Hey Everyone.

Boy has it been awhile since I last wrote.  Two months.  A lot has been going on, mainly packing though.  We have about three months left in Kenya before we fly out (graduation night) and its been kinda hectic trying to pack and sell a lot of things.  We just got in today from the three day trip, followed closely by the rain (getting stuck in the mud wasnt on our schedule) but we blew a tire this morning (not fun) and I do kinda literally mean "blew".  One moment it was fine, the next moment we were swerving off the road.  Not fun.  It only took 5-10 minutes to change it since there were five of us in the car.  It was an experience.  I would rather have a flat tire then get stuck in the mud (as long as there is a spare tire in the car) because changing a tire normally takes a whole lot less time then trying to pull a fully loaded land cruiser out of the mud.  :)

Well, we are here in Nairobi for another two weeks so if anyone wants to write me, write to jiraveiadreams@yahoo.com           I should be able to check it unless the internet connection doesnt die around here again (or else little kids dont claim the computer for the games)  that was frustrating.

Well, I had better get going.  Im going back to college when I get back to the states (in Virginia) and so I am looking up scholorships.  fun fun fun! write back!

Well, its been about a month and a half since I last wrote, so I thought that it was about time.  I started posting a blog yesterday, but got called out to do go with my parents on some errands in town, so, I am posting today, Valentines Day.  I found some interesting things on the history of Valentines Day and thought that I would share them, due to this anti-singles holiday.

As early as the fourth century B.C., the Romans engaged in an annual young man's rite to passage to the God Lupercus. The names of the teenage women were placed in a box and drawn at random by adolescent men; thus, a man was assigned a woman companion for the duration of the year, after which another lottery was staged. After eight hundred years of this cruel practice, the early church fathers sought to end this practice... They found an answer in Valentine, a bishop who had been martyred some two hundred years earlier.

According to church tradition St. Valentine was a priest near Rome in about the year 270 A.D. At that time the Roman Emperor Claudius-II who had issued an edict forbidding marriage.
This was around when the heyday of Roman empire had almost come to an end. Lack of quality administrators led to frequent civil strife. Learning declined, taxation increased, and trade slumped to a low, precarious level. And the Gauls, Slavs, Huns, Turks and Mongolians from Northern Europe and Asian increased their pressure on the empire's boundaries. The empire was grown too large to be shielded from external aggression and internal chaos with existing forces. Thus more of capable men were required to be recruited as soldiers and officers. When Claudius became the emperor, he felt that married men were more emotionally attached to their families, and thus, will not make good soldiers. So to assure quality soldiers, he banned marriage.
Valentine, a bishop , seeing the trauma of young lovers, met them in a secret place, and joined them in the sacrament of matrimony. Claudius learned of this "friend of lovers," and had him arrested. The emperor, impressed with the young priest's dignity and conviction, attempted to convert him to the roman gods, to save him from certain execution. Valentine refused to recognize Roman Gods and even attempted to convert the emperor, knowing the consequences fully.
On February 24, 270, Valentine was executed.

While Valentine was in prison awaiting his fate, he came in contact with his jailor, Asterius. The jailor had a blind daughter. Asterius requested him to heal his daughter. Through his faith he miraculously restored the sight of Asterius' daughter. Just before his execution, he asked for a pen and paper from his jailor, and signed a farewell message to her "From Your Valentine," a phrase that lived ever after.

Valentine thus become a Patron Saint, and spiritual overseer of an annual festival. The festival involved young Romans offering women they admired, and wished to court, handwritten greetings of affection on February 14. The greeting cards acquired St.Valentine's name.

The Valentine's Day card spread with Christianity, and is now celebrated all over the world. One of the earliest card was sent in 1415 by Charles, duke of Orleans, to his wife while he was a prisoner in the Tower of London. The card is now preserved in the British Museum.

And that is my history of Valentines Day.  Life nowadays it is too easy to be a Christian in the States.  Faith isnt as strong as it used to be because we are just accepting of everyone and everything.  Our faith isnt really tested.  Most Christians are "Luke-warm", not boiling hot.

We are back in Nairobi, the main city (its on the map i put up awhile ago) and it has been an interesting holiday season.  First of all, thanksgiving was spent at a missionary conference where I worked in the nursery (0-2 years old).  Christmas was spent in the desert where we live.  And yes, we DID have a white christmas (the ground is LOADED with salt and so when it rains and the water evaporates, it pulls the salt to the surface and the ground is covered in the white salt).  New Years Eve, now that was an experience that I will NEVER forget.  We got stuck in the mud for 9 1/2 hours (from 4pm to 1:30am) and had to be pulled out by a tractor.  Then we had to drive a few hours to get to the hotel (we got there about 5:30) and so 6-8am was spent sleeping and then we got up and drove the rest of the way to Nairobi.  We got stuck on the 30th and pulled out on the 31st.  But we are here and finally catching up on our sleep.  Five people sleeping in one car is really not that fun or confortable.  There were over 13 other vehicles stuck there too.

Rascal Flatts

"Skin"

Sarabeth is scared to death
To hear what the doctor will say
She hasn't been well
Since the day that she fell
And the bruise, it just won't go away
So she sits and she waits with her mother and dad
Flips through an old magazine
Till the nurse with a smile
Stands at the door
And says will you please come with me

Sarabeth is scared to death
Cause the doctor just told her the news
Between the red cells and white
Something's not right
But we're gonna take care of you

Six chances in ten it won't come back again
With the therapy were gonna try
It's just been approved
It's the strongest there is
I think we caught it in time

Sarabeth closes her eyes
And she dreams she's dancing
Around and around without any cares
And her very first love is holding her close
And the soft wind is blowing her hair

Sarabeth is scared to death
As she sits holding her mom
Cause it would be a mistake
For someone to take
A girl with no hair to the prom

For, just this morning right there on her pillow
Was the cruelest of any surprise
And she cried when she gathered it all in her hands
The proof that she couldn't deny

Sarabeth closes her eyes
And she dreams she's dancing
Around and around without any cares
And her very first love was holding her close
And the soft wind is blowing her hair

Its quarter to seven
That boys at the door
And her daddy ushers him in
And when he takes off his cap
They all start to cry
Cause this mornin where his hair had been
Softly she touches just skin

And they go dancin
Around and around without any cares
And her very first true love is holding her close
And for a moment she isn't scared

I just love this song.  It's just so sad.
