We made it to Winston Salem one week ago. My dad and Kris Acker came along and were a great help. We're still unpacking boxes, and we're glad to be in our new home. Laura and I are both exhausted. The cat did quite well on the road and she seems to really love her new home - her behavior has greatly improved and she went back to using her liter box appropriately without any intervention.
Our place is located just west of Downtown, so we're rather central and just 3 blocks away from Baptist Hospital... which is the hospital I am not working at; but my hospital is also near by - about a 5-10 minute drive. The only downside to our location is the fact that Baptist hospital is the trauma center and receives LifeFlight helicopters which fly right over our apartments. It's not that big of a deal, and Gabriel sleeps right through it.
Our place is similar to the apartments on Heights that all us Vineyard residents dubbed "Melrose Place"- only we have central air/heat, a dishwasher, and a dining room and it's quite a bit cheaper. This morning I was walking Gabriel to the post office and there is a street about a block away called Melrose St. Just a little reminder of the place I called home for 10 years.
I'm really liking Winston Salem - it's small, hardly any bad traffic, beautiful, and the weather is great. I just have to leave my Houston driving habits behind. The other day I was returning the moving truck and hopped on highway - I was going less than 50 mph and no one was passing me. I couldn't believe it. Also, I found a good a pizza place and I'm eyeing another that I want to try in the future.
Also, there is only one Borders bookstore in town, and it's just a few blocks away from us.
I asked my father-in-law why just about every restaurant has Greek menu items despite a predominately southern menu and he said a lot of the restaurants are Greek-owned. So if you're in the mood for sweet tea and country fried steak and then change your mind, you can get a gyro instead.
