| Dad's bday todayIt was with such care that mom clipped the encroaching shoots of grass from around the edge of dad's grave marker, and then wiped its smooth marble surface with a damp towel. She had brought a little trowel to clear away the clover from the planter set in the ground to place inside and arrange the two bouquets of roses we'd bought for the occasion. She also cut a beautiful fiery little long-stemmed rose from the garden to place in the arrangement - the bright red petal tips faded to yellow, and it was much more beautiful than the pale pink and lavender roses from the store. Dad loved roses the most and tended to the rose bushes at the Simi Valley house, and the San Jose house, with such attentiveness and devotion. When mom was done, she prayed. Meanwhile, a particularly long and energetic earthworm wriggled up from the side of the marker and made a lazy trail along one of the marker's sides. It was sunny and warm. I still can't believe he's gone.
