Emotive Hardcore ("Emo"):
First of all emo isn't a new thing, its been around since the mid 80s. Several bands in the D.C. area saw that punk rock as being too constraining as far as expression, and believed the origional purpose for punk rock was no longer important to many musicians. As a result, these bands broke away from this style, and decided to become more emotional and expiremental with their music. The bands put more and more emotion into their songs, while maintaing the sense or "hardcore" rock that they had broken away from. The emotions these bands put into their songs, however, became more and more agressive, and eventually the term "screamo" came about. This first wave of emo died out in the early 90s.
The second wave of emo came back in 1994, when it was used to label indie music groups. As a result, the term emo was split into two subcategories- hardcore emo and indie emo. In this second wave, emo moved beyond a regional fad, and major record companies across the country were looking for emo bands. However, because this new wave of emo, the indie emo, disliked mainstream attention, many bands strayed away from the musical genere.
The third wave of emo cropped up around the turn of the centuary. Once again, the term emo was misused, as it had been before to describe indie rock. The band Jimmy Eat World brought emo to the stage again as they became more popular. Few people realize, however, that their increased popularity is due to their decision to move away from the actuall emotive hardcore style. But, the media screwed things up again, and continued to call JEW an emo band. As a result, the term emo was redefined a second time. Currently, emo is not a clearly defined genere, and is instead a blanket label given to a variety of bands.
The label used today to describe those girl-pants-wearing black-eyeliner faggots that run around acting retarded is NOT anywhere close to what the actual emotive hardcore musical genere is. Emo as it is used today describes a type of people, much like "prep" or "goth". The "emo" style is supposed to describe incredibly depressed people that sit around writing poems about how sad their lives are. But, when you look at the people we call "emo" today, its a bunch of crazy ass idiots that run around and act retarded. They in no way fit the label (INCORECT LABEL) of "emo". For the most part, the people we describe as being emo dont even fit the incorrect usage of the word. The guys we describe are dumbasses (i.e. Zach). They certainly dont fit the emotive hardcore music genere, and they dont fit the cry-about-life emo that the term has come to describe.
Because the emo style has absolutely nothing to do with emotive hardcore music, or to do with the new definition of emo meaning a person that sits arounds and cries about life, the label should be changed to prevent confusion. From now on, call all "emo" people: FAGS |
