ROUTINE
Most of us love to have our little routines. It's kind of enjoyable and in a way, reassuring, that all is well in our tiny corner of the world. What about when routine does not produce enjoyment? When we find ourselves just "going through the motions" of life, it's time to step out of our rut. My kids can tell you, I have often said, "If something is wrong in your life and you don't know joy, you must change your life". I need to practice what I preach. Sometimes, marching to that familiar beat can lead us down a path where we have an unplugged heart. Besides, it can also make us just too self serving. Can we get too old or too busy to have passion, excitement or interesting goals in our lives? I don't believe it!! Nope.
In the account by Luke of when Jesus visited the house of Martha and Mary (Luke 10:38-42), you can see that Martha was very much in her hospitality routine. As a matter of fact, she was none too happy with Mary for sitting to listen at the feet of Jesus rather than helping her serve, cook and clean. Martha even complained to Jesus, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me." Jesus answered and said to her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her". It could not be that Jesus was rebuking Martha because of the work she had done, for faith without works is dead (James 2:17). Perhaps Jesus wanted her to understand and value her personal relationship with Him more than she valued her comfortable "routine" of hospitality.
These scriptures and thoughts that I am reviewing for a Bible study tomorrow have really stirred my own opinion of routines and choices. Is there nothing new that God can say to me? Of course there is. Have I landed where I need to be spiritually? Not even close.
God is not about stagnant, routine lifestyles. Isaiah 42:9 declares, "Behold, the former things have come to pass, and new things I declare; Before they spring forth I tell you of them." I'm ready, willing and able to listen and step forth for God. Yes, that is where the passion, the excitement and the growth lies.
