The New Phone - Update

I forgot to mention in yesterday's post that the particular Blackberry I bought was The Pink Pearl. It's a very attractive phone, and not to difficult to set up with it's basic functions; but I am thinking about returning it for another model.

I've had two problems so far. The first is that it doesn't have a full keyboard. That means that multiple characters - three to be exact - are on each key. I might get used to the multiple clicks to type the character I want, but the size of the phone is reduced by stacking multiple characters on each key, making the key identification difficult at best - especially since they are multi-colored. I didn't think that would be a problem, since I don't text. I also didn't think that I would be sending email on the thing, but once I got my email push up and running, the first thing I tried to do was send a reply. It took forever because of the way the key character stack works.

Still, I might get used to the multiple key clicks if I could just turn off the "smart type-ahead" feature that tries to anticipate what word I want to type. Rather than helping me, it actually gets in my way. There is an instruction that's supposed to show me how to turn it off, but it doesn't work, even when followed to the letter. Maybe I'll take it back to the place I bought it and get them to turn it off. At least that would let me try the thing without that annoying feature.

I was able to have my contact list moved successfully from an older phone, and it appears on first glance that I haven't lost too much in the way of contacts. So far I've had to load only three of my old contact list by hand. There may be a few more, but I don't think it will be many.

Anyway, if the key thing can't be straightened out, I might have to turn this thing in for an 8830 or one of the other models with a full keyboard. I might even look at the Motorola Q9. It's a Windows based thing that also offers push email capability. I really don't have that much need for that capability now that I'm retired, but it is cool and convenient.

Anyone have any suggestions for me?

My Sony-Ericsson phone has a "type ahead" feature. It is a bit odd but I soon mastered it and I find that 85%+ it anticipates correctly. It also seems to learn and any word I "spell" is added to the dictionary.

Hope you find the right mix of features and then enjoy the new phone.

There should be software for your PC to let you connect the phone. You should be able to do a lot of the phone entries, schedules, tasks, and such from the computer. I do almost all my phone number entering via PC. I could email and text from mine, but I have all that stuff disabled on my account to prevent it.

if you want full QWERTY, the blackberry curve and the samsung blackjack II are both nice.
the shared keys was the big turnoff for the pearl for me too, but as EyeHatePeas said, once you get used to type ahead, it generally works pretty well.
