THEOPHILOS"That's the worst of girls," said Edmund to Peter and the Dwarf. "They never can carry a map in their heads." "That's because our heads have something inside them," said Lucy. -from "Prince Caspian" by C.S.Lewis

Currently Watching
Kung Fu Panda [Blu-ray]

Kung Fu Panda's funny. :) My friends told me it wasn't as good as they thought, so maybe it's a good thing I didn't have high expectations (well, knowing Dreamworks' animated films...). Even more than that, the trailer for Wall-E looks really good; Wall-E's so cute! It promises to be quite a charming love story, anyway, hopefully it will be one. Hancock was ok, though I thought midway it just degenerated with the plot twist.

Also, I saw three deliveries overnight (my first night shift, how exciting!), including one Caesarean section. I thought it really ironic how the husbands/partners tried to "coach" their wives through the pain (as if they would understand). One of them said to me, "the more you scream, the better it is,", which just made me wrinkle my face (like, what?). Another asked me if I had any children, which certainly made me open my eyes wide at 4am (does that mean I look old?!?). And I didn't realise how close childbirth is to constipation...the worst constipation you'll ever get in history. It stinks too, with the stench of blood and all (I don't mind the sight of it but the smell gets to you after a while).

But all in all, fascinating stuff, and the midwives were nice to me! After the horror stories I've heard about how certain midwives can ill-treat medical students (perhaps not undeservingly since some of them in the past have been stuck up, apparently), the ladies I was with were very pleasant and helped me at every turn (me being such a "noob" as that was the first day of my rotation!). It was amazing too, to see the look on the mothers' faces change from anguish to joy so quickly...one minute, they were screaming/grunting in absolute pain, and the next, their expressions become of awe and delight when their babies are placed in their arms. Magical, anyway.

Ok, better sleep again (well, really, I woke up at 5pm after coming home in the morning but tomorrow's another early start...and it's so cold here, with the rains and all). Take care! (Actually, I get more sleep in total with night shifts since I'm so exhausted by the time I get back I just sleep and sleep - as opposed to wasting time online or wherever at night...I think I'll opt for night shifts when I start working, which is pretty atypical, I guess...it's nice and quiet at night in the hospitals too...well, depending on which ward you're allocated to)

How... interesting, your bedside view of the births. I have to admit this is something I'm really afraid of. It's the pain, and the lack of control, and the utter lack of all dignity that I'm dreading (and no, I'm not pregnant now and won't be hopefully for some time!). I just don't want to be disgusting, you know? But I suppose there isn't anything I could do to prevent that. I do want children... eventually. Do you think you'll ever have children?

WALL•E was great. We loved it
