| | IndependenceFeatured_Grownups is asking how I gained independence from something. Gosh, there are so many things I can think of, but one of the earliest is when I gained independence from afternoon soap operas.
I started watching soaps in my teens after school. Soon it was like an addiction. Actually, I only got hooked on one of them and then only once. It was so long ago (maybe 50 years ago) that I don't remember the name of the show. And if the truth be known, I really didn't break out of the habit so much as the show released me.
This was in the early days of soaps, before the writers had fully perfected the art of - what shall I call it - "the hook." I was watching a soap drama that involved a crime. Evidence collection, analysis, arrest, trial, and verdict. It was drawn out for several months, and I would faithfully watch every weekday afternoon, staying with the story.
I had followed the drama from its beginning and was pretty sure I had figured out how the verdict should go for the man put on trial - not guilty. The writers did an excellent job holding me glued to the story, but they didn't develop a good hook to hold me after the jury came back into court with the verdict. Once the verdict was announced, I turned it off and took a solemn high vow to never watch a single episode of any afternoon soap opera ever again so long as I live. So far, I have kept that vow.
I have also avoided watching late evening soaps too. No Dallas for me; no Dynasty either! Never watched a single episode of either show. The single exception I've made was the Babylon 5 series because I like science fiction.
I really hate being so wrapped up in something that I can't turn it off and walk away from it.
Oh yes, the verdict was not guilty.
