| Metal, Indie, and more.RECENT REVIEWS 10/25/06 - A few more for your reading pleasure today. Gojira come from France and play some really interesting and HEAVY tunes. They get a bit repetitive and I could live without a few of the tracks, so that explains the 4. Switchblade play a really, really boring version of doom. Its two songs that just drone on endlessly without making much of an impact at all. GOJIRA - From Mars to Sirius (4/5 - Prosthetic) SWITCHBLADE - Switchblade III (1/5 - Cyclop Media) 10/17/06 - Told you I submitted a bunch of shit. First off, two great releases from Century Media. Napalm Death haven't slowed up a bit since the excellent The Code is Red... and is actually slightly better. Into Eternity an excellent metal album that combines death, thrash, power, prog, traditional... EVERYTHING into a great sound they can call their own. Heaven Shall Burn play metalcore well, but they don't do it well enough for a 5. Iconoclasm play death/black metal that is somewhat effective, but they certainly aren't the genre's forerunners. Panchrysia keep things more on the black side of things and sound very typical of the genre. Red Animal War have been around a long time, and I really hoped they could put it all together and release something great, but it's just another lackluster mid-90's style emo record. NAPALM DEATH - Smear Campaign (5/5 - Century Media) INTO ETERNITY - The Scattering of Ashes (5/5 - Century Media) HEAVEN SHALL BURN - Deaf to Our Prayers (4/5 - Century Media) ICONOCLASM - The Ultimate Crescendo of Hell (split w/ Panchrysia) (3/5 - Shiver) PANCHRYSIA - The Ultimate Crescendo of Hell (split w/ Iconoclasm) (2/5 - Shiver) RED ANIMAL WAR - Seven Year War (2/5 - End Sounds) 10/13/06 - I've submitted a ton of reviews the last few days, but none have been posted. Here are two to tide you over for a little while. Frog Eyes play quirky indie rock similar to Wolf Parade and arguably helped open the door for their quirky Canadian brothers. Live From Dakota is a double-live album from the Brittish rock band Stereophonics. FROG EYES - The Bloody Hand/The Golden River (Re-issues) (4/5 - Absolutely Kosher) STEREOPHONICS - Live from Dakota (3/5 - Vox Populi) 10/04/06 - Behold... The Arctopus! Holy shit. Awesome progressive/technical metal. This is a re-issue with both their EPs and a live set included. All Shall Perish play deathcore and play it decently. This is MUCH better than their first album. The Purrs mix a bunch of different pop-rock styles and it sounds ok, but not that impressive. The Cairo Gang is just one dude that messes around recording stuff at his house. It's decent, but there are a lot of throw away tracks and other annoyances. BEHOLD... THE ARCTOPUS - Nano-Nucleic Cyborg Summoning - (5/5 - Metal Blade/BMA) ALL SHALL PERISH - The Price of Existence - (4/5 - Nuclear Blast) THE PURRS - The Purrs (3/5 - Sarathan) THE CAIRO GANG - The Cairo Gang (2/5 - Narnack) 09/26/06 - Veil of Maya plays a semi-technical version of metalcore with vocals that are very similar to From a Second Story Window's. Exitium play grindcore that leans to the death/thrash side of things a la Kill the Client, but much less interesting. If I Had Eyes plays slightly below average metalcore in the brutal New England style. VEIL OF MAYA - All Things Set Aside (3/5 - Corrosive) EXITIUM - Outsourcing Morality (3/5 - Deepsend) IF I HAD EYES - If I Had Eyes (2/5 - Self-Released) 09/20/06 - Sublime's self-titled album is a 90's alternative classic. When it came out while I was in middle school, I was all over it and today it's still just as good. Anyway, the deluxe edition has the CD the way it was meant to be released by Brad Nowell before he died (opens with a Bob Marley cover, "Garden Grove" is the last track instead of the first, "Summertime" is now "Doin' Time," and a few other songs are rearranged). It also has a second disc with music videos, alternate takes, acoustic versions, remixes, rarities, etc. In addition, it has the lyrics printed in the liner notes as well as a piece that explains why this version is different from the original. Very cool. Pony Up! is an all-girl pop group, but they aren't cutesy and bubbly, they can actually write music. SUBLIME - Sublime (Deluxe Edition) (5/5 - Universal) PONY UP! - Make Love to the Judges With Your Eyes (3/5 - Dim Mak) 09/13/06 - Ever wonder what Hella would sound like acoustic? Wonder no more. I actually like it better than most of their electrified material. Loch Vostok plays several technical/progressive styles, but the album lacks cohesion and there is a good amount of cheese involved. Tjolgtjar is a black metal band, but they do some wacky shit that actually really works in the bands favor. However, the parts that aren't weird are pretty typical and boring. HELLA - Acoustics EP (4/5 - 5RC) LOCH VOSTOK - Destruction Time Again! (3/5 - Escapi) TJOLGTJAR - The Tjolgtjarian Mass (2/5 - Baphomet) 09/12/06 - Drugs of Faith are super badass. They play old-school hardcore/grind with a punk attitude and awesome vocals. Think of Benumb, Napalm Death, and Black Flag thrown in a blender. Commando is a really solid rock and roll band with hardcore influences... or are they a hardcore band that knows how to rock? Either way you look at it, they are high-energy and fun! Clifton sucks. They play generic melodic metalcore with generic vocals and generic breakdowns. They are a poor man's Darkest Hour at best. DRUGS OF FAITH - Drugs of Faith (5/5 - Selfmadegod) COMMANDO - Talk of the Town (3/5 - Cyclop Media) CLIFTON - We Never Change (1/5 - Abacus) 09/09/06 - Sorry for the inactivity. My internet at work has been busted and that's when I get on here the most and write most of my reviews. But it's working now, so it should be business as usual. Lye By Mistake have the same disease that BTBAM has, the TBCWS (talented but can't write songs) disease. Anyway, they play technical hardcore similar to DEP, but they add all sorts of other shit to the mix. Calling All Monsters plays no-frills rock. SSM do 60's style guitar pop, but aren't very catchy or interesting. Deadsoil is a German metalcore band that sounds like other German metalcore bands you might know (Caliban, Heaven Shall Burn). LYE BY MISTAKE - Arrangements for Fulminating Vective (3/5 - Lambgoat) CALLING ALL MONSTERS - The Traps That Work Best (3/5 - Turn) SZYMANSKI SHETTLER MORRIS (SSM) - SSM (2/5 - Alive) DEADSOIL - Sacrifice (2/5 - LifeForce) 08/24/06 - Two more good songs from Exit the King accompanied by some pretty decent stuff from Man is Mostly Water. Clitorture plays groovy death/grind with slick breakdowns and Goreality plays a little more traditional death/grind with a high level of technicality, but nothing too awe-inspiring. Rise Against play commercially accessible punk/hardcore, and while they are way better than most of their peers, they are still far from great. EXIT THE KING - Split w/ Man Is Mostly Water (5/5 - Howard) MAN IS MOSTLY WATER - Split w/ Exit the King (4/5 - Howard) CLITORTURE - Disassembling the Human Form (split w/ Goreality) (4/5 - Pathos) GOREALITY - Disassembling the Human Form (split w/ Clitorture) (3/5 - Pathos) RISE AGAINST - The Sufferer and the Witness (3/5 - Geffen)
