A Pet Friendly Work Environment

I came across an article on the Reuters News Service that says, "More than 400 companies -- among them Google Inc. -- have listed themselves as dog-friendly," meaning that they allow pet owners to bring their dogs to work with them. According to the article, one survey showed that one company in 5 allows employees to bring their pets to work. That sounds a bit high to me, but then my experience has mostly been with very large corporations.

I did work for a smaller company once, and people could and did bring their dogs to work occasionally. Some companies have said the policy lowers absenteeism. I don't know about that, but I'm sure it encourages employees to work a little later into the evening. I know I would have loved to be able to bring a dog to work with me.

We work so many hours these days that it's hard on our pets, who need to be outdoors for "personal" reasons more frequently that we humans can provide for with today's hectic work environment. Not only that, but dogs need companionship that we can't give them when we're at work. And let's face it, we need the companionship of our dogs too. They help keep us relaxed and feeling good, which can't help but make us better equipped to deal with the work environment.

I know that I have not had a dog in recent years, solely because of my work schedule. Cats can be alone for 14 hours a day. Dogs can not.

So tell me, would you be willing to take a 5% pay cut for the privilege of being able to take your dog to work with you?

Without actually sitting down and figuring the exact difference and budgeting carefully for the future I am going to say yes.  I would absolutely love to be able to take my dog with me.

I would like to be able to take a pet to work, but not a dog. I am not a dog person, but maybe one of my rats. LOL now wouldn't that cause a mass exodus!

Shalom!

Nope.  I did have a dog for 21 years she did go to work with me as I do in home care. But I opted not to have another dog until I retire and can be home with it all the time. I have cats and they do not like being along all the time either but I work graveyard and they come in and sleep while I am gone and during the day I am there with them. When I go to bed they go with me. smile, Judi

It depends on the dog. My current dog, I would probably take to work with me, even if I got a 5% pay cut. He is very well-behaved and well-mannered. He is not likely to do anything that could ever bither me while at work. So with him, yes. Unless I can train or find a dog that well-behaved and such no.

I have two dogs. I truly believe that my chow would rather be home, outdoors, than at work in an office with me. However, if I could bring my shepherd to work with me, it might be worth a pay cut. He's old and arthritic and I feel guilty leaving him outside when I'm gone sometimes for 12 hours or more.

And ryc, you're absolutely right!

I'd take my kitties to work with me in a heartbeat and sacrifice some money for it.  But not 5%.  I'm saving for retirement or I won't have one.
