Happy Blogging New Year!

Blogging, like all trends, is constantly redefining itself in the context of socialization. What originally started as an opportunity for bloggers to log their daily thoughts and musings for personal or public consumption has morphed into a modified chat room that continues to redefine itself. During the past year, many students have jumped off the Xanga blog for a more interactive site as Facebook or My Space. The decision to move is predominately related to a tremendous need for feedback or comments. Since few readers actually take the time to post comments, the blogger usually concludes that no one reads their postings.

This is not surprising to me since many teenagers are highly social thus desiring communication over posting a diary or journal which may or may not be read. Being apart of a community is so important for adolescents that it always produces behavioral changes in hairstyles, clothing, possessions, and now blog sites! Those who truly use Xanga for its designed purpose are the twenty-somethings who adopted Xanga while in college.

Teenagers are not necessarily prone to record journal or dairy entries for the whole world to read because it does not fulfill their need for interaction. However, an older individual will take the time to compose their thoughts or life exploits as an editor or reporter of a newspaper. Their postings are more informative and purpose-driven while a teenager may not share that need or purpose.

As a youth ministry educator and youth minister, I have sought to use all types of  technology to proclaim the gospel and promote events. Recently, I have used my Xanga page as a means of promoting youth events, but like all trendy forms of technology, the audience rapidly changed this fall. With the departure or flight of our younger bloggers to other locations, I have found my "voice" blowing among the leafless trees! Sigh! So, if no one responds to my blogs should I cease posting?

To answer this question, I need to revisit the original purpose of a blog. In a world dedicated to self-promotion, blogging became a perfect outlet for the postmodern individual. Since life is "all about me" it made perfect since for many to promote their daily lives for all to see. In the business world, many corporations found a new way to communicate in the online community and hired bloggers to promote their products and services. In the communication world, blogging is a natural extension of those who communicate for a living. For aspiring writers blogging has become a opportunity to refine a craft. So where does blogging apply for a middle-aged associate pastor?

Well, people like me have been blogging in church newsletters all of our ministerial lives! When I started in my first church in 1980, I was required to write a weekly article for the church newsletter, and as I look backwards, I have concluded that ministers have always blogged! Since blogging needs a defined purpose in order to remain focused and consistent, I have found a unique opportunity to write as I have always written: for the advancement of the Kingdom of God!

I have been edified and entertained during the past year by the postings of Drew Pinkley, Erin Lenihan, Amanda Jennewein, Melissa Haley, and Emily Kalna. I do not intend to slight others who post, but it is my opinion that the insight these individuals possess has truly followed the path of pure blogging. Please continue to post your thoughts for all to read and be blessed by your sense of humor and unique ability to let us see through the lens of your mind's eye as God leads you down your appointed steps of life.

I will continue my postings in 2007 with more focus upon issues which concern me. I am not sure if they will be read, but I will require my youth ministry students to read them! They will have no choice!

Brothers, We Are Not Professionals: A Plea to Pastors for Radical Ministry

I heard on KMOX last week that the remaining fall football schedule for a team in North Dakota was cancelled for the team's protection! The coach feared for the physical health of his team and the school board agreed. Seems like the team not only lost the first four games of the season, but their lives were at stake as well. How many other schools across the nation need to do the same, but no one has the guts to admit it? What do you think?

Segue: If your life was similar to the football team in that you may be participating in behaviors which may be detrimental to your health both spiritually and physically, would you be able to stop? Some believe they can quit doing things whenever they choose. I have heard testimonies of people quitting smoking cold turkey. I have also heard the same from those who were into drugs and alcohol. Is this ability a demonstration of the inner strength mankind possesses or is there something more operating in the background? What do you think? Fire away!

With homecoming now being an event in the past, we have a few to ponder for the future.

Service Projects
The Youth Council members are working to provide more opportunities for ministry oriented service projects. The Parent's Night Out is just the beginning of a monthly ministry. The next project will be connected with the H.S. Dnow, and we are in contact with the Hand'n Hand Pregnancy Center for a project. We are also discussing helping sort things at the Haitian ministry warehouse. If you have any ideas for service/ministry projects, email me.

I could not let this 'funny' alone. I hope you enjoy it.

Well, it's been wild and crazy since our return from Tblisi! I'm in my usual Fall whirlwind at church which means I'm doing a whole lot behind the scene for many of our ministries which begin this week on their new schedules.

Today, Weston and I met with a few local youth ministers to plan our MidWinter Retreat (January 12-14), big time DNow with Thomas Young (March 9-11), and Theology Camp (June 11-15). Mark your calendars today!

If you know of any students who do not subscribe to my blog, please encourage them to join my little world! I'll be sending messages like this in addition to some serious stuff to brighten your week!

BTW- Don't forget the Fenton outreach project Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in Fenton Park. And for all the Jr. High men and women, we meet this weekend for our annual Dnow at the Carpenter home.

A DIETER'S PRAYER

Lord, grant me the strength that I may not fall Into the clutches of cholesterol.

At polyunsaturates, I'll never mutter,

For the road to Hell is paved with butter.

And cake is cursed and cream is awful

And Satan is hiding in every waffle.

Beelzebub is a chocolate drop

And Lucifer is a lollipop.

Teach me the evils of hollandaise,

Of pasta and globs of mayonnaise.

And crisp fried chicken from the South -- Lord, if you love me, shut my mouth.

HPIM0894It has been one month since my last post, but two mission trips have occupied my time. I'll post later about the trip to the Republic of Georgia. I'm still in the clutches of jet lag! I can now relate to Erin and Amanda in more than a sympathetic mode! I hope you enjoy this humorous post in the meanwhile.

CATS & TEENAGERS

For all of you with teenagers or who have had teenagers, you may want to know why they really have a lot in common with cats:

1. Neither teenagers nor cats turn their heads when you call them by name.

2. No matter what you do for them, it is not enough. Indeed, all humane efforts are barely adequate to compensate for the privilege of waiting on them hand and foot.

3. You rarely see a cat walking outside of the house with an adult human being, and it can be safely said that no teenager in his or her right mind wants to be seen in public with his or her parents.

4. Even if you tell jokes as well as Jay Leno, neither your cat nor your teen will ever crack a smile.

5. No cat or teenager shares your taste in music.

6. Cats and teenagers can lie on the living-room sofa for hours on end without moving, barely breathing.

7. Cats have nine lives. Teenagers live as if they did.

8. Cats and teenagers yawn in exactly the same manner, communicating that ultimate human ecstasy -- a sense of complete and utter boredom.

9. Cats and teenagers do not improve anyone's furniture.

10. Cats that are free to roam outside sometimes have been known to return in the middle of the night to deposit a dead animal in your bedroom. Teenagers are not above that sort of behavior.

Thus, if you must raise teenagers, the best sources of advice are not other parents, but veterinarians. It is also a good idea to keep a guidebook on cats at hand at all times. And remember, above all else, put out the food and do not make any sudden moves in their direction. When they make up their minds, they will finally come to you for some affection and comfort, and it will be a triumphant moment for all concerned.
