The Great Escape

The Kween_of_the_Queens has asked me to plan my Great Escape, not just a vacation, but a no kidding, high-tail it, head for the hills, get away from it all escape. There are, of course, several different reasons one might want to escape, and how one would go about doing it would depend upon the reason. I have chosen here to assume that there are those who might wish to prevent my flight or who would wish to find me after the fact. The reality is quite different, but this is a fantasy, so here it is.

First, I would tell no one of my plans, not even my cat. After all, one can't really escape if everyone you know is fully aware of your plans. The first order of business would be to pay off all my debts so I could leave town not only quietly, but debt free. This has a moral value for me, but it is also a practical matter. If I don't have any debts, no creditors will send any blood hounds out to track me down. Also, paying off my debts will not raise any alarms of the legal variety, so no police agencies will be interested in finding me.

Setting up an account to facilitate electronically moving money around to different banks in Canada, the States, and throughout Europe and the Far East would be a must. This would allow me to "launder" my own money, making it difficult for various agencies to track me down by following the money, while at the same time allowing me access to it. Also, a name change, a new driver's license, and a new credit card account would be in order, along with a new cell phone all in the new name and temporary address. I'd have to establish a temporary address someplace in order to avoid a trace through the old address to the new name. A passport in this new name would be a little tricky, but it's doable.

While making myself debt free, I would have to make sure my current passport was as current and up-to-date as possible. I wouldn't want it to be expiring too soon. A EuroRail pass to allow unlimited train travel in Europe for at least a month would be a must. That way I'd be able to move from country to country and town to town at any hour of the day or night. This would help to hide my tracks if anyone should come looking for me.

With no debts, a current passport, and a Eurorail pass, all of Europe is within my grasp. I would also get visas for any and all European countries that might require them (most currently do not), as well as for Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore, and Hong Kong.

With all of this in place, I would set up some accounts in different countries, and move money to them from my various IRA and 401K accounts, closing them out entirely. Finally, I would have to sell my Condominium and my car and distribute that money in the same way as the IRA and 401s.

Now I'm ready to make several plane reservations to different domestic destinations, each several days apart, so as not to confuse the airline reservatrion system's computers. If possible, I would find someone to actually fly a couple of those flights. I might also make several international reservations, but rather than use them, I would buy a series of bus and train tickets that would take me through several cities in a meandering fashion until I crossed over into Canada. I might even do that on foot. From there, I would catch a ship bound for the European continent, or I might work my way north up the coast to a point where I could hire a boat that could make a more private crossing, i.e., more difficult to trace.

Once there, I'd get on a train and move around a little more before making my way to a quaint little village I know of in the northern part of Norway. It sits at the edge of a fjord, and the surrounding forest is so majestic and the environment so unspoiled it takes your breath away. There, amid the peace and solitude, away from the hectic beat of life here and the demands of family and friends, I would establish myself in a quiet and simple life style that really belongs to another era. If I work all of this right, no one will ever know that I ever left the country.

I'm not sure if I would work or not. I probably would, perhaps as a seamstress, or maybe a grocer, or maybe I would just register guests at a local hotel. Who knows; the possibilities are endless. I might even write a book. I don't know how I would adapt to the colder weather, but I'd find a way. Or I might decide to spend some time in a warmer part of the world during the colder months in Norway. If I decide not to be too cruel, I would find someone to repost a letter from me, from Japan or someplace else, to those who might be worried to let them know I'm alive and telling them of my decision to disappear.

I know that there are a few logical holes in this scenario, but they can be ironed out. And besides, ya wouldn't want me to be giv'n away all of me secrets, now would ya. Anyway, I have to end this narritive somewhere. The really interesting part of all this is that I am already debt free and able to go any time I choose. So who knows, my next blog entry may come to you from Christchurch, New Zealand.

On your way to Norway, drop in and say hi.

(I wouldn't close any current credit card accounts. it is too abrupt and the banks will fight you anyway. Just let bill/statements collect for the new owner of your condo until they demand the postman stop delivering them. Nothing too unusual about that.)
