Hummm. I Wonder ...

As we all know, we pay our elected representatives to go to Washington, D.C. to work. By work I mean that we pay them to look at existing legislation to decide if it is effective and fix it if it is not. We also elect them to originate new legislation that will benefit us in some way or another. Etc.

How is it then that each year we tolerate some percent of our elected representatives taking months and more months off of work -- with pay -- so that they can campaign to be reelected to an office that will pay them to take more time off work so that they can campaign to be reelected again.

Seriously, look at Hillary Clinton. She hasn't been in Washington since she started her campaign for the presidency. She's being paid, but she's not doing the job she was elected to do. Barack Obama the same thing. Ron Paul, the same.

Why should we be paying these people to campaign? If they want to run for the presidency, let them resign their current positions so we can send others to Washington that will work the job, rather than chase the next highest position.

I hadn't thought of that, but you're right. There's definitely a conflict there. I mean, certainly, campaigning is difficult, but I think that one of the main things keeping Congressmen and Senators running -- rather than local state officials -- is the fact that Congressmen and Senators don't have to worry about being out of a job when they're done.

I've often thought the same. Very frustrating. But it just goes to show that politicians, regardless of who they are, are ultimately in the game mostly to seek power for themselves. if they have ideals and passions, those become submerged with their time in office and their pursuit of more and higher office.

Well, that's easy. We shouldn't pay them. Consider the Romans... they never paid their politicians, and we shouldn't either. A life in politics should be equivalent to a public service/charitable position. At most, politicians should make minimum wage.

On another note, if politicians only made minimum wage, who wants to make bets on how fast it would go up?

BTW, I wasn't bashing Christians in my Socrates_Cafe post. I was just using them as an example (over Islam or Buddhism) because in America, Christians are the ones with the most power.
