LACEY HODGES FINDS A NEW HOME TO LIVE WITH EMMA IN MISSOURI

Sherri lost Bodhi on the fourth of July when some children let him out the gate and he has never been found. Although he can never be replaced, Lacey will help ease the loneliness and have her own place as Emma's little sister. She is a Bi-blue which means she is almost all blue-grey and has brown eyes.

SAMI JO STEPHENS POSES IN MISSOURI

Sami Jo's folks are Jim and Gene Stephens, who live in Springfield, Missouri. She is very tiny, but has a big heart and spirit. Jim and I were both seniors in the same class in high school in Mtn. Grove, home of the Panthers in 1951. Below is Sami Jo at playtime.

The new Batman movie has people flocking to the theaters and going online to reserve tickets.

FOUR GENERATIONS VISIT THE MUSEUM

Below are left to right: Verna Flippin, Oklahoma, Rebecca Smith, Mississippi, Alexis Smith, Ms., Judy Fenhaus, Texas. They were having as much fun as four kids at a fair. Somehow I think they would have enjoyed the day no matter what they were doing or where they were, as long as they were together. And that's the way families should be, I think.

PAST AND PRESENT

Newspaper Strike, New York City, just before World World II Tidbit from Joe: During the strike, no one could read the Sunday comics (then called the "funny papers" by most). The mayor of New York actually read them over the radio so that people, whether young or old would not miss out on the "funnies". Can you imagine that happening today?

NORMAN, OKLAHOMA IS NO. SIX

Money Magazine has rated Norman as being No. 6 in the nation for a good city in which to live. They say a starter home is $135,000. In my opinion, that's a starter home for people with a pretty good income. Ours, I think is worth about $100,000 with the solar tubes and fishpond being good seller points. Also, our son in law, Mike, installed top grade heat and air.

The way it use to be

When I was born, Norman's population was 10,000. When I was about six, I walked to Jefferson Elementary along a sidewalk/path to Main from East of Central State Hospital. Our house on Reed Street is gone. The next houses are still there, little white frame ones. At Christmas time, some of them are really elaborately decorated. Now they are getting ready to build a four lane street along the S. side of the hospital so people can get to Walmart easily, I suppose. But there's something about these little houses that intrigues me, the pretty flowers that are planted, yard decorations and so on. It's pleasant to drive through these neighborhoods as compared to the big brick homes. I guess it's nostalia and knowing they existed through the era of ice boxes, milkmen and big radios with One Man's Family, Green Hornet, Funny papers on Sunday brought to life on the radio.

GINGER SPENDS A WEEK WITH THE STEPHENSONS BELOW NAPPING WITH DAVID. And left is Mitzi with the five little ones who live there, posing like little pros, as per usual. Smokey looks kind of warm with that thick fur for the summer, even though it is trimmed somewhat short. Isn't that little white pom she has in her right arm cute? (named "Tigger") A rescue puppy, he was very expensive to get well, but I think he was worth it. The pups at right top to bottom: Mandolyn, Oreo and Shadow.

SEA OTTERS SWIM AT JENKS, OKLAHOMA AQUARIUM. UNFORTUNATELY, IT WAS TOO DARK FOR A GOOD PHOTO. Two spectaors watch the camerman watch the otters.

Interesting, these creatures who live in the sea.

CELEBRATING AUSTRALIA and a great big thank you to Sam Maunaughtin who lives in Victoria, Australia. After an agonizing five days of trying to get our credit card machine programed and operating, about $70 in cell phone charges and at least 2 days of worktime lost for each of us, Sam solved our problem. A large part of the thank you goes to Debbie, who found him for us on the internet. It took Sam about 10 minutes to get it working. We had talked with about 10 people from the process people who got us nowhere. Sam works for Hypercom, producer of our machine. And the third thank you goes to Joe, who discovered the big problem: a missing digit on a phone number. It was a missing six. All that time and trouble over a missing six. I told Sam I would send him a rose rock and he said, well, there is a problem. I live in Australia. I told him it wasn't a problem and I got his address to send it Tuesday.

You can see the below scene for about $2500 in Australia. Beautiful, isn't it?

The above photo of Joe's aunt, Ruth Timberlake is one of my favorites, taken in 1918. Her daughter, Gloria lives in a lovely home in Florida.

ALLIGATOR ATTACK IN JENKS, OKLAHOMA

Unsuccessful, she hits him with her purse, finally saving the victim's life. Voted hero of the day, she was awarded a big Mac on the way home.

TAFFY SPROULE POSES FOR A CONTEST A Florida resident, she enjoys a cool a roo. It is a raised mesh bed which keeps her cooler and mildew and mold free, important in Florida. I saw one advertised on the internet for $17 which certainly is reasonable for a dogbed, especially one that special.

When she gets bored with that, she also swims in the pool in the back yard. What a life!

HAWAIIAN KITCHEN CABINETS ARE UNIQUE. When I lived in Hawaii in 1955, it was quite different than anywhere i had been.

Living in Air Force housing, I was horrified to see little green lizards walking around on the kitchen cabinet doors. Locals told me to let them alone. They were "house geckos" and were very good at eating any kind of bug. It was hard to get use to, since I neither liked bugs or lizards, but we learned to live with them, sharing the space in our kitchen. That's not my hand below.

Another strange thing was I could be sitting on my couch, and a face would appear at the screened top of the back door. I'm not sure if he was Hawaiian or Japanese. Anyway, he would look in and yell at me and ask me if I wanted any of his baked goods. What I did find to be fun was going barefoot and wearing long dresses called muumuus to the store a few blocks away. It was much more casual then than it is now and less expensive. A trolley of some sort was available to ride to downtown area. Maybe it's best I can't go back, because I think it would destroy my pleasant memories of how it was then. (except for the geckos) My muumuu was similar to the one below.

TIGER MOUNTAIN FUN Cindy and her favorite pastime Summer is a break from teaching elementary school in Bridgecreek, southwest of Oklahoma City.

BIRTHDAY BASH PHOTOS AND DREW'S NEW PICKUP It isn't every day you get a new pickup your senior year of high school, so we all were treated to a demonstration of Onstar and the telephone inside the truck. Teddie, the rescue cocker spaniel who thinks she's human, watches the camera in the foreground.

CHRISTIAN PRICE AT NEWS OK.COM VISITED US. Here he enterviews Joe in the front room and was gracious enough to permit us to do a photo ourselves. His charm entertained us and kept us chuckling all the way through the interview.

Did you know there is a fun place at Tiger Mountain, near Henryetta, Oklahoma to enjoy nature? For you out of state people, this is Eastern Oklahoma. There is a pretty lake and beautiful scenery. It's called Tiger Mountain Resort. Here are some pictures Priscilla took when she and Lauren and Cindy went there last weekend. Nature trail through the woods:

Everybody is talking about oil these days. Below is an old standard rig in the 1920's.

UTAH COUPLE HIKE IN THE MOUNTAINS

Actually they just got back. How would you like to live in a place like that, surrounded by beautiful places to hike? I would. This is grandson Mike and girl friend Jamie. Mike got his computer degree at O. U. He lived with us for five years and helped keep us from turning senile. Now we're on our own. He had the formidable chore of teaching us to use computers. Jamie carries mail to millionnaires, including movie actors. An afternoon with them is guaranteed to be a lot of fun. Unfortunately we live a long way from Utah. Scroll on down to pictures of Little Cottonwood Canyon, one of the places they go.

And below we are back to Oklahoma. These are two wildflowers near where we get our rose rocks. They are about 2 inches across. Checking an Okla. Wildflower book by Doyle McCoy, we determined them to be Prairie Verbena. It blooms April - September. There were only the two plants in the area. The photo is about life size and pretty showy for wildflowers.

TOM RADER AND HIS NEW TOY

Tom brought his 1951 MG he ordered from Hawaii and had shipped to Oklahoma. He poses with it below. This is a kid with a new old toy. How does 42 miles per gallon sound? Tom lives N. E. of Noble and has his own full sized windmill. He is also an avid rock collector with many large beautiful rock slices on display. Crystal loves to see him and recognizes his voice , so she comes running. He also feeds her biscuits.

Joe feeds the Koi fish. Crystal accompanies him to the pond. If she hears him open the back door, she jumps up and runs to go with him.

"Oh boy, oh boy, great snacks!"

OKLAHOMA STATE ROCK

Barite Rose Rock

This near perfect specimen was pulled out of an area of extremely hard sandstone and required many hard rains to remove it S. E. of Noble. It was taken from a very small area.

OKLAHOMA STATE CRYSTAL

Hourglass selenite

This is the only place in the world that selenite crystals form with hourglass design. Found in the northwest part of the state, the park was shutdown for collecting specimens when a child dug into some material that caused a burning sensation. It was determined that the area was formerly used for military purposes and is still closed down this year. Normally it is open April through October and it is a disappointment for many that it is not accessible.

ROSE ROCK COUNTRY VISITED IN NOVEMBER

Here is an area we had not visited in a year. It is pretty wild country out there. The first photo gives you an impression of what it is like. See the rose rocks at the bottom of the photo.

ROSE ROCKS DUG 11/2007

This is a small sampling I grabbed out of a bucket and power washed before leaving the shop Monday. It looks really promising. They are from two to two and half inches across.

Joe power washed some rose rocks we brought in last weekend and this one, we thought was quite interesting. We have a collection of little rose rock hearts in the museum to add this one to. It is completely flat on the back.

The rose below is another treasure the rain provided.

The above rose rock and dogwood tree was made for the City of Noble about 1985 and is on display at the City Hall. Noble is the official Rose Rock Capital of Oklahoma. Joe did most of the structure and rose rock work while I did the porcelain enameling of the dogwood blossoms. Debbie cut out each copper leaf by hand, wearing garden gloves. Later we had a punch and die made so the leaves could be punched out.

Below is a really large rose rock cluster located south east of Noble. The boys are grandchildren of the owner.

The largest known rose rock cluster completely removed out of the ground is pictured above. It is approx. 10 ft. long, owned by Steve Meints, Muskogee area. You can get an idea of the size if you notice the tires which are underneath it. It originated S. E. of Noble, Ok. Another large one, about five feet long is located at Love's corporate headquarters in Oklahoma City. It also came from S. E. of Noble.

The photo above shows how the little rose rocks look as they come out of the sand. Below is a near perfect rose. It came from an area which is just about depleted. They were in an embankment which was so hard it took many hard rains to reveal them.
