On Wal-Mart

Yesterday I went to Wal-Mart because I needed to get my oil changed.  When I arrived, they told me it would be about an hour, and I thought cool: I can easily kill an hour in Wal-Mart.  I mean I needed to get new sandals since mine broke about two weeks ago, and I wanted to get some new sunglasses.  Well two and half hours later, I walked out with some sandals that although cheap I'm not sure that I like, sunglasses that are alright, a Clint Eastwood triple feature with Every Which Way But Loose, Any Which Way You Can, and Honky Tonk Man, and a dvd copy of Stand By Me.  Thanks to this experience, I remember why I hated Wal-Mart.

Spending over two hours at a Wal-Mart by yourself is not a pleasant experience.  I practically had the store memorized by the time I was done.  I know where almost everything is located now, and I discovered that their not always that cheap.  In fact, Target was a dollar cheaper on several items such as the new Indiana Jones toys.  However, Wal-Mart wins the suits battle because they actually carry short sizes; something Target desperately needs to start doing.  (Or I need to grow about two inches.)

Luckily, Louisa called while I was walking around.  She was complaining about people in her life growing up again, but it was still nice to talk to her.  However, she confuses me like a Dickens novel.  (Actually, I've not read a Dickens in quite some time, so I'm not sure how confusing it might be.  Just work with me here.)

My wanderings in the store began in the electronics department.  It truly irks me that they place most of their DVDs in locked cases.  As much as I like their prices, it stops me from making spur of the moment purchases.  (Which in reality is a good thing.)  I am not going to take the time to ask for help to get a dvd that I just kind of want.  If I had not needed help, I probably would have walked away yesterday with season 1 of Two and a Half Men

Then I found shoes and looked at the sandals.  Luckily, they had two kinds of the style I wanted.  Unfortunately, they only had my size in one of them: the one I preferred less.  Damn.  Then I walked to clothes and made the suit discovery.

From there, I walked the rest of the perimeter of the store until I reached toys.  I love the toy aisles.  Now, they had a decent lego section, and I was surprised by some of the action figures.  (Why would Wal-Mart carry toys based on slightly obscure indie comics?)  However, the board game section was pitiful.  I don't even think they had some "classic" games.  I was even more disappointed than I am by other big retailers.  Very sad.

One of my most interesting observations about Wal-Mart from yesterday was how great of a cultural melting pot it is.  I saw people of various ethnic groups walking around, and I swear there were accents that I did not recognize.  Wal-Mart may be the great equalizer in this country now of days.  From Indian to Hispanic, from European to Asian, everyone shops on Wal-Mart.

I, on the other hand, still dislike the place because of how damn long it took.  I mean seriously.  They told me an hour, but I don't think they even started on my car until I had been there for over an hour and a half to two hours.  Next time I need an oil change, I am going elsewhere.

Updates and Stuff Like Solitare

Hello again.  It has been a while, but I feel it is time to write some more.  An attempt to catch people up on recent events in my life.

Last night, I finally went to a pub quiz again.  This time I went to the one at Bridgeport.  I managed to get a team of four people: Joe, Alex, Jason, and myself.  Amazingly, we placed second!  It was pretty awesome.  We were in fifth place going into the final round.  By finishing second, we each got like $20 that covered our bar tabs basically, but then we went to Kells for a round of celebratory car bombs.  Those are never a good idea.  There was some more beer there.  Afterwards we went back to campus to watch Airheads.  We were going to watch Booty Call for some reason, but Blockbuster didn't have it.

While inebriated last night, I drunk dialed someone.  Apparently, I confessed my love to her.  Not that I feel that strongly, but I do like her a lot.  The biggest problem with this situation is that she knows exactly how I feel, but I really have no idea how she feels.  Highly annoying.  I'm trying to play it cool, but that isn't going so well.  I keep getting mixed signals, but we'll find out in time.

As you can guess, I've also been playing board games fairly recently.  Last week, we played Shogun on Monday night.  It was the first time we played that game, and I really like it.  It is sort of like RISK, but it has more going on in the game.  On Tuesday, we played Ming Dynasty, and I'm not sure on that one.  I need to play it with more people.  Then on Thursday, I finally got another game of Power Grid to happen.  That is one of my favorite games.  I also bought two new games: Acquire and Thurn and Taxis.  I hope to play them soon.  On Sunday, I played four games of Hey Thats My Fish, a game of Bang!, and Metro.  Hey Thats My Fish is growing on me.  It is simple silly fun, and I like Metro.  It is better with fewer players I have discovered.

I've also been working the desk a lot lately.  I worked the desk every day last week except for one, and then I worked all weekend as well.  This week has not gone much better.  I did not work today though!  However, I am on call tonight.  C'est la vie I guess.

For some odd reason, I've been play lots of solitare lately.  Your guess is as good as mine, but it is about all I have been up to lately in my free time.

I don't know what else to say actually.
