Harvest starts...today! I got enough green onions and radishes out of our garden this morning to grace our salad tonite. I'll get a little parsley and marjoram to put in the lemon and olive oil vinagrette. This is gonna be good! After I clean the produce, I take the trimmings out to my compost pile to make dirt...nothing goes to waste here. The back climbing roses started their show too. We had winds of 55 mph yesterday but I am happy to report that my new system to tie up the climbers performed perfectly. I didn't lose one cane of my beauties to the wind, praise God! Enjoy the rest of the weekend, I know I will....
This video shows a deer being shot...be advised and do not watch it if this kind of stuff upsets you. For the rest of you folks, my brother is in Alaska putting up a Sam's Club. One of his contractors sent him this (I don't know if he knows the guy or not...). This is totally amazing, talk about a good shot! He anchors a deer at 950 yards. Just the way they are yakking with eachother, you can tell it is far away (the deer would run if he heard them and they obviously knew he wouldn't). But wait for the zoom out after the shot...it shows how really far away the shot was. I doubt I would have even spotted the deer.....
Had storms Wednesday and Thursday, day and night. I don't know which I like better. There is nothing that beats a rolling thunderstorm for sleeping. And the lightening show is definitely more impressive at night or early morning. For those of you who do not know bird behavior, here is a bit of natural science info that you may find interesting .....if the storm is to last awhile (not severe), birds don't take shelter. If it is a blow thru storm that won't stick around or will be particularly viscous, the birds go in. Now, don't ask me how they can tell the difference; all I know is, they are a lot more accurate than my weatherman....
I love birds. They are so beautiful and gloriously happy with their enchanting songs and active lives! The orioles have returned, another of my favorites. Their song rivals the woodthrush and I happened to capture it on my first bird video. It is next to impossible to film orioles because of their size and because they flit around like they are on crack. You will probably recognize a couple of clips in this video, but there is new stuff too. I filmed the kingbird that has returned to nest in our sycamore (like it does every year). They are a cantankerous bird and dive bomb me when I mow my yard. I am already working on another bird video...got clearer shots of the chipping sparrow (about 50 of them were feeding on the wet lawn this morning). They are such a tiny and nervous bird, that it challenges you to get them on video with any clarity, but I managed! I also got a houseful of purple martins! Their song and chatter was otherworldly and I sure hope I got it on the video (I guess I never heard them before...weird, trust me). I am determined to snag the oriole and am hunting the housewren I saw yesterday. Comes mid-summer, the mississippi kites will return and that bird will take your breath away if I can film one hunting. What is your favorite bird?
note: this is less shaky if you look at it directly on you tube...have no idea why xanga makes it worse....
Last nite, we had lovely, rumbling thundershowers...the perfect kind that make everything grow an inch overnite. I have iris (old fashioned name: flags) that are over one hundred years old, they came from my grandmother's gardens. The flash of the camera bounced off of the droplets of rain on them. I like them because they are the deepest, almost black shade of purple I have ever seen. The pincushion flower is another old fashioned flower and you can't kill it with a blow torch (but it will die if you water it too much). And my zuchini that popped up just got their secondary leaves...my mouth is watering already. Doran says I'm getting too tough, he cracks me up. But all the heavy lifting at the greenhouse does give you a set of guns, I must say....
