| | Cell PhoneSomething sent my cell phone to the great beyond yesterday. It was working fine when I went to bed. I plugged it in to recharge overnight, and when I woke up the next morning, it would not power up. It would get about half way through the powerup cycle and quit. It would repeat the attempt about a minute later. And a minute after that. I didn't count the total number of attempts it cycled before giving up.
Naturally I tried removing the battery, as well as looking around for a hard reset. No luck. Then I took it into the service guys, who didn't have any better luck. They don't know how, but they think one of the critical circuits was fried while charging. I don't know how that would happen, since the phone was plugged into a UPS box, rather that the wall outlet. That should have protected it, unless the socket used was not protected. In that case, I suppose it would be possible for a sudden surge to get the job done.
Anyway, I had to go out and buy a new phone. This time I went with a Blackberry. First one I've owned. I spent the better part of an afternoon and, an evening, and last night reviewing the user guide and seeing what I've got. It will be a while before I've got it configured the way I want it.
The sad part is that since we can't get the old phone to power up, there's no way to recover my contact list. That phone did not use a removable SIM card, and it wouldn't sync with Outlook on my PC. I will go back to an older phone to get a jump start on my contacts. I think I'll be able to get most of my contacts from that phone, losing only a few from the past 18 months.
