  • i finished 2 books within the last 2 weeks. i guess i have been a little bored! the first book is "the time traveler's wife." it's a sweet book about love, fate, and devotion. that's all about it, i think.

after finishing the book, i thought about who would be perfect to play claire and henry. i would cast amy smart, isla fisher, or rachel mcadams. i was having a harder time picturing henry because he needed to be youthful, versatile, and athletic. i ended up picking jake gyllenhaal.

apparently hollywood had already made the movie with rachel mcadams as claire and eric bana as henry. eric bana??? i think it's the same mistake as casting tom hanks as robert langdon.

i really love the namesake in writing and movie form, so i decided to pick up her third novel that consists of short stories.

i don't love it as much as the namesake because some of the stories feel incomplete. most of the characters deal with parent/cultural issues, are well-educated, and are involved sexually or romantically with caucasians. although these are fascinating topics to explore, reading six different variations within a book can be quite a drag.

the best book i've read this year is still "the gift of rain."

  • I'm not a fan of poetry in general, but I found one I really like.
It is called Love After Love:

    The time will come
    when, with elation
    you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror
and each will smile at the other's welcome,

    and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you

all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,

    the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
    Sit. Feast on your life.

  • baby steps

i was working on a project when my boss approached me. she said, "vic, do you know that you will be managing the two designers who will join us on july 1st?" i said no but i began to smile.

she continued saying, "well, i'd like to manage both of them along with another girl who will be assisting them. since you were the one who interviewed them, i think they should report to you." i said of course with a big smile.

my boss asked me to conduct the interviews because she knew that i understood the needs of our main clients. even though i secretly wanted to be the creative director, i thought that these new people would report to her.

after sharing my dreams out loud with the world this weekend, this amazing news arrived first thing monday morning. i was dying to tell someone, so i called felix just to share this news.

aside from being able to establish a direction of this new department, i also get to learn a lot from these designers. i got the perfect bargain!

    how to kill a mockingbird

there was an hour to kill before dinner on saturday, so i went to borders and decided to pick up this amazing book. i finished it in two days because it was quite mesmerizing.

i am not a little white girl from the south (some could argue about it), but her train of thoughts flows so naturally and vividly to me. if i can describe a book as visually amazing, then it definitely is. the old tired town, the adolescent and moody big brother, the haunted house, the strict black servant, the cool dad, the nosy neighbors, the neighbor who makes the best pies, and the crazy pseudo boyfriend are all within my reach.

aside from the wonderful story telling, there is another element of the book that i fall in love with: atticus. in a very general sense, atticus is what a man should be: gentle, kind, forgiving, confident, smart, and humble.

in a book about racism and growing up in the south, i found the tenet of the buddhist teaching. i simply love it.
