| EuroTrip pics and vids!Germany, Switzerland, Spain, France and the Czech Republic! 6 cities in 12 days minus travel!
We took 2.5GB worth of pictures and mini-videos!! I've separated them into cities at the bottom. Here's a look at our itinerary:
March 1, Thursday 4:15pm – leave Houston IAH
This was our first time flying with Lufthansa. We arrived at IAH and the line was near the door. Apparently they were having a computer glitch. When they got to us, they checked me in but couldn't check in Farhan and while we waited for them to fix the problem we were the last ones left. My bag had gone on but Farhan's was still sitting there and they reassured us over 10 times that the bag would make it to Germany.
The flight sucked. New plane but one tv for every 3 rows and since a lot of Indian families take this flight all the way to India, I was surrounded by crying children whose parents don't bother to shut them up. I almost got up and slapped one of them.
March 2, Friday 9:10am – arrive Frankfurt
Farhan's bag didn't make it... they gave him a toiletry kit and we moved on to the car rental. Well, frustrated, Farhan broke the navigation system in our Mercedes station wagon and we had to get another rental.... Finally we headed to my cousin's workplace. It was noon already and we were supposed to have been touring Frankfurt. Apparently it only takes two hours to see this city so we toured it with his guidance. Also bought a shirt from H&M there :)
8:00pm – drive to Zurich
March 3, Saturday Zurich
The Swiss Alps baby! I can't put into words how beautiful the mountains are. Pictures just don't do them justice. You really have to be there to get the full experience. It was cold as hell the higher we climbed but we had a great time. We met an Indian couple on the tour and hung out with them the rest of the day. The tour lady suggested this restaurant that served typical Swiss food which includes fondue. We walked in and the smell of weird melted cheese grossed us out, so we opted for Italian which was REALLY REALLY GOOD and much cheaper. That cheese fondue was 24 euros (30 bucks). I'd rather just go to the Melting Pot here.
During this day we kept having transportation mishaps. We got off the wrong stop for the tour pickup, then we got off the wrong stop on the way back to the hotel and had to wait 20 min for the next one. As a result though we got to see the lunar eclipse!
March 4, Sunday Zurich, drive back to Frankfurt
In Germany's autobahn there is no speed limit, so Farhan pushed our Merc station wagon to nearly 220 km/hr! Back in Frankfurt we ate at a Subway. Same food but RUDE people. I mean, you're serving food. Smile!!!!! They just look at you and take your order with no expression on their face. Out of all the countries we visited, Germany was the least friendly.
10:00pm – arrive Girona
Since for Barcelona and Paris, we flew budget airlines, they land in small towns near the big cities. Girona was quite nice though. Homestyle cooking, breakfast included.
March 5, Monday Barcelona
I liked this city quite a bit. Very relaxed and laid back. The people were very friendly. We did the hop on-hop off bus tour which served quite well. It really took us everywhere including the beach. Hello Mediterranean! It was here we found the pastry that came the closest to the Portuguese Bolas. Every time we saw a pastry shop we'd look inside.... we did that a lot as you can imagine. But we found it in the oddest place. Dunkin Donuts in one of the subway stops..... we even came back at the end of the day to eat more! We got a glimpse of life in Spain when we were forced to go shopping for toiletries that the airport made us throw away since the containers were more than 100mL... no deodorant, no toothpaste, no contact solution.... so annoying. It was quite fun though. They have these minimarts that made us feel like were in Portugal again. Very nostalgic. Farhan also played some basketball with some Asians while we waited for our bus back to Girona.
March 6, Tuesday Girona 5:00pm – arrive Paris We arrived and it was rainy and cold. Very miserable! Visited the Arc d' Triomphe and walked the Champs Elysees and dined there. I love Paris!!
March 7, Wednesday Paris
Took a train to Versailles. There are no words to describe the of this palace. Pictures don't do it justice. Louis XIV KNEW how to live it up! The luxury, the opulence, the grandeur. We were totally and absolutely wowed. Some of the walls were velvet, everything was plated in gold, marble everywhere, a themed for just about everything, and a ton of paintings on every ceiling. Not to mention those gardens! so beautiful, so freaking HUGE. We had to take breaks while touring the grounds. The symmetry was genius. The guy who designed the gardens is the same guy who designed the 12 streets that lead up to the Arc d' Triomphe. Definitely a place to return to.
We came back from Versailles and did more sightseeing. Eiffel Tower, the Arc d' Triomphe, the Moulin Rouge. To be standing next to the Eiffel Tower is something else. Climbed all the way to the top of both the Tower and the Arc!! Not an easy feat! They don't let you take the lift unless you're handicapped (well the Tower did have an elevator. hehe) In the Arc, Farhan had to carry me on his back for like 10 steps. LOL. But the views were amazing.
March 8, Thursday Paris
I got myself a shampoo, haircut and style at a salon. I wanted to get styled in France :) We looked for the girliest looking hairdresser! 33 euros (~45 dollars) and I loved it. They gave me a robe, massaged my head. Felt very nice but our camera SD card went screwy so we lost the pics from this morning. We went back to the hotel to get another one and saw a computer repair shop. Farhan was able to converse with the guy in French and describe to him what was wrong. I was QUITE impressed. He held conversations with several people. If Farhan wasn't with me, I would have been lost in Paris! I wouldn't have been able to order anything at non-touristy places.
The main attraction for this day was the Louvre. The Mona Lisa was disappointing but I was expecting it. But you can't visit Paris and NOT see it. LOL. There are a TON of paintings/sculptures in this place. It's amazing. My favorite is the painting of the crowning of Josephine, Napoleon's wife. It's quite large but for some reason, I really really like it. It was also in Versailles.
BTW, our hotel included a big hunk of brie cheese as part of the buffet. Mmmm!!!!!!!!!!!
March 9, Friday
This was a day full of travel. We flew from Paris to Girona and then had 6 hours so we went into Girona city. Quite nice! We figured it was a small poor town but quite the contrary. BMWs, Porsches everywhere! We then flew to Frankfurt where we decided to spend the night since it didn't make sense to spend the money to get to my cousin's place for a mere 4 hours. We felt like bums!!!
March 10, Saturday Prague
Again, cold and cloudy! But what a charming city. I didn't expect to have a good time here but I really loved this city. The people are very friendly. We hopped on a tram for just two stops and this little kid offered us his seat. We just looked at each other and were like WOW. There's a lot to do here. Prague castle (largest in Europe), Charles bridge, old town, new town. We saw an orchestra, a black light musical, cruised on a tour boat, ate Czech goulash(mm mm mmmmmmm!!!!!!), etc. Our days were FULL.
March 11, Sunday Prague
March 12, Monday 10:15am – leave Frankfurt 3:30pm – arrive in Houston IAH
All in all, it was an awesome trip. I had a great time with Farhan and my cousin on the weekends. Even though we were only in each city 1-3 days we still managed to see the entire city and leave satisfied. I would definitely return to Switzerland and see Geneva, which is supposed to be more French given it's location. The Swiss Alps are just breathtaking. I would also return to Paris and Prague. Paris just has this charm about it. It's so pleasant to just sit at a cafe outside and sip espresso and munch on pastry or a baguette.
I gotta say, the hotels we stayed at were all really nice. All 2-star but seemed 3-star by US standards. Also, all public bathrooms in all cities were super clean. Shiny porcelain everywhere. This really surprised me.
We walked a LOT. I mean A LOT. Everyday we would come back to the hotel exhausted but thankfully one night's rest recharged us completely. I don't think I could do this kind of trip when I'm older. It would have to be at a more sedate pace.
The food everywhere was awesome. Tasted fresh, healthy, no preservatives, no additives. Just plain good. No food comas. Actually yesterday, I was craving European food for lunch. Everything here felt heavy to me. I also tried the espresso in each city. They were all very similar to Bica, Portuguese espresso. Mm mm mm!!!!!
Okay, enough with the narration. On with the pics!! They include one or two short (less than 1 min) videos as well, so don't forget those! They lost quality when I uploaded them but they're still viewable. You may need to exercise some patience while the pics/vids load. Let me if ti doesn't work.

Like you need to go to school. Pshhhh. We saw 6 cities in 12 days! And we thoroughly toured and enjoyed them all. It was an absolute blast. Frankfurt, Germany Zurich, Switzerland Gerona, Spain Barcelona, Spain Paris, France Prague, Czech Republic We met Portuguese people along the way and chatted with them. In portuguese!! Farhan did most of the talking. That boy is amazing. Spoke fluent Portuguese AND French. The dood held an entire conversation with this French guy in a computer repair shop about our broken SD card. I was thoroughly impressed. Anyhoos, I'll post pictures once Farhan finishes cleaning them up. We got some vids as well. Tab | | |
