time.
