Man, my last few entries have been depressing.  I'm happy to report that I like med school again, and its because I think I've figured out what I want to do with my life.

I just finished my basic medicine rotation and I remember again why I loved medicine in the first place.  We're taught an incredible body of knowledge and then charged to apply all of it to the care of real human beings, one after another.  It's a special responsibility and honor to be in such a position.  It's intellectually invigorating to take the nuts and bolts of a textbook and apply it to a real situation.  I get a kick out of staying up at night and waiting for what may roll through the door, finding out what is going on, and then putting on my thinking cap to figure out the diagnosis and finding out the best treatment for the cause.

I reread Eddie's reply from my last email and realize that he is right.  Once you find something you love to do within medicine, it makes all the b.s. worth it.  The more I think about it, the more I realize that I have to go after what I love to do, and the more I experience, the more I realize that good ol' internal medicine is the best fit for me.

That said, I'll probably super-specialize anyway.  So far I love Cardiology, but then again, so does everyone else.

Med school sucks.  It has a way of eating you alive, day by day, month by month, until all you have left of yourself is the textbook that stares you back in the face.  This future seemed so bright back in college, when I was one mountain behind.  Too bad I couldnt clearly see what was over that peak, because now that I'm over that hill, the horizon doesn't seem so promising anymore.

Sometimes I sit for hours sifting through networks of old friends on xanga and facebook and think back to how great life was back then.  What I would give to relive high school and college...

Anyone in 04 going to Harvard Yale?

Saturday, October 14, 2006

Let me just say that being in medicine sucks when you are here against your will on a Saturday morning writing vital signs in charts of patients you dont know a thing about for residents that won't do their own work and let you sleep in because you were kept here till 11pm the night before and now you cant study or sleep or do anything for yourself or even go to NYC to see your old friends.

After which I'll be taking a leave of absence from life for about 2 months.  See you all in 2007!
