A lot has happened since I last updated - got married, moved and did a lot of other things. I'm not going to say a final goodbye to my Xanga, but since we are now one :) Ben and I have started a new blog together. Please check it out!
- I just returned from a week-long mission trip to New Orleans with 12 teenagers and 2 other adults (including my future esposo). It was tiring and challenging, but also a lot of fun and quite rewarding. We took a quick tour of the Ninth Ward (where most of the major Katrina damage was done) and the French Quarter, went on prayer walks to meet people and pray for them, led a day of Vacation Bible School, hung dry wall and insulation, mowed lawns, handed out bottled water and canned goods, served free lunch at a men's shelter...all the while making some minor yet noticeable sacrifices like eating cold sandwiches for lunch every day, sleeping in very close quarters with several other people, and trying to take showers in 6 minutes or less (including the undressing and dressing time - this is significant when it's 90-something degrees outside where the showers are and your clothes are sticking to you like a second skin). But really those were just tiny inconveniences in comparison to the privilege it was to just help meet needs in a place where there are SO many needs.
- Upon my return from New Orleans, I did the first thing that anyone would do - created a Facebook. Yes, I've joined the Facebook cult and I must say I am hooked. This may be a liability in light of the fact that I left my job right before I went to NOLA and I will have a lot more flexible time in the coming weeks. Hopefully I will spend my time working on the wedding/moving stuff that I need to accomplish instead of spending too much time trying to add new applications to my Facebook or trying to add tons of new friends. Not gonna lie; it's been pretty cool reconnecting with old friends from high school and college, as well as just making a new connection with people I already see and talk to currently. I am quite proud of the fact that I have gained my first 40 friends in less than 24 hours.
- As I mentioned before, I am no longer with the Rockets. I left on June 15 and will now (sort of) begin my search for a new job near Beantown while also finishing up wedding plans. Please keep me and Ben in your prayers as we prepare for our wedding and move.
I got a big kick out of this...heard about it through Bill Simmons'
column (the Sports Guy) on ESPN.com. I don't know why, but it makes me
laugh every time I watch it. And then I'm reminded of how much I wish
they would release the later seasons on DVD, when Brandon and Kelly
were together. After they broke up it was all downhill, in my opinion.
Upon reading Jon's comment about last week's season finale of The Office - which is definitely my current favorite show - I thought I'd post a few guesses on what I think will happen next season. For anyone who also watches, I would love to know your predictions as well.
- There will be many funny storylines having to do with Ryan now basically being Michael's boss, and Michael having a hard time with it.
- Pam and Jim won't officially be a couple, but they will be more than friends and the sexual tension between them will increase.
- Roy will return and will have made some dramatic changes for the better to his lifestyle and behavior. Pam will then wonder if she should've given Roy more of a chance, but then Roy will do something reverting back to his old ways and Pam will realize she made the right decision.
- Toby will continue to subtlely pine after Pam and watch sadly as she and Jim flirt with each other. But he won't really do anything about it. Or maybe he'll give her a small but meaningful gift at Christmas or something.
- Having been dumped by Ryan, Kelly will set her sights on another guy in the office. I suspect Jim because he's the only other attractive one. She will flirt with him, but her advances will only serve as a source of awkwardness and humor for Jim and Pam.
- We will continue to see more of Jan's instability as she findsanother job - very different from her previous position in Corporate. I don't know what it will be, but it'll be something that shows off her "increased assets" and makes Michael uncomfortable.
- We will see more of Creed and his antics. He will butt heads with Dwight and/or Andy somewhere along the way.
- Dwight and Angela's relationship will become more a part of the storylines. Perhaps Pam and Jim will attempt to out them.
- Karen will only be in a few episodes at the beginning of the season to bring some closure to her and Jim's relationship. Not having gotten the job in Corporate, she'll quit the Scranton branch and move elsewhere. Or she may just be covered in a brief recap in the first episode, similarly to the way we found out that Pam had called off the wedding, and we only saw the aftermath of it (Pam and Roy eating the dinners every day for lunch).
- Andy will finally win Dwight's trust - possibly even his admiration, even though Dwight will never admit it. Then, either Andy will use this new power to leapfrog Dwight to become Michael's new sidekick, or Andy and Dwight will become friends (at least on the outside) and realize that together they can sway Michael to do certain things that they want. Jim will of course see all of this and manipulate all three of them for his and Pam's amusement.
OK, that's enough for now. What are your predictions?
Haven't xanga-ed in a while. Miscellaneous thoughts...
Today I went and got a pedicure at the mall. When I walked in, there were no other customers, and the four ladies that worked at the nail place were watching a Madonna concert video on the plasma TVs. Things got fairly awkward when the performance became basically a very large orgy. I'm pretty sensitive to things like that - not that they shouldn't bother me, but I find that anything having to do with sexually immoral behavior disturbs me deeply. And this was pretty much porn (I think heterosexual and homosexual) with a tiny bit of clothing. So while the ladies expressed their surprise and astonishment in Vietnamese (yet continued to watch), I had to stare at the cart of nail supplies and try to tune it out. Not fun. And the pedicure wasn't that great.
I also got my GapCard bill in the mail and discovered that for the first time ever, I was late on a payment and got charged a $25 late fee plus a $1 finance charge. I was pretty angry about that. And it was ironic because I had JUST had the thought recently that I had never been late on a credit card payment. I feel similar to the way I did when I got my first B on a report card.
It is very hard not to count down the days until my last day at my job and my wedding. I am looking forward to both of those days so much, even though I know there will be some sadness in them coming and going, too. For my job, obviously I will miss my friends, and the perks and (perceived) glamour of being a part of that organization. For my wedding, I will miss the whole idea of being a bride and knowing that things like David's Bridal and The Knot are actually relevant to me; having people be really excited for me (and Ben); the attention of bridal showers and photography sessions; and just generally the anticipation of something that I've been waiting my whole life for. This is really selfish, but since Ben and I got engaged, I have even been sort of jealous and a tiny bit bitter whenever anyone else announces their own engagement - I guess because then the attention gets shifted over to someone else and we become like old news. I think I might even feel that way a bit after we get married and then go to or hear about other people's weddings. But I know I need to get over that. Pretty rude, huh?
I miss football. Someone please invite me to your fantasy league next season. I was a complete Melinda Doolittle last year in my rookie fantasy football season. I smoked the competition nearly every week, only to finish fourth in the playoffs. Next year I intend to at least place in the top three, with my little helmet or avatar getting a place of honor on the final standings page.
OK, time to go watch The Office season finale. It's going to be an agonizing 4-5 months waiting for the next new episode!
