Krispy Kreme hits the Middle East

Tonight the city sleeps in a sweet glazed comatose.  Tonight I went to Krispy Kreme in Saudi Arabia for the first time.  There are two branches located in malls in the capital city.  The first one in the Middle East was in Kuwait, and now Saudi Arabia has jumped on the doughnut board.  I snapped a photo because I had to prove it to you, but most people don’t take kindly to public photos so it was taken quickly, and from a distance.   The place was swarming with black abayas and white thobes pointing to doughnut selections.  The abaya is the veils the women wear, and thobes, are the outfit that the men wear.  So there you have it, America in its purest, sweetest and least harmful format, other than raising cholesterol levels, has hit the Middle East. They could use a few of these in Baghdad; it might just ease the tensions.

Needless to say it has been a great weekend.  Have you ever tried the Karamel crunch?  OMG.  We also have a long weekend due to the OPEC meeting being held here.  So doughnuts...oil...who can beat that?

So, as the US battles ever increasing rates of obesity nationwide, we have sent a sugar coated ambassador to help other countries follow in our wake.  Hmmm.

Actually, KKs are delicious, but I really try to avoid eating them because they can really lay on the pounds.  I've heard that the company is spreading to countries around the world.  I hope other nations have better self discipline than we do here.  Being overweight is very unhealthy and losing the weight once you've gained it can be very difficult. (The voice of experience speaks. And I'm not as overweight as many.)

I know what you are saying and recent studies on ameinfo.com say that diabetes and health problems are on the rise due to the recent changes in foods in the Middle East from organic an dlow sugar to processed and high sugar foods.  This is not unlike what happened to the Native Americans when new foods were introduced to them centuries ago in North America.  However, all of that aside, its neat somehow to see a bunch of people dressed so exotically and un-Americanly rushing to get a fix of Americana.  Krispy Kreme are about as American as a 50's diner where the waitresses serve you on roller skates and wear poodle skirts.

LOL.  That is pretty funny.  I remember when McDonalds went to Japan and watching the video on TV of people rushing in to get a Big Mac.  They were spending an unbelievable amount of money (much higher than here) for those tasty round packages of fat and cholestrol.  Gotta love it.
