| | TrackersThere has been a lot of talk lately about the use of trackers. Some seem to like them, some seem to think they're ok, some are indifferent; and some people don't like them at all.
Some think they are used as spy tools; others are afraid that they might stimulate a stalker. Personally, I don't see how that could be. If a reader enjoys what we have to say and the way we say it, then we should expect that person to return again and again. That doesn't mean they are stalking us. It says they like us. So what's the problem. If we find that troubling, then we shouldn't be blogging at all.
I think trackers can be useful if for no other reason than that they provide ids to other sites - sites we may enjoy reading. They also have brought people to my site when they see that I've been to their site.
A genuine stalker, by the way, would tend to be discouraged, rather then encouraged, by a tracker. Which brings be to a question. I've noticed that some people say they have a tracker, but they do not display any portion of the tracker results, while I and some others show a partial list of visitors to our sites. That way people can see the tracker.
Is it right to show a list of users reading my site? Or does it scare people away? Would it be better to hide the tracker from my readers, or would that be deceitful? Or should I abandon the tracker altogether? |
