| Just 14 more days until I'm back in Toronto. I can't wait!!
Tomorrow is the last day of classes and the beginning of exams. I
am going to DIE!!! I have 4 exams: two on the 14th, one on the 20th and
one on the 22nd. The last 4 months was basically a super condensed version of my
last 3 years of undergrad and I have to somehow find a way to cram it
all in over the next 2 weeks. Just shoot me now!!
Just yesterday, the 2nd year class sang a remake of the song,
"The Twelve days of Christmas" for us 1st years. It pretty much sums up my last 4 months here in Vancity:
The Twelve Days of Christmas
On the first day of classes,
Med/Dent gave to me:
An ego and a buddy.
2 Bags of Bones
3 thousand handouts
400 web evaluations
5 Golden Pucks
6 Million emails
7 Smelly Lab partners
8 Hours of DPAS (Doctor Patient and society)
9 Hundred cytokines
10 Coloured Pencils
11 Required textbooks
On the 12th day of classes,
Med/Dent TOOK from me:
14 thousand dollars,
Any Dental relevance,
All friends and family,
Fear of the 2nd years on ice,
8 hours a night,
some faith in healthcare,
Any personal hygeine,
20/20 vision,
4 weeks of summer,
3 meals a day,
time to shop for Christmas,
And my last sense of sanity.
Back to studying!!

| I can't believe how fast time is flying by. It feels like just
yesterday that I updated. So much has happened: one midterm exam, my
birthday, women's night, and Halloween! Yes, we did have one
midterm and we do have to study from time to time. Although it
seems like it's all fun and games here, it's not!
Our first midterm took place two weeks ago and was a one hour exam
with 56 multiple choice questions covering pretty much everything since
day one. It was pretty heavy in terms of volume even
for just 5 weeks of material. I'm definitely not looking forward
to December exams which is cumulative! What's even more scary was that
the class average for the midterm was in the 80s. That's just
ridiculous. The exam wasn't that easy or at least I didn't think
so. I guess our class not only parties hard, but studies hard
too!
Okay, on to more interesting things. My 23rd birthday was
absolutely awesome. It was so great celebrating it with my friends, new
and old. We went to Shabusen, an all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ and
Japanese Sushi and Sashimi. It was so good. I was
impressed. I, however, wasn't all too impressed about the 5 shots
my friends made me shoot back-to-back. Thanks guys!

Women in Medicine Night:
Ohh dear, where do I start? Every year the 2nd year class
organizes an event for all the 1st year ladies to come together to hear
from guest speakers about the rewards and challenges of being a woman
in medicine. What the ladies didn't know was that this event was
all just a prank. Midway through the event while all the women
were socializing, drinking their wine and eating their cheese, the 2nd
year guys came rushing in dressed in scrubs and a semi-striptease
breaks out:

Then, shortly after, when you think things couldn't get anymore disturbing comes this:
Ohh gosh. Yes, that's a whole bunch of us 1st year guys
dressed in
drag crashing the party. And yes, that's me on the left in a silver
sequence dress with sagging boobs. What can I say, gravity has
been particulary cruel to me! Let me make one thing clear: this was
only possible after several hours
of predrinking and a lot of convincing/peer pressure from the 2nd
years. As disturbing as it sounds, it was so much fun (except for
being called sexy or pretty! That's just wrong).
Halloween: Since the start of
school all the upper years have been saying that the annual Halloween
party put on by the MED2 class is the biggest and best party of the
year and it is not to be missed. And were they RIGHT! It was
definitely the hugest and most ridiculously crazy Halloween party I've
ever been to in my life. People went all out with their costumes
and people were just so creative. From Harajuku girls to Sponge
Bob, you name they had it. Plus, there's something about costume
parties and people losing all inhibition and discretion. It was
just insane! To make up for my
traumatizing experience the week before dressing up as a woman, I made
up for it this time by being SUPERMAN!
Where else would you find: "India" Jones, Osama, GI Joe and Superman all under one roof:
Of course, you can't have a Halloween party without Napoleon Dynamite there:
Wow. That was a long update. I must now get back to the joy of anatomy
and physiology and all that other stuff. I miss TORONTO! Can't
wait until Christmas!
*One last thing: I have a new website where
I'll be posting tonnes of pictures (Thanks Calvin, what an awesome
birthday present!) Check it out when you're bored. Many more
embarassing pictures. hahaha!! Freaking hilarious!

| AHHH!! My first med school exam is coming up on the 13th so I thought
I'd better take this time to update before I will be busy putting my
nose to the books! Everyone is starting to study ridculously hard
and its scaring me especially considering I only took my anatomy
textbook out of the shrink-wrap 2 days ago! hahaha. I'm
pulling an Alex Louie here in UBC! haha.
Anyway, things have been going very well the past two weeks. Been
partying and getting to know my fellow classmates even better.
Last week I went to Caprice Nightclub with a bunch of meds people and
Kevin Quan from Toronto. This time I drank more than I nomally do
which was about 3 beers instead of the regular 2. BAD IDEA!! hahaha.. I got
really tired and was falling asleep. This time, however, I GOT KICKED
OUT!! My first time ever. Totally sucked because the night was still young. Stupid clubs in
Vancouver. I usually get a warning but not this time. The guy threw me
out of the club. It was even funnier when a bunch of the med
peeps were with me outside trying to talk the bouncer into letting me
back into the club. My friend Andrew even went so far as to drop the
M-BOMB! hahahaha... Note to all you med students/dental students/chiropractic students etc out there: The M-BOMB
(stating that you are a med student) does work when picking up ladies,
getting out of a speeding ticket or budding in line for Starbucks
coffee, but it doesn't work when trying to get back into a club after getting kicked out!! hahaha. so sad!
But don't worry guys. I'm not a complete disappointment out here in
Vancouver. To all my friends back home who have entrusted in me the task of
finding the one and only Kristen Kreuk you will be pleased to hear that
I'm getting very close. Just a few weeks ago I was looking through my
friend's yearbooks when all of a sudden there she was right before my
eys:

Okay, so I havn't met her or shaken her hand yet but I do know which
highschool she went to and what she wrote in her graduation
blurb. I feel like I already know her! All I have to do is find a couple of her friends and
they'll lead me right to her! I will find her!!
So here are some pics from the last couple of weeks:
Enjoying a hotpot dinner: (L-R: Wratha, Chris, Angela, Amanda, Jao,
Mark's girlfriend, Mark, Andrew, and Albert) Although my girlfriend
couldn't join us she was still there in the form of a wallet sized
picture!

Lunch at the Life Sciences Center (where all of my classes are). L-R: Amyeen, Angela, Albert, Andrew, Allison, Farhad.

| Sorry guys, this update is long overdue. So what have I been up
to lately? Let's just say that Med school has
been more about partying than about studying! In the two weeks that
I've been here I've managed to sleep no more than 4 hrs a night.
Its been crazy but ridiculously awesome!!!
Orientation started 2 weeks ago and was tons of fun. The faculty
and upper year students really put in a lot of effort in
welcoming us. Although we had to wake up 7am every morning,
it was well worth it. There were some boring parts like
"professionalism" lectures and "roadmap to the curriculum," but for the
most part they were pretty good. One of the workshops was this
anti-harassment thing where we all split up into small groups and all
of a sudden this actor enters our room dressed like a doctor and begins
lecturing to us. But while he's lecturing he makes all these rude
racial comments all the while we're thinking this is all real. It was
pretty clear by the end of it that we didn't have the balls to stand up
to the doctor even though all of us were offended by his
comments. Besides the workshop we had a wine and cheese mixer, a
scavenger hunt, a bbq, and a surprise event at a bar full of 40 year
old cougars!!
The highlight of orientation week was definitely CAMP ARTABAN.
Every year for long weekend the 1st years go on a trip to Gambier
Island which happens to be like 10 mins from Ike's hometown of
Gibsons!! hahaha. Everything was included: a ferry ride to the island,
food, accomadations and activties. We went canoeing, rocking
climbing and did all these team building activites. When the sun
went down was when things went crazy. Keg parties and roasting
marshmallows (at the same time). it was so much fun. According to med
students our year already has the reputation of being full of crazy fun
partiers.
This past week the 2nd years organized a pubcrawl for the 1st years.
For $25 we had what seemed like an endless supply of alcohol and a
healthy amount of public humilation. Drinking started at 6pm and lasted
to 2am in the morning. Surprisingly, I made it to all four clubs
without falling asleep and losing my devil costume. Yes you heard
me, a devil costume. I was forced to dress up with horns on my head, a
red tail on my butt and a pitch fork in my hand while others had to
dress up like Girls Gone Wild or Superheros We all had to wear a
white shirt and by the end of the night many rude and perverse comments
were written onto it like "I'm horny" "$1 BJs" and "Free mammograms"
(whatever that means). I even had a lipstick kiss on my shirt which I
think a guy gave me but I can't remember. At each bar/club there
were certain games (most of which required drinking) that we had to
complete as a team. One of the games was to make the longest clothes
line possible and sure enough when you play this game with some of the
most competitive type A personalities in Canada there will be some
willing to go further than others. If you want to see men and women in
their undies go to UBC Med.
Overall, orientation and the 1st week of classes have been
gggrreeeaaattt!!! Things are now settling down and we've already begun
doing anatomy dissections (on the first day of classes). they don't
waste time here!! We also begin seeing out first patients a few nexts from now. Time to get serious.
Tomorrow I will try and post some pictures.
I thought I'd leave you with the views I get from my apartment at
Marine Drive on UBC campus (Point Grey). And NO...contrary to what
people say, I can not see the nude beach from my window. THANK
GOODNESS!!! This is what I see on most nights when the skies are
clear:

JEALOUS???? You gotta love the West Coast. Btw...these
pictures were taken from a CANON DIGITAL REBEL XT....these are for you
mike.
also, below is the front of my shirt after pubcrawl. I wont even show
you what's on the front for fear that I may offend some people.
hahaha.

| Its been over a week since I've relocated to Vancouver and so far I have no complaints whatsoever! The weather has been amazing with sunny skies and warm temperatures just about everyday. For the past week I've been doing some pretty touristy things like going to Whistler, Granville Island, Robson St, etc.
Today I tackled the Grouse Grind with Derrick, Shao and Tawny. Ohh my goodness!! I am not attempting it ever again. It's a 3 km trail up Grouse Mountain. It's crazy. Although I finished with a respectable time of 1 hr 6 mins, it felt like forever and I almost died 100 times. I really should have read the warning signs before starting. I didn't meet any of the requirements such as drinking 1L of water before beginning, carrying a bottle of water, wearing proper attire and most importantly, being in good physical condition. Its a miracle i survived. The fastest time posted for the day was 31 mins. That's insane.
Must now go and recover from near exhaustion!! | | |
