BS Baseball

"What is a Japan?" Photo of the Week

Orix Buffaloes mascot

The professional baseball team based in Kobe/Osaka is the Orix Buffaloes.  On their hats, uniforms, and baseball memorbalia are the letters BS. Pictured here is a stuffed animal of the team's mascot, possibly the dorkiest mascot in professional sports history.  Another funny thing about Japan is that the two main satelite cable chanels are called BS 1 and 2! That's a bunch of BS!

To be Japanese means to own a small car and have insane parking skills.

A National Symbol

"What is a Japan?" Photo of the Week

HPIM0303

The Himeji Castle is a symbol of harmony, strength and pride.

Answer to last week's question: The town of Karuizawa is located at the base of an active volcano which is known to spew out volcanic rock and ash.

Extra Safe School Kids

"What is a Japan?" Photo of the Week

Karuizawa school kids in helmets

Elementary school kids walk home from school.  They are all wearing helmets.  The town of Karuizawa is one of the few places in Japan where the kids do this. Why do you think they wear helmets?

Hint: It is a safety measure that has to do with where this town is located.
