"Bevin" Brant Johnson, 13, who was struck by a car Monday as he and a friend crossed Western Street near the 34th Avenue intersection, died from his injuries about 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Northwest Texas Hospital. "When I left last night (Wednesday) he was doing about as well as he could considering the severity of his injuries," said family spokeswoman Lori Lambert-Williams. "At about midnight his condition started to deteriorate. And at about 10:30 this morning (Thursday) I guess he decided it was time to go."
The Johnson family is large with nine children, five of them boys. Bevin was the middle brother.
This year would have been his first year at Tascosa High School where he planned to play the drums in the THS band, said his father, Bernard Johnson.
The driver of the car, a 21-year-old woman, was not charged with any violations, said Cpl. Jerry Neufeld, Amarillo Police Department spokesman. Neufeld said the police report stated the young man was crossing the street against traffic when the accident occurred.
"We'll present it (to the grand jury) because of the rules of procedure when you have a fatality," Neufeld said. "They'll look at it, but we don't anticipate any charges being filed at this time. The driver had a green light and was not speeding at the time of the accident."
Lambert-Williams said Bevin's mother, Erika, said of her nine children, "Each one is unique and special. We were blessed to have him for 13 years."
Lambert-Williams described Bevin as a wonderful young man who was a "joy to be around. He was fun and enthusiastic and a very good student. We already miss him."
Survivors include his parents, Bernard and Erika Johnson; four sisters, Ginny, Leila, Adi and Marti; and four brothers, Steve, Davin, Monte and Christen.
I feel so bad for everyone who was close to him Please pray for his family and friends Bevin will be missed! |
