| | O Canada...again!Wow, finally, an update. Here I am, back in Canada again! Here's a summary of our mega road trip, from Dallas, TX to Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada in 5 days.
Day 1: Plano, TX to Hays, KS Distance: 542 miles Drive Time: approx. 9 hours Highlights: -Stopped in Moundridge, KS for a gasoline stop; it was a Mennonite community, and both people filling up their cars next to us were obviously Mennonites. I didn't even know they drove! -Tried to go and see the World's Largest Prairie Dog, but it was closed. We think it escaped and ate everyone. Hence, it was closed. -Gella's Brewhouse and Restaurant for dinner in Hays; they brew their own root beer and creme soda there- fantastic. -We rented "The Good Shepherd" and watched it that night. Excellent movie.
Day 2: Hays, KS to Parachute, CO Distance: 535 miles Drive Time: approx. 9.5 hours (due to winding mountain roads) Highlights: -beautiful mountain scenery...nuff said -driving through Eisenhower Tunnel, the longest mountain tunnel in the US -stopping and finding great deals at Sports Authority in Silverthorn, CO (such as a North Face jacket for $60) -excellent handmade pizza in Eagle, CO at Pazzo's Pizza -hiking for an hour at a pull-off in Colorado...beautiful views
Day 3: Parachute, CO to Idaho Falls, ID Distance: 538 miles Drive Time: approx. 8.5 hours Highlights: -Visiting Battlement Mesa retirement community, near Parachute...it was freaky and full of old people -more beautiful mountain scenery -stopping in Salt Lake City, Utah (we drove clear through Utah today) and visiting the Mormon Temple Square, HQ for the Mormon Church...it was very beautiful and everyone was very nice -our nice hotel room in Idaho Falls, right next to the falls and jogging trails, and with an outdoor heated pool -Brownstone Brewhouse and Restaurant, for more excellent food -watching Lost, next to last episode!
Day 4: Idaho Falls, ID to Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada Distance: 536 miles Drive Time: about 8 hours Highlights: -driving through beautiful Idaho/Montana territory, complete with snow-capped mountains in the distance and rolling green valleys in the foreground -crossing the border into Canada and acting innocent :) -getting "All Dressed" Ruffles chips (not available in America) right after crossing the border -driving through the smallest town any of us had ever been in and trying to get gas, right before crossing the border...a US Border Patrol truck was driving around inside it
Day 5: Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada to Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada Distance: 540 km (about 324 miles) Drive time: about 6 hours Highlights: -stopping in Vulcan, Alberta and visiting the Star Trek visitors' center, complete with Enterprise bridge mockup -visiting the Royal Tyrell Museum and their amazing dinosaur exhibits, #8 in the world, complete with 2 complete Tyrannosaurus skeletons -making it to Brian's house!!
Total Distance driven: approx 2,475 miles Total Drive time: approx 42 hours States Driven Through: 7 (Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, Idaho, Utah, Montana) Countries Driven Through: 2
