I'm looking to this weekend when I can go home and spend a couple days with my family out at the farm - and celebrate Mother's Day too, of course!

I'm also in the process of gearing up for Mercer Community Vacation Bible School again - I'm so excited! We're doing SonForce - similar to JoyTrek, which was, I think, my favorite Bible School of all time growing up. I'm doing the music again so I've got some memorizing and moving around to do - the kids do such an awesome job of learning all the words and actions in a week...I'm always so proud of them. And, of course, the best part is that we are able to share the gospel with them and see them grow in Christ!!

Anyway, that's just a quick update. Take care and God bless.

Shell

I feel good......

Howdy all!!!

Wow - I can't believe it's been almost a year since I've written! Guess crazy life just gets in the way sometimes. Thankfully, my now crazy life will be shifting gears to another kind of crazy in approximately 19 days :)

Yep, that's right. In about 19 days I'll be graduating from Medcenter One College of Nursing with my BSN - then all that's left is to take my boards and I'm officially an RN!! Woo Hoo!! I have terrible Senioritis right now - I never used to procrastinate, but I'm hitting the "don't care" stage and am finding I have less and less motivation for school. The fire for school has officially died and I am BURNED OUT! :) lol lol...at least I know that Sarah (my roommate) feels the same way and so does pretty much every other person in our entire nursing class lol lol....

My last rotation has been mental health - been everywhere from the State Hospital in Jamestown to the acute psych floor at MCO, to the state pen. - and then at YCC (the state Youth Correctional Center.) Much to my surprise, I really enjoyed YCC - I don't know if I'd want to ever do nursing there full-time, but for some reason, II don't think I'd mind doing it part-time someday....Go figure...the nurse we had their as a preceptor was awesome too - I really enjoyed talking with her about different issues, as well as the independence she allowed us in caring for the kids their and doing the various nursing tasks.

I've recently begun to enjoy life again the last 3 months or so....I've been able to hit Bible Study on Sunday eves more often lately and I've actually been able to hang out with some of my friends! Valentine's Day we got together with all our friends from Bible Study for a lasagna dinner. On President's Day Barb, Sarah and I were had some fun playing a couple of the guys in tackle football - they won (barely - it's along story), but we had a good time anyway. Of course, we owed the guys supper after this so the Friday before Spring Break (the day after we got back from the State Hospital in Jamestown - and no we weren't patients - we were there as students from the college lol) we cooked the guys steak and baked potatoes, spinach with cream/vinegar topping, and homemade cherry pie. Talk about spoiled!!! :) lol....we also went on a "treasure hunt" and made them find all kinds of crazy things - each team (guys vs. girls), had 1/2 hr. to find 10 items on the list the other team had prepared for them. We found some interesting things - lol...I mean, did you know that gas stations GIVE AWAY the little match books? Yeah - you shoulda seen the look I got when I asked the clerk if I could buy 1 match book - he was like "Umm, they're free." lol lol - oh yeah did I feel like a dumb blonde lol lol... oh well, live and learn!!

Anyways, it's been such an awesome blessing to hang out with Christian guys who don't mind the fact that we're a little weird lol lol - and who obviously are on fire for the Lord. They even get "Flower Power" notes on their vehicles every once in a while...keeps them on their toes. We're still waiting for their retaliation lol lol....

I've officially put in my notice at work for them not to put me on the schedule after May 6th - I'm really going to miss working at TL - I almost cried when I put my notice in the book - I don't think nights will be the same without DeAnn and our crazy conversations and laughing at all the stupid things we do...and of course, I don't know what I'll do without Aron - who's going to attempt to throw whoopee cushions under me in the middle of the night, put "kick me" signs on my back, decorate my car antenna with thread, put depends on my steering wheel, etc. etc....and then who's bag can I stuff big blue pads in or send on treasure hunts that lead to to "tagged" double D bras hanging from the top shelf of the magic closet???? lol lol....And of course, I'm going to miss all the laughs with nurses Aileen and Shirely and all my other coworkers that I've come to be friends with over the last 4 years. Sounds crazy but I'm really going to miss them all - and all of the residents too, as weird as that may sound. You kind get attached to them and miss them when they're not around anymore.

I actually graduate May 12th at 3 PM - and I start work on June 2 - I might let the TL hospital know I'm available a few days in between there if they need me - but I'm going to be busy moving into our new apt. (Sarah and I) and studying for the NCLEX Exam (state boards/licensing exam) - and then the week of Memorial Day I'm going to be helping with the Mercer Community Bible School again. I'm super excited for that - but this year I hope the music comes with actions so I don't have to spend many nights making up my own - (imagine what I looked like dancing around the room doing actions by myself when I was making them up lol eiyayei hahaha ).

Anyways, I have to finish some work - I have just a few pics to put into the church booklet yet so I better get that done - and then I need to finish some of the trivial homework I have. I pray the Lord is blessing you all and that you recognize His presence. Take care and hope to hear from you soon!

Love Shell

Psalm 86:11

"Teach me your way, O Lord, and I will walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.'

Monday, June 27, 2005

Hello all...

Just wanted to say hello and how're ya doing to everyone....not much up here - I'm working of course, but have also found time to do some fun things like paint Aunt Lydia's tire with lumpy gravel paint (long story lol lol) (and of course be treated to a cool can of Black Cherry pop while I was at it lol)...spend some time with my family on Father's Day (how's that sunburn, Case?? hehehe), and hang out with some friends on a couple different occasions.

I've also managed, of course, to have quite the interesting couple of weeks at the hospital. The black cloud over my head is headed elsewhere I'm hoping lol...you see....

We just got a new whirlpool tub at the hospital, but the trick is that you can't fill it up until you have the patient in (cuz you have to open the door) and you can't open the door until it is completely drained. So yes, of course, I managed to open the door and "WHOOSH!!!" out came a bunch of tub water, which ran not only out the tub room and into into the hallway, but also down the hole in the floor (that our maintenance man hadn't filled in yet) and straight on through the basement lab floor. Yay...but the buck doesn't stop there!!!....

A few days later we were making popcorn, and of course, the microwave decides to malfunction and burn it, and set off the fire alarm in the middle of the night lol....I swear it was just waiting for me to come on shift...grrr....

And then, a few days later, (yes, there is more), I'm driving to work (Nights), and half way to Mercer my headlights suddenly go out, my interior lights dim on, I lose power and my speedometer says I'm going 85 and I'm really going like 10. So I drive to the church, call my folks, and let the hospital know I'm going to be late because my car just died. lol......turns out I needed a new alternator.....they say bad things come in 3's and I'm hoping I'm done for a while now......haha oh my....

This coming weekend is Mercer Centennial www.mercernd.com and I'm going to make the most of it...I'm especially excited to sing in the Community Choir that's performing for the community church service on Sunday...I miss choir and singing as much as I used to...hopefully once I'm done with school I can do more of that again!!! :) I'm also looking forward to the parade and the "Old Time" music that's going to be going on...oh hahaha and I can't wait to see the lawn mower races! Mercer probably has the best track in the country by now!! lol

Which reminds me....my dad managed to hit his head with the post pounder the other day while pounding posts for the lawn mower race track (he doesn't know how he managed that one!) and knock a nice sized gash into it.....no stitches, of course, as he was to stubborn to go to the doc to have it looked at, but I guess it bled pretty good for a while and now he's fine...eiyayaei...really I wish he could tell you all the story cuz it's terribly funny when he tells it but praise God we can laugh and that it wasn't more serious.

So let's see now...Spent the last 3 eves working....yesterday (Sat.) was absolutely nuts, I can't even explain how insane it was...and when the confused, already agitated residents fight, whoa baby!!! look out!!! lol.... It's worse than a cat fight...:)

I've got the day off tomorrow...(yep, a day off!!! They do occur so if you need to get a hold of me don't give up hope- lol lol) ...so I'm going to do some cleaning, maybe mowing lawn if it's dry enough...we had an awesome thunderstorm tonight with tons of bolt and cloud lightning that completely lit things up...but it also dumped a ton of rain on us so we'll have to see how long it takes for things to dry up.

I had to laugh tonight because as I was sitting here I had one of those "revelation" type deals...ok not quite that dramatic but something similar to that...it never ceases to amaze me how one simple word such as car, or a simple object like a hat can set off an entire set of interesting realizations...haha I'm sure I sound nuts....but it was just one of those weird things that happened and I just started laughing because the way it happened was so dumb lol lol...anyways, if you want to know what the realization was, you'll have to ask lol lol...

Well, I guess that's all for now. Praying that each of you will be held in God's arms this week...take care and hope to hear from you soon!

In His Joy,

Yep, I'm at work and it seems like an eternity since I"ve actually made normal contact with you all, so here goes! :)

Not much has been going on here in ND.....school is absolutely nuts of course: I'm getting research-papered out, so I'm thrilled that the end of the school year is coming fast...in fact, it's about 53 days or so according to the Senior's countdown calendar. Yay!!!

I'm looking to spend my summer at home (probably my last there)...I'll still be working at the hospital...but doing an internship there 3 or so days a week and aide work 2 days a week if all works out as planned.

Thursday nights I"m still attending a women's Bible Study which is totally awesome...it's a bunch of gals around my age getting together for the study...right now we're going through Max Lucado's Experiencing the Heart of Jesus....totally love it...I recommend it if you're looking for something to help get you more into the Word...it's actually set up to do one section each day, but we only do 2 sections a week, sometimes only 1 depending on the week everyone has ahead of them...but anyways, it is an awesome study and the girls there are great...it's so awesome to get together with other believers and learn more and more about the character and love of Christ.

Other than Thurs. nights and work, I don't really get out much right now. We try to take a break each day and go for a walk...outdoors if it's nice, but if it's not, we go mall walking (yep, like the old folks hahaha)....it's just feels so good to get a break, expend some energy, and get a change of scenery for awhile. I'm looking forward to this summer when I may actually have some time to do other activities besides studying...In July my mom, my coworker and friend Deann, and her mom have already made plans to go up to the state fair and see Tim McGraw, Big and Rich, and Montgomery Gentry.....we are so "Gone!" :) for those concerts!! We're all skipping out on Terry Clark, as she's not a favorite...just don't like her music style I guess. But anyways, that should be fun, and I'm excited to get to some more concerts again....

Which reminds me....the Newsboys are coming to Bismarck in March so Sarah and I are making plans for that....tickets aren't on sale yet but we're going to be getting them when they do....seeing as the month of April is nuts with school and we won't have time to actually celebrate our birthday's, we're going to go the concert and make that our birthday celebration - a month early, but oh well!!! :)

We've had a beautiful couple of days here in ND....the air has just been so fresh and invigorating....it's been in the 50's, and when you step outside, you can just feel the light crispness of the air seep into your lungs...and it feels so good. We decided to take our Thurs. walk down at one of the parks in Bis and it was so great....like I said, the weather was so beautiful and we were so blessed to have been able to enjoy it!

Let's see...any other interesting news?? Oh, lol....yeah I totally sliced my hand the other day....I was washing this glass and all of a sudden it just broke and my dishwater turned red.....so I bled for like 45 minutes before I finally got it to stop, and then nicely bandaged myself up lol...of all dumb things to happen.....and it would happen to me too...eiyayeiyayei..lol lol

Oh...and a quick update on my grandparents...

Great-Grandma Helen is doing well and is being sent to stay at home with my Grandma Marlys and Grandpa Harley.....she can't put any pressure on the broken knee for at least 4 more weeks but the doctor says for now she can stay with my grandparents and do her therapies there...we are continuing to pray for her strength, health, healing, and good spirits. She is such a positive person and she knows God is right there by her side....

Grandpa Harley is going to start radiation treatments in April....the radiologist who looked at his test results is afraid there might be slight metastisis to some of the small cells around the prostate, so he wants to do radiation to erradicate it....we are continuting to pray for his healing, strentgh, and encouragement....the Lord is the maker of miracles and we know that he is in ultimate control of everything...

To all of you who have been praying for them...thank you so much..it means a lot to know that you have been praying for them and it is evident in their healing and attitudes that the presence of the Lord is there and that people are praying for them....

Anyways, I guess I don't have much else to say at the moment....I pray that the Lord's presence is very real and very close to each of you and that you will experience the joy of His peace and strength as you go about your week...take care and God bless!!!

Yeah, so it's been a long time since I've written. Almost a month in fact....I guess it's been crazy-busy around here lately....I worked full-time until the 10th of Jan. when I had to go back to school....

School has been going well but it's keeping me almost overwhelmingly busy...lots of homework and tests of course :) ....and our IV Module on top of it...which, by the way, means I am now able to stick an IV needle/catheter into your veins...so does anyone want to volunteer?.....I promise it won't hurt

I am actually playing vball on a league team in Bismarck now...a girl I know who graduated a few years ahead of me in HS asked me to play with her team..and although I probably shouldn't and I should study instead, I just decided that I needed to get out once in a while and not only get some good exercise, but play some competitive vball to relieve stress and have some fun and the same time. My first game was this Wed. and it was really awesome...I had a blast and it felt so good to be back out on the court playing...probably the only thing I miss about HS is the sports...I miss playing bball and vball with a team...so I guess this is an awesome thing...I'm just praying that God will help me to continue to manage my time wisely. Anyways....

Work is good...it's been fairly quiet tonight..oh man I shouldn't have said that...it's a jinx lol lol...now they're all gonna go wild lol lol...oh well..haha

Not much else is going on....if you get a chance stop by sometime and I'll show you our Pyro and Sparky hats, courtesy of the Mercer Rural Fire Protection District lol....our director of student services, Mary, thought they were so great she took a picture of us in them and they are making sure to put that picture in the Medcenter Yearbook lol.....what can we say??? We have certainly left our mark in history at MOCN hahaha...oh yeah and I'll have to show you guys our pics of us by the burned garbage can and in the ER with our oxygen masks on...they're pretty funny lol....

Well, anyways, I don't really have much else to say now...I pray that you are finding peace and joy in our Lord Jesus Christ as you begin the journey through 2005.....praying for you all!!! God bless...

Ok, so I know, it's been over a month since I've written, but it has been so crazy-busy around here I don't even know how to describe it...let me give you a few details to "enlighten" your "burning" desire to know....

School school and more school....tests and studying, papers and more....seems my whole life was consumed by it for the last month....but of course, you know me, I could never lead a normal, boring lifestyle like normal people....

So on December 6th, 2004 at 7:30 pm central daylight time, I proceeded to put out a fire. In the dorms. In the kitchen. In the garbage can. And no, I didn't start it!! Let me explain...(unfortunately, I can't tell you all in person...it's a much more fun to listen to in person, but this will have to do for now I guess lol lol ll...)

You see, Sarah and I were down frying hamburgers and potatoes for supper. Sarah decided to make some toast with it so she put some bread in the toaster. Well a couple minutes later, I'm standing over stirring my potatoes, and I smell smoke, and I look over and there is smoke coming out of the toaster. So I holler" Sarah you're toast is burning!!" and dash over to pop up the toast. And no, this is not where the fire started. lol...let me continue with the saga... ;)

There is no ventilation or openable windows in the kitchen, so I went to open the doors and turn on the fans to air things out. In the meantime, Sarah put the burned toast in the garbage can and was dishing up supper. But, as I'm opening up doors, more and more smoke is coming out the kitchen, and I'm like, "what the heck is going on - burned toast shouldn't make that much smoke!" So I turn towards the kitchen I see that a bunch of white smoke is coming out....and as I get closer, I realize there is flames shooting out of the garbage can. So I yell "Sarah there's a fire in the garbage can!!!!" and run in the kitchen...she sees it and yells "it's too big!!! I'm calling 911!!" So as she runs to call 911, I grab the fire extinguisher, and by the grace of God get it to work and put the fire out. Thank heavens because at this point the smoke was so thick I could hardly see the garbage can 1 foot in front of me and you couldn't see into the lounge/kitchen area at all. After spraying a few extra moments to ensure it was out, I ran back out of the kitchen and met Sarah, who had the fire dept. on it's way. We ran and told everyone that they were coming and the fire was out, cuz we didn't want anyone to freak out or anything. So then, this cop shows up first, and goes "Where's the fire???" and we tell him "It was in the kitchen, but it's out now." So what does he do??? He goes barreling into the smoke about 2 feet and comes back out coughing and choking and saying "I can breathe there's too much smoke!!" and we're all thinking "No kiddin' Sherlock - how long'd it take ya to figure that one out????"

Well then the fire dept. shows up and this one guy (he must be kind of an idiot because all the other fire fighters kept yelling at him and telling him he was in there way) keeps saying very mockingly "Hey girls, there's a smoke free environment sign in here...you're supposed to keep it a smoke free environment.....it's no smoking in here what were you thinking???" blah blah on and on, and of course, we're already upset over the whole thing, but he's making it worse and boy is he lucky I can control that short red-headed temper of mine because I was ready to let him have it he made me so mad. Well, anyway, like I said before the fire was out, so all they did was open things up and bring in this huge fan to air things out - there is no ventilation in there like I said so it was hard to clear out the smoke. And of course, I held it togther really well until I called my dad to tell him what happened and the minute I heard his voice, I started bawling. lol.....it was more just relief than anything, but for some reason, in certain stressful situations, I do just fine until it's all over and done with for a while, and then I bawl....lol lol I lol...I just don't get it...haha...anyways.........

To make a long story short, after a little investigating it seems that someone must have used some chemicals to clean and used paper towels to wipe it up...then threw them into the garbage can where they were combusting. It was a flash fire kinda deal....the toast was just the last initiator. In fact, the toast was still completely intact in the garbage can and there was only about a 2-3 inch strip burned down the side of the can....nothing else...the rest of the can and the plastic bag inside the can were completely intact. It looks like the fire followed a liquid trickle down the inside of the can...and we just got it out in time before it spread. They're also thinking that it was just a matter of time before it exploded anyway, and it just happened to be luck that we were there when it happened...because if it would've happened during the night we'd have all been trapped upstairs in our rooms.

Sarah and I believe that God truly intervened though, because although it was a crappy situation for us, it totally could have been worse if it wouldn've happened while the kitchen was unattended or while someone else who wouldn't have known what to do would have been in there. I believe it's an excellent example of how God can turn bad situations into better ones. It's funny cuz now all our faculty members and everyone keep saying they're glad we were in there...because if it would have been anyone else the place would've burned...they tell us we're good in Emergency situations apparently lol...we just keep telling them that we praise God for being in control and using both of us to respond to the fire...and for keeping everyone safe. We did go to the ER at St. A's for smoke inhalation (I inhaled quite a bit becasue I was right in the middle of it when I used the extinguisher....and I'm pretty sure I got some of the extinguisher chemical too....just from the metallicy taste in my mouth afterwards and the fact that my bronchioles hurt and were pretty tight. They gave me a breathing treatment and gave both of us 15L high flow oxygen for about 45 minutes after drawing our CO2 levels...lucky for us, neither of us smoke, which really decreased the amt. of CO2 that bonded to our hemoglobin. So again, God was totally with us and took care of everyone...we have many reasons to praise Him this Christmas.

Well, after that long saga of a week(as I said, the fire story is much better to listen to in person because I can describe it better and more vividly lol), I've been doing nothing but studying my brain out for finals. We took one final each day this week.....it was craziness, and let me tell ya....my brain is officially off duty and not functioning for the next month. I'm looking foward to getting some time to just be home, and do some outdoorsy stuff...and being able to go to work without having to drag piles of homework with that I never get done anyway because it's nuts (hehehehe). I'm loving the Christmas season, althought I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas.....Jack Frost seems to only be bringing us freezing cold temperatures...not white stuff to cover the ground.. I know I'm weird, but I sure hope it snows before Christmas...it's just not quite the same thing w/o a beautiful snow cover glistening on Christmas morn.

We have our Christmas program at church on Dec. 24th at 7 pm - please come if you're in the area!!! The church has awesome goodie bags to give away afterwards and there's always one for each person there!! Come share the joy of Christ's birth with us!!! We'd love to have you..

Anyways, this is my life in a nutshell (a big nutshell anyway lol - chipmunk sized!) May the Lord bless you all this Christmas and may you recognize His presence. Take care and I hope to hear from all of you soon.....

So yes, about the rest of my life lol...not that it's that interesting.........Barb and I are plotting something............but I can't say what because Sarah is trying to find out and if she reads this it won't be a secret plot anymore....so I'll tell you what we are plotting after it's over with lol.....

Thanksgiving is coming early for me...we're celebrating this Sat. with my mom's side of the family at my grandma and grandpa's house...I'm so excited!!! Turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, dressing, pie, salad..........mmm sounds so good I can't wait!!!

I guess one thing that's kinda interesting is that I'm thinking about going to Guatemala at the end of May.....only for like a week or so but it should be an awesome expereince...one of my instructors wants to take a group of nursing students down (in coop. w/ the God's Child Project) and do nursing work down there...vaccines, hospital care, nursing home cares etc. etc....I think that it would be a totally awesome way to not only practice my nursing skills, but an awesome way to serve God by helping others...especially there where pretty much everyone is less fortunate than myself...I don't know...I think that that's such an awesome way to serve....so we'll see if God wills it or not...I've gotta pray about it for a while and we'll see what He has in store for me :)

Not much else is going on...I have to go get Gracia in the morning and take her to work.....so I have to get up kinda early but I can go in my pj's so then I'm coming back and going to bed for a little while until my post clinical at 11....I had clinical all day today so tomorrow I have the day off....kinda nice I guess......some time to work on homework and such...and sleep a little!!! (hehehe...what can I say, I get so little sleep lately that any chance I get to sleep I take advantage of lol)

Oh yeah and I almost forgot - I think on Thursday I'm going to go out to UTTC w/ Campus Crusade to help with this supper thingy and a showing of the Passion of the Christ.....I am praying that it will go well and that students hearts will be opened to God's truth....and even that some of them will accept Christ....so please pray that the Lord's presence will be upon the place on Thursday eve....

Anyways, there isn't much else to say.....I hope all is well and that the Lord is blessing you much!!! Take care.....

Quote for the week: "A friend is one who knows you and loves you just the same." - Elbert Hubbard

God bless and have a great week!!!

Sunday, November 07, 2004

Hey everyone....

It's been a crazy few weeks here at MOCN.....if you don't know already, I can give shots now, so if anyone would like to volunteer an arm for me to practice on please let me know ASAP!!! ;)

Work has been wild but good...one of our residents seems to think myself and another aide are his daughters so he's always lecturing us about getting home on time (one night we didn't get home until midnight, can you believe us??? lol) or is asking us questions like "Well, is he good lookin'???" lol... we just play along and let him think he's our dad....one night he even told us "Hey, be nice to your old dad!" Little moments like these are what make my job worth while... ;)

I'm looking forward to Thanksgiving break...it's gonna be really busy until then but it'll be worth it when I can actually relax a little on Thanksgiving (aka don't have to study 24/7)....mostly though I'm looking forward to actually spending some time with my family....I know this sounds like an old lady thing but honestly the older I get the more I appreciate every second I have with each of them.....I am so blessed to have such an awesome, supportive, loving family...I didn't realize how many people out there don't have this wonderful gift....makes me appreciate mine all the more.

This past week was especially a good one because of the election..I had spent all day in Surgery and didn't know anything that was going on, so when I got back to the dorms I headed straight for the TV to check things out.....well of course, I'm pretty into things after only a few minutes of watching so when they go to commercial I decide I need to sprint up the stairway so I can grab some stuff from my room and be back in time for when the news people came back on.....so I'm running up the stairway and my foot slips and I smash my knee on the stairway and then slip down another stair and smash my knee again at which point I'm trying to grasp the wall and prevent myself from crashing all the way back down to the bottom of the stairway...a few steps later I stop my downhill tumble and limp my way to the top of the stairway and into my room (as fast as I can of course), grab my stuff, and hobble all the way back down (laughing hysterically at my stupidity...I think I'm the only person around who can trip UP the stairway hehehehehe lol ) ...just in time to see the news people come back on..........and see that Bush was ahead!!!

So to make a long story short, I stayed up till 2 am watchin' the election and the next day celebrated when they finally announced that yes, he had taken Ohio and had been re-elected!!! Praise God for his re-election!!!

Well, I guess that's all for now......life is good and God just keeps on blessing me more each day as I get to know him even more....Hope all is well with you and that you're life is as interesting as mine has been lately... ;) Take care...Praying for you all!!

In His Joy,
