| | A Pet Friendly Work EnvironmentI came across an article on the Reuters News Service that says, "More than 400 companies -- among them Google Inc. -- have listed themselves as dog-friendly," meaning that they allow pet owners to bring their dogs to work with them. According to the article, one survey showed that one company in 5 allows employees to bring their pets to work. That sounds a bit high to me, but then my experience has mostly been with very large corporations.
I did work for a smaller company once, and people could and did bring their dogs to work occasionally. Some companies have said the policy lowers absenteeism. I don't know about that, but I'm sure it encourages employees to work a little later into the evening. I know I would have loved to be able to bring a dog to work with me.
We work so many hours these days that it's hard on our pets, who need to be outdoors for "personal" reasons more frequently that we humans can provide for with today's hectic work environment. Not only that, but dogs need companionship that we can't give them when we're at work. And let's face it, we need the companionship of our dogs too. They help keep us relaxed and feeling good, which can't help but make us better equipped to deal with the work environment.
I know that I have not had a dog in recent years, solely because of my work schedule. Cats can be alone for 14 hours a day. Dogs can not.
So tell me, would you be willing to take a 5% pay cut for the privilege of being able to take your dog to work with you?
