in case we weren't already sure that the music industry is a huge, cruel joke...

i want to tell you a little story.

it starts with alicia keys. alicia keys is one of those elusive talented people who managed to somehow secure a major record deal and find some success with her talent BEFORE she started to suck. so i'm always interested to hear what she'll come out with next because i'm always SURE that someone will allow her to put out music that's halfway decent again.

fast forward.

i know i am typically judgmental of people's voices. in fact, i am openly judgmental. (and unapologetic about it. so... i hope we can still be friends.) but jonathan is usually quite kind and open minded. in fact, he likes all kinds of crap that i won't even listen to. but the first time we heard her recent single, "No One," we wanted to change the station.... but we couldn't. because we were frozen in horror. it's terrible. her voice is scratchy and out of tune. it sounds like she was sick and miserable an wanted to stop singing, but someone in the studio forced her to keep going until the single was pushed out. (now would be the time to go listen to it if you haven't already.) even jonathan couldn't stop cringing at the sound of it.

fast forward.

punch line: alicia keys just won a grammy for female R&B performance of the year for the song "No One."

IF YOU LIVE IN HOUSTON....

... you need to step outside RIGHT NOW. i don't care what you're doing. just back up, turn around, and go outside.

this is the definition of a perfect day.

and if you're looking for some free entertainment, my guitar and i will be out on the balcony giving that bulldozer a run for its money.

here's hoping the rest of the weekend is as perfect as today,
maryanna

amusement

a couple weeks ago i was playing a pat benatar song on my guitar and kind of shakin it up a little with some slapping and such. i played it for jonathan and he said "wow honey, i really like that one. i think it's one of my favorite songs you've ever written!"

just now i was playing "konstantine" (by something corporate) on the keyboard in the living room and he says, excitedly, "is this a new song?!"

i am amused.

and when i am amused, i like to share.

2007

i realize that no one uses xanga anymore, but it is the end of the year and i need to say something.

this year started out horribly.

11 and a half months later, i'm about the happiest i have maybe ever been.

that's God.

here are a few highlights of the year:
-- we bought a freaking house
-- maegan moved in our downstairs room and has spent many hours rocking our faces off with her awesomeness
-- i wrote 9 songs. it doesn't sound like a lot for a year, but when you consider that 6 of those were within 7 weeks of each other, it seems a bit more impressive.
-- i spent four days in new york city at christmas time.
-- i was able to use the phrase "you made me feel like i actually had something to offer the world again" to at least two people (who were not my husband) and actually mean it. (that one is HUGE.)
-- i discovered the joys of making friends over the internet. seriously people. it's fun. you should try it.
-- i went to DC and philadelphia and got to spend some time with my italian family
-- i got to know my adorable niece a little better and realize how awesome she is
-- ditto for the mother of said niece
-- i have seen (in concert) and met several musicians that i kind of feel are responsible for me getting back into writing
-- i actually got paid to photograph a wedding
-- my job at the VA went from being open-ended/unstable to being permanent
-- i started playing shows for the first time in my life
-- i met with someone who is actually excited (gasp) to work with me to record a real live, professional ep

i guess that's just a little year in review for you.

i'm really thankful and i'm really blessed.

here's to 2008, and the blaring lack of sarcasm displayed in this post.

i am extremely bothered by the following:

Newscaster: "over one million people have been forced to evacuate their homes due to the wildfires in Southern California. the texans may no longer get to play in San Diego because of it."

the end. that was it. that was the whole blurb. you've got to be effing kidding me. people are freaking evacuating their homes, and they use it as an opportunity to mention the effing texans.

i effing hate football.
