Church Secrecy

It seems to me that if you have a religion and you claim that your religion is "true" then you don't need the keep secrets.  If God is on your side, then why do you need to keep things secret?  Won't God take care of things?

One common means the cult leaders use to control their followers is to control the flow of information.  If you have a secret handbook that only the top leaders share, then you don't have to worry about the rank and file getting upset over what's in your secret handbook.

It appears that the LDS church feels that it needs to keep secrets.  When it's confidential handbook for church leaders was leaked, they lawyered up and decided to threaten those who posted the material.  They were successful in bullying the site Scribd.com.  However, they've been unsuccessful in bullying WikiLeaks.

If you're interested, here's the WikiLeaks page and here's the Slashdot article about the dispute.

I would tell you what I think about this but it is a religious secret and only the leadership needs to know our opinion on this issue.

Mormons are funny, but not as nearly as funny as Scientologists. =)

No one is as funny as scientologists. From the wikileak page on it, the kind of stuff in it, is the kind of stuff church members/believers would already know about/agree with it's not like they were saying anything godawful (no pun intended). There is no need for that secrecy...unless the church-goers don't know that mormons oppose sperm donation and surrogate motherhood....*dramatic music*

I don't find anything at all surprising in this material. Having been in the church, having the church refuse to remove my name, none of this is news to me. I don't know, though, why they want to keep it a secret:

Unless it's because they don't want anyone knowing that their official membership numbers are highly inflated by counting those who came in one door and went out the other. Like me. Their bias against such things as alternative medicine, alternative lifestyle, and their lust for power and control of their members is (I thought) well-known.

Now, if it talked about the changes in the Book of Mormon, or the temple ceremony, and doctrines once preached as God-given but changed for political correctness, that would be an interesting read, indeed.
