| mess in race & ethnic relationsif there is going to be mess...it would probably be in my race & ethnic relations class...9:15 MWF. today's topic: white privilege we watched 2 segments of a news report on privilege in america. the first, an unsurprising depiction of ivy league schools and the enslavement to their endowment by admitting un or underqualified wealthy, "legacy" students. many of my classmates had little problem with the fact that these (already well-off universities) admit hot mess students from wealthy, highly-esteemed families. Their only issue is atleast they could be more upfront about it? upfront about it? what? that's all? if i am bitch-slapped in the face regardless if someone tells me beforehand or not it doesn't make the slap sting any less. another student thought it necessary from an economic vantage point to maintain their institutions' endowment...even when some already claim a 30 billion dollar endowment already. these people want to scream unfair if some minority gets a job with consideration to their race, but this is alright in fact...its economical? mess. the second installment of the video highlighted the discrepancy within the criminal justice when sentencing black males versus white males. the second segment made me and many other students well up in tears. one student's reductionistic assessment stated, "money talks." as if the jaws of wealth in America weren't pried open by the hands of injustice. what benefits one group disenfranchises the other...its the same beast. he didn't get it. but atleast he's in the class...he has the possibility of getting it...dr. nieves won't stand for ignorance.
