Tragedy defined.

A couple 'took an early retirement from their jobs the Northeast five years ago when he was 59 and she was 51. Now they live in Punta Gorda, Florida, where they cruise on their 30-foot trawler, play softball and collect shells...' picture them before Christ at the great day of judgment: 'Look, Lord. See my shells.'

What has been gearing my decisions over the past few months? I hope and pray that it is so when I am 59 I will be in some OR somewhere fighting for 20 hours with my head and my hands. And no matter what happens my lips will speak the gospel to the struggling family.

I received some years ago orders from my Master to stand at the foot of the cross until he came. He has not come yet, but I mean to stand there till he does. Here, then, I stand at the foot of the cross and tell out the old, old story, stale though it sound to itching ears, and worn threadbare as critics may deem it. It is of Christ I love to speak, of Christ who loved, and lived, and died, the substitute for sinners, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God.

Best days of my life

Haven't been running or in the ER for quite a while but for some reason I'm livin' the best days of my life.

The book I'm reading I haven't read for 7 years even though it was one of the books that lead me to pursue medicine. I realized last night while reading that even though so many things have changed in my life over 7 years, this one thing has never changed.

But what has changed for the better is this:
Every time something unusual happens in the ER or every time I watch someone die, there's a piece of me that is torn out and left behind. And I leave a trail of that. Yet as you know, muscle can only grow stronger and more robust if it is torn. When it's not being torn it becomes flaccid and useless. Now I've grown to love those times when I'm torn because it makes me helpless...but I also know it will ultimately be for my good.
