new job at MSKCC and i'm loving it
i already incubated and irradiated 50 mice...those suckers crap and piss massively while they're being bombarded with radiation...i also saw a research tech harvest organs from those mice....that includes gasing the mice with ethanol to kill them and dissecting them while their legs are still twitching....nice
o'well...its all for the betterment of mankind
beware of "Graft versus Host Disease," otherwise known as GVHD which is associated with bone marrow transplants
but our lab is trying to alleviate this problem so go ahead and keep on getting those bone marrow transplants as needed....we'll solve the problem in no time....or i'll be out of a job
::edit::
yesterday (friday) was even worse because i had to check up on transplant mice that we procure...these mice are injected with bone marrow, T lymphocytes, and sometimes even tumors....so you can imagine that this mice are pretty freakin sick and the ones with the tumors growing in them are huge...sometimes even growing double in weight because of all the cancerous cells in their bodies....so being the humane people at we are in the lab, if these mice are really full of tumors or paralyzed from them, we sacrifice them instead of waiting for them to die a horrible death....
this may all seem gross and inhumane but someone's gotta do it and i love my job....haha
but as for the disease that we're trying to alleviate at my lab, i will explain a little further.....GVHD or "graft versus host disease" is associated with bone marrow transplants
T cells, which comprise your immune system are made partly in the bone marrow, can attack the recipient's own body....meaning that the donor's T cells which were transplanted can attack the recipient's cells as foreign cells or antigens
this is a serious problem because the one thing that is keeping these people alive (the bone marrow transplant) is also causing them severe pain....the most common GVHD occurs in the gut and the bowl....so you know what that means....severe nausea, diarrhea (which is sometimes uncontrollable), etc...its not a pretty site |
