Featured Grownups - My Definition of Success

The Featured Grownups topic for today is "What is My Definition of Success?"

Most people think of success as achieving a position of wealth or importance or fame. These things are nice, but for me, success is being able to live my live on my own terms so long as I do not hurt others in the process. It comes down to being happy and productive and creative, regardless of what someone else might think.

If I can do that, I can be a useful and productive member of society no matter what my job or salary may be. I will also be a better spouse, parant, and friend.

Success is what you make it...not what someone else thinks of you.

Dear Susan,

Neat to see you participating here in the FG. I haven't posted an entry for Socrates Cafe in a while. I haven't really liked the subjects, but I think I'll throw something together tomorrow. I just saw your name on the FG list and I am trying to get a comment on everyone's site before I go to bed.

I am sure you are a success in everything you do.

Yes you're right. I also think success is in large part a matter of setting clear attainable goals and just pursuing those goals with sincere effort, never letting failure keep you down long enough to the point where you lose perspective and consider YOURSELF a failure, because while you may not in fact achieve the goal you want in the end, you can at least take pride and comfort in knowing that you tried. So to me it's really about having a successful ATTITUDE that matters most.

On your own terms?  I don't think happiness or success come from living on your own terms...

I think it was Thoreau or Emerson that said success is easing the suffering of another.

For myself, I've discovered and reflected on the idea of "excellence".

I agree with TheSocraticClub, success and happiness does not come from living on one's own terms, but I still think one should be allowed to pursue it in whatever manner they choose.

RYC: I have emailed Beth a few times, but we have not contacted each other as often as I had thought we would. But, that is fine, I know she was busy while she was there. We are in a new relationship with one another too. It should not have a huge commitment yet.

I am still waiting for the response you promised on my piece on metaphysics. I would love to hear your thoughts. You said you had to think about it for a while.

Succinct and well-said.

My own "Success" entry will be published Tuesday.  I SHOULD do it today, but I always keep my promises, and I promised the Preamble to the Charter of the Global Greens would be published on Sunday.

Success- where I can be a helpful parent and friend; where I have enough economic stablility to feed those I love.

Ryc: But how are these figures calculated, though? In addition, why does America think it'll take the butchering of 1.2 million Japanese civilians in order to invade the country?

You have to also think about the fact that there were 800,000 civilian casualties in Japan already (after the a-bombs). More information from one of my rants here.

The Vietnam War (and effects immediately after, not counting recently due to starvation and/or health problems continuing to be blamed on "Agent Orange" and the like, as well as vaporized infrastructure) had a death toll of 1.3 million.

Mind if I subscribe?

I believe the government should allow people to pursue happiness and success however that individual sees fit, but I do not believe that every method that a person sincerely chooses will actually result in happiness or success.
