Don't Worry!

I am a worrier by nature. I’ve always been one. I come from a long line of worriers and I think I will always face the temptation to worry.  I’m not your average worrier either, you know people who worry about what if I can’t find a good job, should I take this one or that, how will I know what God’s will is, will I ever be married.  No…most of those things don’t plague me too often. It doesn't mean, they never do, just not very often.

 No, I worry about:

  • Someone feeling left out because we don’t have enough chairs at the table at lunch.

  • How to solve world hunger and how do relief agencies cope when they run out of food during a distribution?
  • What happens if I don’t lose the weight, or if I don’t get my visa?  If these don’t work out, was I wrong about my calling?
  • That children will injure themselves when they’re playing.
  • That if I don’t remember to shut off my lava lamp in the morning that I’ll burn down the house and kill my poor little dogs.
  • That 50% of my friends marriages will end in divorce.
  • That someone is mad at me and I’ve left things unreconciled. (even if I don’t know what I’ve done wrong)
  • That I am loud, abrasive and hurtful and don’t even know it (because people are too afraid to tell me).
  • That my mom will fall and hurt herself when I’m away for a weekend and she won’t be able to call for help.

And the list goes on and on!  The fact is we all have stuff we worry about.

In Luke 12: 22-34:

22Then Jesus said to his disciples: "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. 23Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. 24Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! 25Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? 26Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?

27"Consider how the lilies grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 28If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith! 29And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. 30For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. 31But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.

32"Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. 33Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. 34For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

We have been commanded to not worry.  Yet we do.  We could choose to be condemned by that.  I mean these commands are tough. Just Don’t Worry About it right?  That’s all.  What good does it do?  You can’t change anything…why worry?  While that is all true, we can feel like we really suck because of this passage….…except the passage is contains much more logic, reasoning and gentleness than that.

Let’s look at it one more time:

We can choose to replace lies with truth until we are confident that God is perfectly trustworthy. We can be confident that He loves us, and He is a good Father that provides all we need.  He cares deeply about Birds, how much more about us?  He knows we need these things (he doesn’t deny we need food and clothing)?

But there’s a big elephant in this passage that no one really wants to deal with or take on.  I don’t want to deal with it or take it on, but I feel compelled to.

If you read all of this in context, he just got done telling a parable about the man who kept building more buildings to hold all of his crops, just to die that very night and have nothing to show for his life’s work.  And then he goes on to tell them not to worry.  It’s all temporary, so don’t worry about he temporary.

Basically He is trying to draw a contrast and get things in perspective here.  WHAT ARE WE LIVING FOR?  Well there was a building project that Jesus seemed to be a bit preoccupied with.  He was all about building the KINGDOM.  Basically Jesus was saying, if you’re living for the Kingdom, food and clothes are a minor concern compared to God’s work being done and people being invited to live under His benevolent Kingship!

If we’re going to lose sleep, it’s only worth if it is because we are praying for more laborer’s, or spending time with people to help them take a step toward Christ, or feeding the poor.  Jesus lost sleep for these things.

Finally, the doozy in this passage is when Jesus says sell all your possessions, and give to the poor.  What?  That is always tough for us to swallow.  I never know what to do with this.  I’m not at a place in my walk with God and faith that I am ready to make this step.  I think that’s ok…There is much of the Bible I’m not living out yet.  God does the changing in my heart and life, if I will just submit to the Spirit as he leads me through transformation.  But If and when God finally says to me, Stacy…do it I’m going to have to make my choice.

But lest we leave and be condemned (and feel hopeless) by this command of Jesus’, let’s keep this in context and rest in His goodness one more time.  Jesus says “sell all your possessions…” because a majority of our worry comes as a result of our possessions.  We worry about losing our possessions, protecting our possessions, gaining more possessions.  If we get rid of them, we are free to and forced to trust Christ for all we need, and we are free to focus on the Building Project.  He tells us this, because  He loves us.

So, there you have it.  I’m not there! I’m vulnerable and honest about it, and I ask God to keep working in me and making me more like him.  But I choose to not live and think like a failure, but to submit myself humbly to his transformative work with great hope and peace that He will answer that prayer and change me in His perfect time.

Wow...it's been a while

  • Hey Everyone...this will be a super short update to just tell you a few things.
  • Life is busy all the way around. It's always this way as the school year is drawing to a close and people are making decisions....so lots of meetings for me.
  • Only 6 more days of the legislative session left. That also means only 6 more days for Ernie to do his work.  I really am going to miss him
  • In May I will be stepping out of serving in the college group at my church. This will be a strange, sad, and exciting transition.  I have been in college group for over 6 years now, and it has impacted my life in so many ways.  I have been transformed during my time there, so many people poured into me and loved me.  I can only hope I was able to give back some of what I received!  I'll probably blog specifically on what the group has meant to me, sometime in May.
  • Well it looks as though I will not be making my April 15th weight-loss goal. That is ok.  I can not beat myself up over it, it just means I have extra work extra hard the next time around.
  • But I did reach a big milestone on Friday.  I do weigh-ins every Friday just for my own accountability and for the first time in many, many years I am under 300 lbs.  It was a huge deal to me, to see that 2 in front of my numbers for a change.  CRAZY!
  • Finally, I wanted to close today with just a word of Gratitude! We have so much to be thankful for and so much to praise God for.  I've posted the lyrics of a great old hymn below.  The lyrics of this song remind me of the goodness of God!  Read it and spend a moment thanking God!
  • For The Beauty Of The Earth Hymn

For the beauty of the earth,
For the beauty of the skies,
For the love which from our birth
    Over and around us lies,
Lord of all, to thee we raise
This our grateful hymn of praise.

For the beauty of each hour
Of the day and of the night,
Hill and vale, and tree and flower,
Sun and moon and stars of light,
Lord of all, to thee we raise
This our grateful hymn of praise.

For the joy of human love,
    Brother, sister, parent, child,
Friends on earth, and friends above,
    Pleasures pure and undefiled,
Lord of all, to thee we raise
This our grateful hymn of praise.

For each perfect gift of thine,
To our race so freely given,
    Graces human and divine,
Flowers of earth and buds of heaven,
Lord of all, to thee we raise
This our grateful hymn of praise.

    For thy Church which evermore
    Lifteth holy hands above,
    Offering up on every shore
    Her pure sacrifice of love,
Lord of all, to thee we raise
This our grateful hymn of praise.

Well Howdy Do!

  • Hey everyone, just thought I'd give you a quick update!
  • I also just realized that I really slacked off and didn't post anything after two major events.
  • The first event was the oscars!  I know! I'm a total slacker.
  • I thought the Oscars was awesome and in many ways HISTORIC!
  • It was historic because the right people won best original song, but not only that their performance of the song was stellar!
  • But wait...that's not all folks.  During their acceptance speech Glen Hansard got done speaking and Markéta Irglová hesitated for a moment, and then stepped up to the mike and just as she did, she was played off the stage.
  • We (and by we, I mean Stacey D. and I) were really bummed about it, but we figured there was nothing they could do about it now....or could they?
  • After the commercial break, Jon Stewart announced that the producers felt horrible for playing her off and invited her back to give her acceptance speech! I've never, ever, ever seen something like that.  On top of all that, her speech brought me to tears.  It was well worth it and I'm so glad they let her speak!
  • As I hoped No Country for Old Men walked away with the most Oscars, including best picture.  But I thought the oscars were pretty well distributed for all of the movies I loved.
  • That is with the exceptions of Diving Bell and Butterfly, which I thought was incredible!  I sobbed, audibly and somewhat uncontrollably, but it was very good.
  • ANYWAY...the next big event was the first bench mark that I had set up in my weight loss goals. I made it to March 1st and never told you what happened.
  • Well your anticipation can subside and you can breathe out, because I made it!  I was supposed to lose 9 lbs by March 1, and I lost 10 by March 1st. WHOOOO!
  • One some of the of goals, I have attached rewards.  So at 100 lbs (which is about 18 lbs away from here) I get to buy a Fossil Watch for myself. I've always really liked fossil watches, but have never felt comfortable splurging that much for a watch.  Well I think 100 lbs is a good enough reason
  • And at 150 lbs!  I get a Tattoo!!!  Whooo!  So excited about that.  But don't ask me what I'm getting. I don't know yet. And I've decided not to put too much thought into it yet, as I don't want to get myself all excited about it until I know I can get it
  • So, the Legislature is really jumping!  Starting monday, there are only 18 days in the legislative session left!  That is crazy considering all the bills yet to be debated and voted on.
  • But for those of you keeping track, The DEATH PENALTY REPEAL bill is up for debate starting Tuesday, March 25 (so that will definitely slow us down).
  • Honestly, I am really going to miss Ernie Chambers I have SO MUCH RESPECT for that man.  He amazes me.  I am so sad to think we only have 18 more days of his signing, and teaching, and ranting.  It will never be the same, and I may not even bother watching the debates anymore.  I may cry on his last day....and maybe hug him against his will   Alright, I'll ask first!
  • So, I just wanted to share a positive story about a Starbucks employee.  This was truly incredible.  Granted the story is about the amazing sacrifice about this person, I don't mind starbucks getting a little advertising for truly amazing stories like this (not like the pay for the person behind you story)
  • There, don't say I can't ever post a positive story.
  • But while I'm on the subject of my least favorite corporations.
  • Have you seen the new WALMART easter commercial?  What the honk is that all about?
  • Can anyone say "Walmart is promoting childhood obesity"? OY!
  • This commercial has little children listing off all sorts of candy they love, and gorging themselves on jellybeans and Cadbury eggs, and all sorts of yummy SUGAR!
  • One kid is sitting there saying, Milk chocolate, dark chocolate, white chocolate....
  • Then the mom comes on and says "At Walmart prices, I can afford to stuff their easter baskets with all the stuff they want"!
  • Maybe people should go somewhere else and pay full-price so that they don't give there kids 25 lbs of candy, just because they can afford to!
  • SWEET MERCY! Where are all the analysts ranting and raving about this?
  • They say that cigarette companies market to kids and that is horrible. But they say nothing when Walmart markets nothing but candy to children.  What is wrong with this picture.
  • So I decided to google this issue and see if all these action groups are up in arms over it.
  • NOPE!
  • Parents are steaming mad about this commercial, but not for this reason. They've got much larger issues with this commercial. You see this commercial tells kids that the EASTER BUNNY doesn't exist.  It gives it away, that the parents are buying the candy and filling the baskets!
  • There is a whole letter writing campaign to chastise Walmart for revealing this state secret to their children before the appropriate age!
  • There are days that I'm truly ashamed to associate myself with Americans.

Just a quick vent

In the past few days I have observed a (probably) unintended attitude shift in regard to crime, but I'm not pleased with it and I just thought I'd raise your radar to it.

Two nights ago, I was watching the news and they were interview Lincoln Police Chief Cassidy about recent vandalism to cars in a few Lincoln neighborhoods.......

Cheif Cassidy said "The problem is that people are parking their cars on the streets and making them easy targets for vandals."

Did you hear that?  It's those darn victims leaving their cars out and about for vandals to go after.  What are those poor vandals to do....they just can't help themselves.  What if you don't have a drive way or garage?  What options do you have?  Are you going to drive your car into the house, like you would with your bicycle?  RIDICULOUS!  It's the fault of the CRIMINAL not the VICTIM.

I was quite annoyed with that, but I let it slide....thinking it really wasn't what was meant.

Then last night I was watching the news and they said that ipod owners were the cause of a rise in violent crimes.  Wait...Ipod owners are going on a crime spree?  No, what they meant was, that ipods are sooooo tempting for thieves that they'll stop at nothing to get them from us.  So, they are turning to violent crime to get their hands on these hot items.

Then I read in the Lincoln Journal Star this morning:
"Do you own an Ipod?  Are you the reason that violent crime has gone up for the first time in 14 years.

This is a ridiculous connection in the first place. But even if it were connected to ipods, how is it my fault, as the victim?  (in the newspapers defense, they were saying there is no connection in Lincoln, but the theory seems to hold nation-wide oy!)

Where is the responsibility of the Criminal?  How did the blame get put on the victims here?

I guess I did notice a couple of months ago when there were all these apartment break ins that Cheif Cassidy said "The problem is that there are all these college students with laptops, living in apartments...it's just too tempting for thieves!"

This stupid thinking has to stop!  It is not the victims fault.

This is just as ridiculous as saying that a woman who is often scantily clad, had it coming if she is raped!  That is absolutely ludicrous and ignorant.

I am so angry that society is making excuses for the criminal and blaming the victim.

So, there you have it.  It's all your fault, you car-driving, street-parking, ipod and laptop owning, apartment-dwelling, mini-skirt wearing bunch of hooligans!

LORD HELP US!

and breathe out

Ramblings....Some Hopeful, Some Grumpy

  • After much discussion with a few friends and thinking through this myself, I decided that since I've been incredibly open and honest about this experience with the whole weight loss surgery journey, that I would share my weight loss goals with y'all.
  • I have been reading The Success Habits of Weight-Loss Surgery Patients and the first section of the book is all about goal-setting.  So a while back I wrote down benchmarks in that I'm hoping to reach and in a brave move...I'm posting them here.
  • I need to lose a total of 135 lbs! To that end I need to:
    • Lose 9 lbs by march 1st
    • Lose 25 lbs by April 15th
    • Lose 50 lbs by July 4th
    • Lose 75 lbs by Sept 5th
    • Lose 100 lbs by Nov. 11th
    • Lose 125 lbs by Jan 16th
    • Lose 135 lbs by Feb. 28th
  • And one other non-scale goal is to climb to the 3rd floor without getting winded by May 1st.
  • Now, I recognize these are pretty lofty goals, but they are not unreasonable or unattainable.  It will just require hard work.  So, Let the Games Begin!
  • At last weigh in, I am down 76 lbs, which means that I only have 4 more lbs to go to make the March 1st goal.  SWEET!
  • In other news, I went to Kearney yesterday to see my friend Dawn and my friend Amy (and her totally awesome kids).  It was a good time and I should make it out there more often, considering its only 1.5 hours away
  • I've decided that I'm ridiculously cynical, jaded, and maybe just realistic about the state of democracy in our state (NE) and country (USA).
  • I get annoyed when the legislators in the "Great State of NE" start using ridiculously over-dramatic rhetoric like "to protect the sanctity of the second house (or voters rights)" or "we need to protect our old people from those thugs with pens (referring to petitioners)". Get real! Most Nebraskans can't even tell you what the second house is in Nebraska. Thank goodness you protected its sanctity.
  • I like it better when law-makers say stuff like "The AARP is for this legislation. There's a lot of people in the AARP...that means there are a lot of voters in the AARP.  So I'm going to have to support the AARP and support this legislation."  It may represent horrible motivation, but at least he's honest!
  • Again, I think I will join the majority of citizens and just stop tracking politics all together.  They seem much happier than me and my friends who track what's going on in the world.
  • My lips are dry....I don't think I'm drinking enough water.  I should "correct" that.  What, no Shining fans out there?
  • Ryan Onstad and I saw two movies this weekend. We saw Definitely, Maybe and The Assassination of Jesse James.
  • Ryan really liked Definitely, Maybe....I was just indifferent.  I loved Abigail Breslin ( I always do), but frankly the character development was so poor, I could care less what happened to anyone, so I didn't care about the outcome.  It wasn't bad, just not moving.  Over all I was kind of bored.
  • But nothing prepared Ryan and I for how horrid the Assassination of Jesse James was going to be (except for Kelsey, who tried to tell me it was horrible).  It was horrible. Ryan decided it was sort of like an Iron Man competition, to see which of us could actually keep our eyes open through that snore-fest.  It was horrid, and really a disappointment considering Casey Affleck's stellar work in Gone Baby Gone.  I think it was just a really poor screen play.
Anyway...Lunch hour is over. I should get back to work.  Hope you are all doing wonderfully!
