Cruise-In and See Some Pics

In place of a political rant, I'll give you the benefit (so to speak) of my perspective on Wooster's latest "cruise-in":

The Mini before it became well-known in America, looked like this:

Some sort of pretty motorcycle I've never heard of (sometimes we forget how beautiful a machine can be!):

And... a chrome alternator (the geometric lines of the belt are interesting too):

Finally, a sort of half-humorous intersection between cars and marriage (the paper in the front-side window is the original bill of sale):

The other side of that blue Belvedere says that both the car and the wife are "unrestored."

National Nanny, National Bank... Whatever

So... this (<-- gov't promising to 'shore up' Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac) means that, whenever I decide I have no intention of paying off my student loans, I can rely on the government to bail me out, right?

Actually, I figure the gov't's hand is forced, on this one, because congress after congress has given the market the impression that the feds would always be willing to bail out Fannie & related or similar federally-created institutions.

I keep thinking of what Yeats said:  "the center cannot hold" -- of course, something like an Apocalypse is supposed to follow from what Yeats envisioned, and I wouldn't go that far, but at some point the U.S. government is going to reach critical mass, in terms of spending.  I predict that it will occur about halfway through President Barack Obama's first term.

Bush can leave office any time now, and might as well.  Him and all of Congress.  We'd all be better off if they just took the rest of the year (or the rest of the decade, for that matter) as vacation time.

Enjoy these and other happy thoughts!

Gag Me with a Latte!!

Someone just said to me, "I just saw that Starbucks is closing 600 stores... it's a Sign of the Times.  They opened all those stores when things were booming, and now they're cutting back?  It's scary!"

It may be a Sign of the Times, but it is not a Sign of the End Times!  Good grief!  Rather, it is a Sign that the Market Is Doing What It Is Supposed to Do.  The market is contracting, and Starbucks is scaling back, because they have overextended their resources, and they planned poorly for any sudden increases in the cost of matériel and/or labor.  And you know, really, these cost increases have not been so "sudden" -- gas prices have jumped a lot in recent weeks, but they've been climbing (from, say, $2/gallon) for years, now.

The 'first thing to go' in a rough economy, is the Creature Comfort.  Let's face it, a $2.50 cup of coffee is a Creature Comfort, not a necessity.  Coffee, per se, might be a necessity(!), but you can always buy a pound of coffee and make a pot yourself.  You can, in fact, buy and make better-quality coffee at home, than you could ever hope to waste your money on in a Starbucks.

I know, I know, I'm speaking a heresy.  But it is a true heresy, if ever there were such a thing.

I realize that, in a mental health sort of way, we all need some luxury now and then, a little indulgence to help us relax, and help us pretend that everything is rosy and bright and perfect in the world.

But look at it this way:  it's a good sign.  It means that, as foolish and wasteful as we human beings are, still we are sensible enough to cut back on the unnecessaries for the sake of life and lights together.  We are still (somewhat) rational creatures.  Or rational self-interested creatures, as the economists say.

So, in the immortal words of Douglas Adams, DON'T PANIC!!

Well, maybe just a little.

Dedication Weekend

Well, the cousins got together for the second time, still too young quite to know what to do with one another:

But they both like to play with toys, and they both love their grandma (in the next photo they're both looking at her).

But we were really all together to see little Caleb dedicated to the Lord, with the commitment of all the congregation to pray and to support his parents (who would be my sister and brother-in-law).

(sorry, that last was a bit overexposed -- couldn't find a suitable diffuser for my flash! -- lost the coffee filter I've been using as a diffuser : P )

(Traditional) Phone Companies Stink

Today, I'm given another reason to be glad I switched to Vonage.  A new phone system was installed at our office, overnight, not by the dreaded Embarq, but by a different company.  Well, this other company doesn't know what it's doing, either.  They reprogrammed my line for the wrong phone number.  Now all calls intended for an entirely different office will be ringing on my phone.

Thanks. For. Nothing.
