User Friendly, a computer geek / tech support comic strip has had its humorous ups and downs over the years I've been reading it, but the one thing that has always impressed me about this strip is that Illiad, the writer, is not afraid to take time away from the laughs or any story arc he's currently running to be serious about some things that should be seriously mentioned, that we might not forget them. For several years after 9/11. I would take my moment of silence after reading User Friendly, for he took the time to make mention of it years after any other cartoonist had moved on to more topical events.

Ally's recent trip out to San Fransisco was an absolute blast, fun to meet her mother, watch Lights Out and get lostish in SF, but through discussions with her and a short film that was shown at the film festival, I've made a decision.
I'm going to write a little blog entry on my grandfather and his experiences in World War II. He served in the French army and I'm very proud of that, but I've realized that very few of my nearest and dearest seem to be aware of those exploits. I know I'm a little late for Veteran's Day, but I'm sure that you'll all forgive me.

So there, thats something to look forward to I suppose.

De-Framing

I am, and I say this without shame, as close to being a card carrying picture fiend as one can be, considering that we don't carry cards, we do carry flash drives, memory cards, cameras and the complete and total willingness to take pictures of just about anything as long as it holds friendship or beauty. We do spend a good hour or two using all available power outlets in the family room to plug in a veritable multitude of laptops and external hard drives, and gather together all pictures. This is called the "Nerdery" and its sole purpose is because we picture fiends, to borrow a phrase from popular yesteryear culture, "gotta catch em all".
After which, we all board our respective flights, sleepwalk our way through our layovers and finally, once we have reached the safety of our own homes, begin the great culling process which will leave us with only our most treasured memories captured in millions of pixels. For some of us this involves hours staring at photoshop's levels, to others it just means a simple crop here and there, this process may or may not include a soundtrack of stringed melancholy and acoustic... um, how does one describe the mood of Jack Johnson's music anyway? Anyway...
For all of us it will end with a picture frame.

Picture framing, now thats a topic that surprisingly enough, has not managed to garner a sizable xanga post, just several times a year, one or two lines, "Today, I'm finding the perfect frames for some pictures" or "Today I framed pictures". Really though, do we need lengthy treaties upon the subject? Here is the truth and the core of picture framing. In framing a picture, you are making a decision to take something that is of value to you and place it into your daily life. Where do framed pictures go? On dressers, walls and desks, on your bookshelves, the places where you will see that image every single day. A framed picture is a memory you wish to make last and share with those around you.

So what then, when you are sitting in your room, reorganizing and you realize, without remorse, that it is time for you to take that picture down off the wall and set aside?
Its not about the passing of time, for if you look on my wall you'll see that I still have hanging there a picture of me and Nate posing outside The Local, Its somewhat iconic I suppose. Its the only flint picture I still have on my walls, besides a picture from Micah, but thats art, thats different in a different sort of way. Its the evidence of ending eras I suppose, we are not static creations, we change, the way we see the world, the way we are linked to our friends is ever changing, to deny such things is to set yourself up for a major disapointment. Friends drift away, meet new people, meet each other, get married, have kids, move away, move closer (hey, I can dream, can't I?) and with each change, change continues. Never fear, the world in those pictures is no less real than it was a year or two ago, in the same way that a the beach is still the beach, no matter how many times the tides come in and out, ever shifting its sands, but just perhaps, we no longer need to preserve those moments as we once did.

Well, shortly after I posted about scarves, it started raining. It hasn't really stopped yet either. One thing I definitely love about my room is the fact that it really is just a converted car port, which means for listening to the rain pound upon the roof, its an excellent place to just hang out and enjoy the weather. I've said it before, and I'll probably say it a million times more: I love the rain.

But I haven't been out in it too much. I've been trapped inside, locked away with the computer, trying to nurse it back to health. It seems a few days ago it was "hijacked" (think virus, only with bigger guns) and its been a bear trying to hunt down and delete all the fragments and programs its been spawning all over the computers hard drive. Not fun. So if anyone was wondering why there was no promised update on betterwithoutsleep, or perhaps sent me an email and didn't get the reply they were expecting, look no further than a couple punks in russia who decided it would be fun to design things that infect and break computers.

And in other news, Who fever, which had seemed to be quieting down, has be reinvigorated by the news of David Tennants departure from the Who-verse, of this I am both saddened because I've really enjoyed the bouncy, shadowy fun he's brought to the role, and looking forward to with interest, because I did fear that his manic style would eventually grow old. Question: Is it sexism to dislike the idea that they might cast Doctor Who as a woman? And have I asked that question before, it seems oddly familar... Oh well.
