| San Diego, Matt & Drake, and the Van Buren Last Saturday, I went down to the Chargers stadium in San Diego for a shoot with Webrides. It was a great show, since it was all European cars and there were over 800 of them there. Mostly German: VW, Porsche, Audi and BMW. Anyway, It was a nice day. It was hotter than heck - maybe 20 degrees hotter than it was in Venice.. and I got sunburn. My ears were even peeling a little bit a few days ago. Anyway, it was a good shoot, and I made bank because it took all day, and we had a lot of travel time to put on the clock.
So Sunday morning rolls around, and I'm getting ready for church when Parker calls and says he has some extra tix to the Chargers/Seahawks preseason game in San Diego. I had never been to an NFL game, so I was all about it. So I headed BACK down to Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego for a great football game. Good times. Josh and I went, but Greg hung back in town.
The other big event last weekend was the departure of Matt and Drake, two buddies from BG who were out here joining me doing internships. They were too good to stay out here for Fall Semester, but it was great to have them around while it lasted. We had some great times going out on the town - mostly wandering around Westwood ot the UCLA hangouts. And, of course, they came to the Vegas for my birthday. It was a rediculous great time. I wish them luck this next semester back at BG and look forward to kickin it again when I get back to town.
The newest big addition to lives here is on my face: it's the Van Buren. It was originally part of a Webrides revolution to stick it to the man and grow crazy facial hair. It started with Cuatz's awful moustache. So everyone decided to grow something stupid on our faces. I was the only one who did anything really stupid. Josh grew a stache like Cuatz's, but it actually looked kind of normal on him. And he got rid of it before too long. Anyway, I am playing a cop in a music video this weekend, so the guys wanted me to keep it for the shoot. So now I have had this rediculous thing for three whole weeks. I get made-fun-of daily: both at Max-Q and at Webrides. Cant wait to shave this bad boy.

| Scores, Photo Shoots, and EARTHQUAKESLast week, the company that was renting space from Max-Q moved out. That opened up all sorts of office space we didn't have before. So the first thing I did the Monday after they moved was reassess my territory. I found a nice big office that was located pretty central to our space, and staked my claim. It has a dartboard, a big TV, and my desk and computer, and lots of extra room. I play with the dartboard in between renders when I'm editing, and we also use it to make company decisions (i.e. if the dart lands on a green space we have Chinese for lunch.) Anyway, I have been doing some work recently searching for music cues for projects. I listen to pieces from music libraries we have (I would guess we have tens or hundreds of thousands of cues in our libraries) and I call music providers and give them clues so they can look for music also on our behalf. For example, I might call and tell a salesperson that I am looking for an orchestral cue with some mystery, but a big sound with a lot of dynamic changes and a hint of creepy. Or add mystery, but stay away from creepy and make more of a triumphant mystery sound, but not old-worldish. Anyway, we were editing a theatrical trailer the other day, and had a music cue that didn't end right, and we needed a chord to transition the piece into the next musical section. Gene went and got his Martin, and I went into the sound booth and figured out the last strum on the guitar for the piece. So I have a one-chord cameo in a theatrical trailer now. Yesterday, we went to a photo shoot for a movie poster we are making for a war film. We got to play with guns (M4's) grenades, and cameras all day. The photographer was awesome, and the weapons expert that was there claims to have taught Tom Cruise how to handle a weapon and look like a secret agent. He says he taught him to shoot his first live round ever. I also got a cameo in the poster: I rolled up in a sheet and laid on the ground to pose as a dead body for background elements in the poster design. And the photographer's assistant was cute. But she had a boyfriend. Foiled again. And the last order of business: the earthquake. So last night, about one in the morning, I am talking to greg (he sleeps on the bottom bunk. we are like little kids.) anyway, the bed starts shaking. I assume that Greg is just being an idiot and kicking the wall or something. I am about to tell him to knock it off, when it stops. We later realize that it wasnt each other being stupid, but the whole ground was shaking. It was a 4.6 or something on the richter, and the first time any of the three of us have actually felt an earthquake.

| Jenny Mccarthy visitsso after i returned from colorado (i was teaching sports industry pros about how to shoot an interview for my parent company) i was informed that we had someone coming in to do voice over in our sound booth. now our sound booth isnt anything professional but its pretty nice for what it is. anyways ... no one told me who was coming in until i was contacted by a girl named chelsea, who said that jenny mccarthy and her daughter would be coming in later to do some voice over. i was for sure that it was not the real jenny mccarthy and just some model that wanted to become famous by ripping off her name. i was then called by my boss who informed me that chelsea was the stedicam girl we had used on a shoot and that indeed the REAL jenny mccarthy was coming in with her daughter to use our sound booth. by this point i was beyond star struck and just rolled with it. a few hours rolled around and there walking through our door at work was a beautiful blonde that was jenny mccarthy. she was pretty nice and was doing this voice over work with her daughter for a video to help autistic children learn how to speak and recognize what they were saying as it related to physical actions. so this has been my favorite celeb run in so far ... unless next week i get to make out with keira knightly ... not gonna hold my breath though .... another exciting thing happened this weekend but greg wants to post about it so i shall let him tell the story. word on the street is that he is doing some nice drawings for illustrations .... peace and love everyone. -josh
for anyone who doesnt know who jenny mccarthy is ....

| Yellow Harvest, Guild Screening, John Williams, and RooneyI haven't posted in a while, and have a bit to catch up on. First, I got to see a super secret film at work codenamed Yellow Harvest. It is a big summer movie coming out in the not-so-distant future, but I can't say anything else, or the studio will hunt me down and and kill me. So don't ask. Last Wednesday, I got an invite from my boss to attend a screening he was invited to at the Director's Guild. They were showing Transformers, and it was supposed to be for guild members, but I took Gene's invitation, invited Josh along, and slid right in. It was an amazing theater, beautiful building, and great crowd. There were no previews before the screening, and everyone in the house stayed through the very end credits. Best of all, it was free. good stuff. Friday, Matt invited Greg, Josh and I to use some free tickets to see John Williams conduct the LA Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl. The seats were close to the stage and close to the center, and we got to see JW conduct Star Wars, Indiana Jones, ET, Superman, and some other newer scores. The weather was perfect for the show, and there weren't screaming teenage girls like at John Mayer/Ben Folds. He came out and gave us a total of 4 encore pieces, which was pretty rad too.
This eve, Greg, Josh, and I went to Rooney's CD release party/concert at the Roxy on the Sunset Strip. The opening band was called "hello stranger." They had a tight sound and a good vibe. kind of groove/rock with a chick singer. Then Jason Schwartzman (Actor, I heart Huckabees, Shopgirl.; also the drummer from Phantom Planet) Introduced Rooney by playing a few songs of his own and entertaining / emceeing. Rooney was good, and thier new songs sounded pretty solid. Apparently, the lead singer of Rooney is Jason Schwartzman's brother, and they are Nicholas Cage's couzins. So that's where he came from. Anyway, It's been an eventful week. I'm going to bed. | | |
