  • old new york

I've spent this past month in New York living with old people. My grandparents live up here (all my grandparents? both sets of grandparents? however you say it), and to get out of the house I was sent up here to visit them.

The elderly seem to complain. A lot. And marvel at things ("his camera takes video and sound!"). And talk a lot. And they're very finicky about things.

I did do some sight-seeing with my (maternal) grandparents. The best thing was by far the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, in NYC. It was the church my mother attended as a child and a tourist attraction. It's packed on holidays, but there were few people there when I visited. Even though it was under construction in parts, as it has been for years, it was beautiful beyond words. It's a huge place, entirely of stone, mostly in gothic style. Stained glass, plaques, and engravings everywhere. Aside from the main altar and sanctuary, there are seven distinct chapels. The Chapels of the Tongues are each devoted to a different nation, with a different style and saint, in honor of the immigrants that came through Ellis Island. The one devoted to Spain has a bad roof, so it's closed off. They were all amazing and indescrible, but the one that I remember best was the French chapel of St. Martin. On one wall stands a statue of St. Joan of Arc with a piece of her prison cell at the feet. I love historic churches and could have spent all day exploring, but I kept it short (40 minutes). I didn't take any pictures because... well, I couldn't just take snapshots of all this with my phone. There were cloisters and stairwells closed off, but more in-depth tours are given regularly. Hopefully I can go back and take some pictures.

Yesterday my old aunts took me to the Queens Museum. Even though most of the day was a horrible ordeal, I did get to see the Worlds Fair structures up close. My cell phone camera wouldn't have done them justice, but this is what I'm talking about:

    200px-New_York_Worlds_Fairgrounds   (I saw these things.)      120px-WorldFairTower1

After that we went to this Italian restaurant. I satisfied a week-long salmon craving with spaghetti salmone, which was something I would never eat (creamy and fishy?) but it was delicious. For dessert I had this mousse cake that was so good I had to take a picture of it. The espresso was horrible.

After many long weeks, I'm finally leaving tomorrow to visit my dad in Curacao. He's lived there for 3 or 4 years, but spent last year in Florida so we didn't go. Maybe I can finally, finally get my scuba certification. Last time we did this:

    THE GIRLS AND DOLPHINS 002

Strange to say, but after 2 years, I'm a little tired of swimming with dolphins. At least in their enclosure.... There's an open dive/snorkel opportunity with two of the dolphins by a reef not too far from the facility. Only done that once, and it was wonderful.

I'll fill you in when I get back in July. No internet until then!

    "lost": future theories

Originally posted as a comment on another Xanga. Reposted here for my own records, and for your consideration:

I was thinking that Jack referenced the deaths he did was because those deaths fit in the context of a plane crash (Charlie drowned, Boone fell)... but Libby doesn't fit. I don't remember what he said about her, but I do remember she was shot. Boone and Charlie each played major roles: Boone found the hatch, Charlie removed the block in the Swan and warned against the freighter. Libby... was Hurley's love interest and "mind frak". She didn't play as big a role as Ana Lucia did, and since they died in the same way, I would expect Jack to name AL, not Libby. I think he did it for Hurley: it was an homage to someone his friend cared for.

Getting the Losties back together to return to the Island is going to a daunting task, but Jack won't have to do it by himself. A few weeks of being haunted by Losties past should make convincing everyone easier. Even though only Hurley and Jack have be given direct mandates to go back (and Claire didn't tell Kate not to go, even though she won't go without Aaron), I predict Christian and Co., Messages From Beyond the Grave, will do their share next season. And since Christian has appeared off-Island, and is clearly in the know through Jacob, finding the Island might not be such a challenge either. Getting there though....

I wouldn't be surprised if they had to seek help from Widmore. He wants to find the Island, and Penny connects the two factions (even though her head is being hunted by the leader of Team Ben). I expect next season to be centered around the Widmore issue. I don't think everyone will get back to the island until the final season.

"lost" as it happens: "there's no place like home"

First this. Nothing new, but some confirmation.

I'm away from home so I'm not on my usual computer, and this browser makes Xanga do weird things with double-spacing, so I had to do weird things to counteract that later on.

I didn't plan on doing a commentary on the commentary, and I seemed to be right when the first little tibits popped up ("'There's No Place Like Home' is an homage to The Wizard of Oz"; "Kate was a fugitive at the time of the flight" -- wow, what insight). But then they started actually revealing relevant information about the Oceanic Cover-up. "The Oceanic 6 are the only survivors known to the outside world." So now we know that

    • Oceanic doesn't know that it's a lie.
    • The Oceanic 6 are presumably the ones who concocted the story. Why? (Maybe Widmore went to them directly?)
    • They acknowledge some of the deaths that happened on the island (Boone fell, Charlie drowned).
    • Aaron is actually 2 mo. old. Well, I could have found that out myself, but I was worried about a 5 week old was so huge.

I have to look over the cover story again, because it still doesn't make sense to me. Or maybe it just doesn't make sense at all. Like why did it take so long for the survivors to be recovered? I mean someone on the island they found had a freaking camera, they couldn't have been that isolated.

    Other new things I noticed:

    • Something on the beach when Sayid arrived in his dinghy. Sea turtle? Murdered doctor? Looking up screencaps.
    • 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42 show up twice at Hurley's party: once on the speedometer, and throughout the crowd. It's not over!
    • If I heard correctly, Sawyer actually calls Hurley 'Hugo' when he and Jack meet up with Lapidus.

9 o' clock, season finale time! I was really hoping they'd jump right into it without showing credits. Or any of this "Previously on 'Lost'" crap. We just saw "previously on 'Lost'", you made sure of that! Stupid move, producers.

    • Ah, never mind. We're starting in the future... three years into the future. Evie is a great actress.
    • "Hugo" again, what's up with that? Sawyer's changed dramatically since the barracks, I suppose this is part of that.
    • Irrelevant, but I watched Daniel Dae Kim in "The Andromeda Strain" the other day. Hope to see him in more awesome projects like that.
    • "Whispers are a sign that danger is near" said the commentary. And they seem to be indiscriminate as to who they warn.
    • Good to see the two island factions teaming up like this. Warms my heart (awww).
    • "They help us free you, we let them off the island." It's their decision? And thus, two more of the Oceanic Six escape.
    • Flashforward to Hurley in the mental hospital. Adult Walt! I missed most of the opening credits, but that's Malcolm David Kelley alright.
    • Who did Walt say came to see him? Ah, Jeremy Bentham (one of my favorite philosophers, a utilitarian I think -- not surprised by who it turned out to be).
    • "We're lying to protect the ones who didn't make it off the island." We can trust Hurley.
    • Jack is aggressively ignorant, as always, to the power of the island.
    • "Lie to them.... If you do it half as well as you lie to yourself...." Great line.
    • So this is good-bye for Locke and Jack.
    • "After all that time you spent trying to get back here" Charlotte? Some possible connection to her excavation in Tunisia?
    • Look, it's the time machine! Once again, I call the improbable and I'm right!
    • Ben's cramming the Vault chock-full of metallic objects. Locke, don't even ask questions.
    • Electromagnets, negative something or others. I was too awed to get any of that.

A commercial in which polar bears follow some kids around. Doesn't seem to be connected to "Lost", but my first thought was that we were glimpsing what would happen if Widmore found and marketed the Island. Wormhole polar bears for everyone!

    • Looks like the Sawyer/Kate/Jack love triangle is over once and for all. Or at least Kate's not jerking people around.
    • Um, we have to lose Sawyer before they get off the Island. He doesn't seem to want to bail out either. Don't die Sawyer, please!
    • Keamy is unstoppable in his pursuit of Ben. Also, he seems to be a tad psychotic. If Keamy dies, he's taking the whole freighter with him.
    • In my opinion, Locke is getting better with every episode. So is Ben.
    • Charlotte thinks she can stay on the island temporarily. "Looking for where I was born." Okay then. Not asking questions.
    • Everyone is headed toward the wired boat. Suspense!
    • That was a weird shot with Sayid sticking his head out of the chopper.
    • They're emptying the chopper. Saywer you are so noble.
    • Good-bye, Sawyer. Wait, swim back to the island!
    • Assassin Sayid is oh so suave. But why is he at Hurley's hospital?
    • I didn't catch that name and I have no subtitles! Who committed suicide? Jeremy Bentham again, I assume.
    • Eko visits too? That makes sense. At least Hurley's not lonely.
    • I really hope Sawyer survived. Or at least I hope they let me believe Sawyer survives.
    • Jin why would you risk your life when your marriage is happy and your wife is pregnant?
    • Michael is all about family, as he has proved time and time and time again.
    • "Lost" does excellent death scenes.
    • Christian Shephard, the angel of death. Calling Michael to join him.
    • Now where are the Oceanic Six bound?
    • Widmore. Assassinate him, Sun! So they know about Widmore's involvement. Maybe next season (if there is one) will be about unraveling this mystery.
    • Sawyer lived and is a world-class swimmer! Or he's a ghost. Sadly, the latter is incredibly likely.
    • So everyone stays on the Island but the person who moves it.
    • "Sorry for making your life so miserable." I don't think he hated it.
    • Ha, it's like the end of The Lion King when Simba takes over.
    • Secret passageways everywhere. Wtf, this particular hidden spot is creepy and very cool.
    • Wow. So that's how you move an island.
    • Oh the suspense. Maybe the Oceanic Six Official Cover Story isn't a total lie.
    • Desmond has to live to get back to Penny. There would be no justice in the world if he dies before then.
    • "Who's there?" It's Christian Shephard. Close enough, it's one of Christian Shephard's recruits. (Just look at Aaron's cute little bed!)
    • "It's a miracle," says Kate. "He moved the island," says Hurley. "Pssh, whatever," says Jack. Aggressively ignorant. Why can't he just let the astonishment wash over like I do.
    • Well, if you don't lie you'll all be locked up in mental institution, because what happened to you was ridiculous.
    • Did someone say Widmore? It's Penny!
    • Penny's crew, at least, is in on the lie.
    • By the way, Penny, your father is a evil mastermind who made our final days on the Island very difficult. What do you want to do about this?
    • How exactly are the islanders in danger? No one knows where the island is, and who's to say Widmore won't keep searching anyway?
    • Okay, here we are. The much debated funeral scene. Behind curtain number one... watch the show end without revealing it, ha.
    • Hi, Ben. Jack looks like a child that knows he's done something wrong.
    • "All of you have to go back"! The Island wants them all.
    • It's Locke in the coffin? I called it, I win!

do this thing! now! or, Same-Sex Marriage Feedback

    Stolen from somewhere on LJ:
"As you presumably know, California's recent court decision regarding same-sex marriage was a huge fucking deal. It was historic, long overdue, and took a hell of a lot of fighting.

Unfortunately (and not surprisingly) Governor Schwarzenegger is receiving tons of phone calls from the supporters of 'Limits on Marriage' (the constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage in California) about his comment to a group of Log Cabin Republicans that he wouldn't support a constitutional amendment which discriminates against gays by defining marriage as only being between a man and woman.

We don't want him to go back on his word. So he needs to hear from us, too.

Calling to voice your support for California's gay marriage ruling means calling an automated system; you won't have to talk to anyone. And you can call even if you're not from California. So please, the more the better.

The number is 1-916-445-2841; press 1, 5, 1 to get to the particular issue, then press 1 if you want to support upholding the court decision and are against a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage."

You'd be calling the governor's office directly (it's pretty cool to hear "thank you for calling the office of Arnold Schwarzenegger"). Press 1 for English, 5 for "hot button current issue" or something, and 1 for support (or 2 is you are a mean person who enjoys revoking other people's rights, your choice).

Alternatively, you can email here. Pick "Supreme Court Decision on Same Sex Marriage", then I think you're supposed to choose "pro" on the next screen.

I knoooow! And to think, she picked this all up in less than 24 hours. It's like, don't even try to stop her from doing anything, because it's gonna be borderline miraculous.
