RELIEF: A Benefit for APIA Survivors of Hurricane Katrina

New Orleans: home of cajun cooking and true American jazz, the birthplace of Asian American history. 400 years ago, Filipino settlers established the first known Asian American community in the U.S. here. In recent weeks, the entire city has been ravaged by Hurricane Katrina, devastating floods, and thousands have lost homes and loved ones' lives.

Media coverage of Hurricane Katrina's destruction has consistently shown FEMA and the Red Cross helping to rebuild the lives of those affected by Hurricane Katrina. But firsthand accounts of survivors and volunteers in the hurricane-hit region have contrasted these accounts to the extreme. Thousands of displaced immigrants and undocumented residents, including Vietnamese and other poor communities of color in the South, have been neglected and denied aid from the U.S. government's attempts to provide relief to the area, due to language barriers and lack of documentation.

It is up to us, the APA community, to help out our brothers and sisters in need, because as writer K.W. Lee has said, " We are our first and last line of defense." Come out to support these communities in need down South! 100% of proceeds go to There Are No Words, an Asian American-run nonprofit organization helping the Vietnamese communities of New Orleans to recover from the hurricane and floods.

Join three different cities; New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles; help raise funds for Asian Pacific Islander - Americans left homeless after Hurricane Katrina.

before i headed out last nite...i watched the new martha show that my roomie tivo'd. i think america loves comeback stories. lord knows ms. m's time at camp cupcake wasn't anything we've witnessed in oz, but the fact that she's bounced back from really bad pr to relaunching her brand in a fresh way, is pretty hardcore. the most hardcore thing about the show, which was celebrating her mother's 91st b-day, was the fact that martha, in her typical sweet (yet conniving and evil tone) told her mother not to cry on national tv as she was surprising her with friends from the past. come on martha, it's your mom, she's 91 and if she wants to shed a tear or two, let the floodgates open.

and for a friend who stabs you in the back, i guess it's also a sign of true friendship when you can own up to your mistakes, take responsibility and learn from it. recently i've learned that.

i feel bad that i've hurt a friend, but i think it's frustrating when folks have problems with you and can't talk to you about it. i value the relationships that i developed in my time here in new york. and recently there have been people who have disappointed me immensely. what i value from friends is their honesty, because i think that it's a sign of respect. friends call each other out on their shit. and if you have something to say to me, say it...or don't say it at all. for folks who can't confront issues or don't have enough balls to talk about conflicts on a one on one basis, it's truly a sign of immaturity and lack of self-respect...if you value yourself, your principles and your opinions, you should have enough respect to voice them.

LA was a riot. kanye's show was amazing...the energy, the peeps and of course common's appearance was delicious. he's yummy.

i got an upgrade, so i was staying at the mondrian in a suite, which was pretty baller, although it was such a scene with all the hoochie mamas heading to sky bar there. got to party it up with drew for his bday and had a blast...after the kanye show, we had a fabulous dinner at shelter and then headed to hot dog where the scene was so east village i was gagging with happiness. got to see my bitches who always make LA a fun and adventurous visit. thnx to danny, shane k, ms. izzy, wyman, jener and hofd member chris lee.

caught pbs's pov series last nite and it featured the hobart shakespeareans, a documentary that captures a fifth grade class in inner city LA and their extraordinary journey with a wonderful teacher, rafe. watching these children, a majority sons and daughters of working class immigrants, recite hamlet and to feel and to cry and to understand and to think about what they can achieve was simply put, inspiring.

man, reading about all the news in new orleans is pretty intense. i've enjoyed reading the analyses on race and class and how the natural disaster has really held a mirror to reflect our society that's divided by haves and have nots. special props to kanye for speaking his mind on nbc's relief special. yes president bush doesn't care about black people.

on a lighter note, b-day party was a blast...got to see a lot of folks that i haven't seen in a hot minute. seeing a bunch of my SU peeps made me realize how freakin crazy we were back in college. thanks to all the bitches that made it out. i had an outrageous time. =)
