Yesturday we played the most amazing game of ultimate I have ever been apart of. The team I was playing with, the KC club team, rolled through our all of our games on both Saturday and Sunday. I got 5 d's on Saturday alone, and played some of the best ultimate I have ever played. Although we were short handed (We had 13 players, with Bear, an older guy who doesnt play much, as one of those) we had no trouble completely murdering teams. The closest score until finals was 13-5 against Wash U. A large crowd of friends (Bettys, Zontals) and other players whose games were done lined the sidelines of our final game against Rawhide, an experienced Tulsa club team that we have never lost too. They had over 25 guys, and looked pretty psyched up. We started the game by pulling to them, and they immediately jumped out all over us. Before we knew it, we were down 4-0, and the energy on the sidelines was flat. After a quick timeout by our captain Aaron, which involved alot of cussing, we recieved a pull for an upwind point. With some expert dump swing by our handles, we ended the point with a pretty, spot on huck to a wide open Kevin Kelly. This opened the flood gates for our team. On the back of several layout and poach d's, we went on a 4-1 tear, and the game was tied 5 all. We traded points to make it 6-6, and took half 7-6 on an amazing grab by Jack McFarland in the far left corner of the endzone. Jack skyed one guy, landed on top of him, and still got a lone foot in bounds to make the score offical. The crowd went absolutely bonkers. We traded points through the second half. We went down 9-10, then went on a 3-0 run to make it 12-10. Game point for us. We lost two points in a row trying to end the game in a hurry instead of running the normal KC dump swing chilly offense to win. The scored was tied 12-12, game to 13. I had not played the last two points prior to double game becuase I am not a very good defensive player. So when we were on offense on double game point, I went in. I was not nervous at all. I was just thinking about how good I felt, and how much fun I was having. Caleb was hilariously Caleb on the line. The crowd was super loud and everyone was on their feet. People were freaking out. And Caleb asks the count, and everyone stares at him for a moment, and we are like "Caleb, its fucking double game point." And his face filled with wonder, and he said "wow, well, I guess we gotta score" Tulsa pulled, and the crowd was amazingly loud. Schieber caught the pull in the front left corner of the endzone and swung it to caleb. Caleb was in the center of the endzone and had a look down field. The guy gaurding me snaked off on the strong side, so I called poach and Caleb swung the disc to me. The Tulsa fans smelled blood on our three horizontal passes in our own endzone and streamed down to the sidelines yelling "CALLAHAN!!" I looked down the strong side, but Kevin and Joey were being fronted and were having a hard time making in cuts. At around stall six I saw Bruce come under on the weak side. Without really thinking about how I am not supposed to break people ( I admit its one of my big weaknesses as an ultimate player) I stretched out low and fired a I/O two finger below the mark's hands to Bruce about 25 yards upfield. The entire Tulsa sidelines eurupted in a deafening "UP" call. It seemed like 100 people yelled it at once. Bruce caught it with ease and hit Schieber on a gun slinger. Schieber then fired it to a wide open 20 yard gain to Kevin Kelly as the Tulsa sideline again eurupted in one, deafining "UP" call.
I sprinted off down the weak side, as Schieber went behind Kevin for a dump. Right behind Schieber was the best athlete on Tulsa, Jeff, who barely missed a layout D on the dump and barreled into Schieber.

Schieber called a foul and we set up again. The crowd was deafening as this point, as we were only about 20 yards away from the endzone. It was so loud we couldnt call poachs and the handles couldnt communicate about in and out verbally. It was amazing. Schieber tapped the disc in and hit Kevin again underneath. Joey wasnt open and Kevin turned for the dump. Schieber went behind him again, but that throw was cut off by the mark. Schieber cleared out and Lazer moved and and sprinted off downline. At Stall six Kevin put Caleb a somewhat floaty forehand and Caleb ran under it. He skyed for the catch in the front corner of the endzone. Just as he was about to catch it, a defender from Rawhide poached off and also jumped for the disc. Caleb beat him to it in the air, but the two collided just after Caleb snagged it. Caleb landed on his back inbounds and the pro kansas fans swarmed all over him. Amazing game. Awesome finish. Love, Tom |
