| | Summer of Fun Update #2June 13 The Happening Yeah, uh, didn't see it. You have to work
pretty hard to get such bad reviews. When my brother, an M. Night fanboy to the max, said it wasn't watchable, I knew I
had made the right call. However, word on the street is if it had been an indie
director's first time at the rodeo, critics would be saying "Well done kiddo,
like to see where you go form here." Also, the Kung Fu Panda thing fell through
and got pushed down the list.
June 20 The Incredible Hulk Decided
to pass on Get Smart, possibly a rental later on. Hulk was pro'ly the way they
should have made it the first time. Although, I must say it lacked any depth in
terms of character development. While the action parts of it were more on par
with what you want to see the Hulk doing, I still think the story was much
stronger in the first one, at least in terms of the characters.
June
27 Wanted, Kung Fu Panda & Wall-E Yup, hit
the theaters hardcore. I was ready for a good shoot 'em up so we did Wanted
first. Having read the comic, which is a serious experience itself, I thought
they did a pretty good job of translating it into a plot that was easier for the
average movie going audience to digest. A few details seemed a bit out there,
but other than that, I think the director has some great imagination and the
action scenes were great. Nice to see a post-Matrix movie taking hold of that
style and doing its own thing.
Kung-Fu Panda was really enjoyable. I
thought it shined best when they let Jack Black be himself. The opening sequence
was great, like a film version of Samurai Jack. Definitely fun to watch,
especially the fights. A lot of creativity at DreamWorks.
Now, I chose to
watch Kung Fu Panda before Wall-E on purpose. It was definitely a good decision,
because if I had done it the other way around, I don't think I could've finished
Panda. Pixar did what they do best, which is to say, they knocked another grand
slam straight into a different zip code. They thought outside the box and made a
film unlike any of their others. I've criticized Ratatouille and for many
reasons. Basically, everything besides the short at the beginning and the
obligatory Pixar artistry. It was too long, too weird, had a niche subject
matter, forced my disbelief in ways I thought were too ridiculous for the
context...etc. Maybe you liked it, I'd rather watch Incredibles again. But
Wall-E didn't have any of these problems. It gave us an extremely unique cast of
characters that we really enjoyed and cheered for. It was so....for lack of a
better term: cinematic. The opening
shots were so well composed, every frame could be mounted on a wall in an art
gallery. It had a lot of great laughs, amazing character animation, and some
real feeling in it. The pre-movie short was right up there with the best and, as
usual, they had a credits sequence more creative than you could have imagined.
It's definitely something you should see in the theater.
I played through
Half Life 2: Episode 2 finally. I must say that they have not yet shown me
reason to doubt it's the best game ever. The story is really intriguing. I just
love how much I feel like I'm playing a movie. Can't wait to see more. I also
reactivated my WoW account. Can't really play Peggle at work
forever. :)
