Backing Into A Parking Place

A few days ago, I overheard two people talking about SUV and truck owners. One was saying that if they would get something smaller to drive, they could park like regular people instead of having to back into parking spaces. I do not have a big vehicle, and I always back into parking spaces, because I have discovered that backing into the space is, overall, safer than pulling straight into the same space.

Think about it. You have to backup. You either backup when you pull into the parking space, or you backup when you leave the parking space. Either way, you backup.

When you back out of a parking space, you have to be very careful, because you cannot see as well as you can when you are going forward. There could be someone walking behind you, or a driver could be impatient and simply drive past you when you are backing out.

When you back into a parking space, you still have to be careful about anyone who may be walking behind you, but the likelihood of that happening is less than if you are backing out of a spot, because given a choice of walking behind you and possibly getting trapped between you and another car or walking toward the front of your car, most people will instinctively walk toward the front of your car because it is moving away from them. Also, it is almost impossible for an impatient driver to try to squeeze by you as you are backing into a parking space. There simply isn't enough room for them to do that, so the possibility of that causing an accident is practically nil. And when you leave the parking space, your field of vision is much greater than it is when backing out of the spot, reducing the possibility that you may not see either a person or another car.

Taken together, I believe that the possibility of having an accident or causing personal injury is significantly reduced by backing into a parking space, regardless of what kind of vehicle you may be driving. So, since you have to backup in either case, you might as well do the safest thing.

I am of the opinion that if the general public started to back into all parking spaces, the collision shops of America would be flooded with work.

I'm only dangerous in reverse. I'm better backing out than backing in.

I back into spots. Then to leave I back out of them.

I lived on the Texas coastline for fifteen years, and learned to drive on the old back roads by the harbor, around the chemical plants and oil refineries. Everyone backs into parking places, regardless of vehicle size. It is required by law in the plants, because it facilitates evacuations in the event of an explosion, chemical release, or other emergency.

@EyeHatePeas: -  I guess I have more faith in most drivers, especially since the same skill set is required to backup either way.

I would disagree. Assuming cars on 3 sides of you - backing in means having to judge distances on 2 sides and behind you. Backing out means the side distances are pretty much set and just have to be maintained to avoid a "hit." The greatest danger of accident is how far and how fast you go back. I think backing in is much more demanding than backing out.

But pull out is certainly much safer.

Then again I am assuming the very narrow parking spaces I see in Europe and not the cavernous (in comparison) parking spaces available in the good ol' US of A.

I'm living in Germany at present, where parking is a whole other animal. However, the tiny parking spots make backing into parking spots much easier. No matter how you slice it, you'll be unable to open your door all the way when you're done parking. No way around it. So it makes parking simple: You look into your left side view mirror, you get as close as possible to the car to your driver's side, and you're flush in that parking spot. Backing in becomes foolproof.

Then again, I'm in the military. Combat parking is mandatory, as it allows you to egress from your parking spot with maximum expediency.
