| It only takes a spark.
Welcome back to all the year threes who went to obs! You guys sure had hell loads of fun there yup Seeing all of them talking about obs, putting their obs watches on their msn nicknames and personal messages, really brings back lots of memories. I miss obs Battuta! Hm, but I'm glad they're all back! Whee.
Anyways E&C week's over! Yay. Racial harmony, workshop, workshop, workshop, and a talk plus viewing of the year fours' exhibits(As from monday to friday). Today's talk was really long, but it was inspirational for me. Okay I gotta share on my thoughts man, seriously. I was like almost bursting straight after the talk, hahaha.
Hm, it's actually a panel discussion, titled "It only takes a spark". The first speaker was Christine Laimer, the founder of Food from the Heart. She was a believer who started on a social enterprise bringing unused food to the needy, sharing her story on what inspired her to start and keep going at it. I feel that what she was doing was really wonderful, cutting down on food wastage and also helping the needy at the same time. This organisation mainly collects the leftover bread from bakeries, hotels and shops every night after the shop closes, and then distribute the bread to the beneficiaries. From this programme, not only will both the bakeries and charitable organisations benefit, this programme will be sustainable for the long term.
Next was one of the SMU students, Terence, from the Initiatives for Social Enterprise Club. He touched on their experience with Social Innovation, and also introduced two of their on-going projects to us. If I remember correctly, one was "Lil' Mustard Seed", and the other "Khearts". Most of the sharing was on social entrepreneurship, which is entrepreneurship to further a social cause, in simple terms. I guess that relates to volunteering in some aspects, that these projects which they start are long term projects. Plus, it takes far more planning to start this, then just volunteering for a day or two. Basically, it's about having ideas and putting them into actions, for a good cause.
Following up we had Robert Chew, who is a business professional now involved in social innovation with the Lien Centre for Social Innovation at SMU. He is also sitting on advisory committees in many different organisations, such as the SATA Council and the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce. Also, together with Cecilia Chua, who is the Senior Partner/Director at the Idea Factory. With a IT and computer background, Robert shared about how business thinking can be brought to the social sector. While Cecilia shared a story on their experience at Calcutta, India. That was an inspiring story, and I felt that it really reached out to me. Like, it brought out the burning desire in me to help others, just like how Mother Teresa did. It was a really really really, good story. Oh and, if anyone of you wants to hear the story, tell me alright? I'll be more than happy to share it with you!
"Sister, you have already given us the best thing, which is yourself. We will live with what we have, and make the best out of it." That was what one of the nuns told Cecilia when she was in Calcutta.
"All you need is to muster enough courage to follow your heart, and to do what you want to do." Quoted from Christine Laimer.
There's still many other points being brought up, just too many. But in all, I think what their main points are, are similiar to the spirit of volunteerism. It is important that we hold on to our beliefs tight, and go ahead and do something about it. Using our creativity and innovation, we can change things, be it to a few persons or for the society. We should start putting our words into actions, do it for a good cause.
Wow, okay. I think I've typed alot already hahaha. Somehow it feels like a reflection of some sort. Hee
Back to today! Hm, met Huibin and Jessica at vivo after school. Watched Dark Knight.
It was greaaaaaat. Go catch it if you haven't! It's surely worth your money I promise.
Met up with Gary, Tracy and Kenny for dinner. Had Pastamania, stayed there and chatted till eight plus. Gary is one big clown and I'm serious. Or maybe it's just me. I spent half the time there laughing my head off, hahahahahahahahaha. The three of us went home after that while the old birds went into toys r us to revive their long lost childhood memories.
Okay I'm done here. Gosh, it's midnight already. Goodnight!
