The 2006 Spotlight Awards & Christopher Reeve First Amendment Award presented by THE CREATIVE COALITION and GOTHAM mag
Duvet @ 45 W21st ST.
yeah, I was there tonight, volunteering. But certainly not complaining, I would do it again in a heartbeat. I think I found my passion, PR..
Anyways. So I spent the night as a celebrity's assistant which wasn't all that bad because he ended up introducing me to the other celebrities, it was like I was his date rather than his asisstant. At first I was assigned to Richard Getzer (Munch from Law & Order SVU) but then I got switched to Giancarlo Esposito. Smart move because he was exactly my type of person, whereas Munch was way too quiet for me. Poor guy, he would have to listen to my constant yackity yack. But Giancarlo was so lively and funny, I felt so at home with him.
We were briefed for about 2 minutes each (17 celebrities = 17 assistants) and all of us assistants just stood their staring at each other. I didn't think they would put an inexperienced person in charge of such important people, that is alot of trust and responsibility. So whatever, I warmed up by mingling with the other assistants before I moved on to the people in charge... sort of a warm up. By that time, I had done quite a bit of research on my celebrity Richard Getzer who I will refer to as Munch. So when they Laurie told me I was being swtiched, I was not thrilled. But whatever, I was there for the experience, not to argue. They gave me Giancarlo Esposito... uh who the heck is he?! At first, I thought I was "downgraded" but I soon realized, it was completely the opposite. Apparently, he is a very important person on the Board of committees and he was the "host" for the night. They gave me a picture of him with a run down and two envelopes that held vouchers, money for the goods spread around the room. Duvet is a lounge with beds instead of seating. So all those beds were littered with goods. So basically, once he entered the door and did his interview I was suppose to grab him, introduce myself, usher him into the bar area, get him his drink, get his hat checked, come back, usher him into the vendors area and shop with him. I was allowed to do anything except drink alcohol and take pictures, 2 things that I really like to do. Although I did get to spend two hours shopping with him, shopping is always fun. haha
I have to say pictures are decieving, the picture they gave me did not in any aspect look like the realy person. He brought a friend, Nile, a designer. She was a raspy, older, alcoholic, speak her mind type of lady. She kept chewing on mints while nursing an alcoholic beverage. Her hair was messy. So I had a really bad first impression of her. i wanted his date to look like the other pretty ladies that accompanied the other celebs. But, what can I say... I'm very lovable. My charm worked on her and we hit it off. I was like her old friend. haha get it? i'm OLD

I really don't understand why so many people, especially the staff, wore black. Well, its basic, simple and chic. You really can't go wrong. So whatever, I wasn't wearing black. I think it helped that I didn't wear black because I was alot more approachable and not downright cold and hostile in which I can be at times. Maybe that's why I was able to get some free stuff at the end of the party.
So who did I meet.... I met, Richard Belzer (Munch), Tamara Tunie, Rhonda Mims, Kerry Washington (Mr & Mrs Smith), Marcia Gay Harden, Jason Ritter (Capitol Hill cbs2), Heather Graham, Laurence Fishburne Matrx), Richard Schiff, Sean Penn, Charlie Ross and some other people who I don't really remember. (I have the program in front of me, that's why I can recall who they are)

Wonderful new experience... but at the end of the day I just want to hear someone's nurturing voice. :)
