Year in Review

Reflection

January – Let’s see, I had just gotten back from my first trip snowboarding, and our youth group had an amazing bonfire.  The purpose was to get rid of old trash, and it did do that, it was a turning point, a new beginning.  And some of you remember the story, but the bonfire experience was very much like a burning bush for me.  “…put off thy shoes from thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.”  Exodous 3:5

February – tennis was in full swing.  Pretty much everyday was practice and tournaments on Fridays.  I didn’t get to go HFL, but hopefully I will in ’07.

March – Darrell Tyler Killen – November 21, 1989 to March 9, 2006.  16 years, 3 months, 18 days.  I was at tennis practice when I heard.  That night, for the first time, I heard this song that now has a special meaning to me.  I am a flower quickly fading, here today and gone tomorrow, a wave tossed in the ocean, a vapor in the wind.

March also held spring break.  I went up to Tyler, and had a summit reunion with Jess, Becky, Leah, and all of Jess’s family.  And that week I actually watched pride and prejudice.  Pretty good movie.  Started my application to the air force academy.

April – My sister’s 21st birthday.  Traveled to regionals in tennis and computer science UIL.  Went to the SLY meetings.  “One thing we all have in common is the need for significance.  We all want our lives to count, to make a difference in the world.  But our quest for significance becomes problematic when we hold on too tightly to our dreams and fail to look at God’s plan for each of us.  We lose sight of the fact that God’s way is always better than our way.  True significance begins when we surrender our lives to God.”

May – Say goodbye to all the seniors and hello to summer break!  Class of 2006 Graduation night, salutatorian Daniel Whitton left us with these words of wisdom:  “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”  Proverbs 3:5-6

Valedictorian Megan McCallan shared words from Robert Frost, his poem, “The Road Not Taken.”

June – Back to be a page at the Republican State Convention in San Antonio.  Back up to the Summit in downtown Manitou.  “Some of you don’t even have the foggiest.”  “Aim at heaven and you will get the earth thrown in, aim at earth and you will get neither.”- CS Lewis.  I hiked up Pikes Peak!!!  And got to visit the Air Force Academy again!  And my ‘sister,’ beth was at summit too!  And I made a bunch of new friends at summit this year!  The later part of june was for Student Life Camp in Ruston, LA.  Phroneo Christou, the attitude of Christ.  Phroneo Prayerou!!   Phillipians 2:5ff, “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.”  “I’m a fire!  I’m a flood!  I’m a revolution!”

July – Started it off with a Rangers/Astros game!  And the stros won it!  Began the memorization of James chapter one.  “Consider it pure joy my brothers whenever you face trials of many kinds…”  And also, 1st Corinthians 10:13, “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man.  And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear.  But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.”  Remodeled the master bathroom…good hard work.  Watched Superman Returns in theaters!

August – The jeep died.  The day before school started, the jeep died.  Good thing I already started rebuilding an engine.  I started my senior year and became a cross country runner.  Got a pretty full class schedule too.   Played the rest of the southeast texas summer tennis schedule.  My sister graduated from Nursing School and got her LVN!  Kristen got engaged on my parents anniversary!

September – Big 18 years old!  Runnin CC, Buna football doing well.  Played the Annual Labor Day tennis tournament!  Finished # 3 in southeast texas boys 18s singles rankings!  Saw Invincible!  Busy with school.  Anniversary of Rita.  Start reading “Godless” by Ann Coulter.  Astros made it interesting up till the end of the season.  Oh so close.

October – Busy with school. Went to an info session with my congressman.  More CC.  Studying for the SAT.  Pep rallies.  School School School.  “An original story by Jonathan Bradley, The Modern Prodigal Son.”  Homecoming Parade!  Senior Float!

November -  Texas Aggies Football Game!  Got my app in to aggieland.  Thanksgiving, finished the infamous government term paper.  Took the SAT for the final time.  Ultimate at night!  School School School.  Senior Pep Rally.  Comforted by Psalm 62.  My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him.  He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.”  Fightin Texas Aggies -12, t.u. – 7!  Enough Said.  Got to vote for the first time!

December – here we are.  National Honor Society.  Jingle Bell Ball, first school dance.  Turned down by senator John Cornyn, interviewed by Congressman Ted Poe’s board.  Working more on the Jeep.  My last OA Fall Fellowship while living at home.  White Elephant party, I brought the white elephant.  Fun Hay Ride.  SLY meeting.  Measure for Letterman Jacket.  Last Christmas while living at home.  Got a bunch of Superman presents, tennis balls, and tickets to the 2007 US Mens Clay Court Championships Semifinals in Houston this coming April.

This has been a full year.  Full of firsts, full of lasts, and full of agains.  Full of potential and full of hope.  Full of inspiration, full of learning, and had its fair share of mistakes.  Will I miss 2006?  That is yet to be known.  I’m in no way ready for 2007, but here it comes, and I’m anxious just the same.  To my friends, I love you.  May God bless you and yours.  May we have a lifetime of memories together!

Goodbye 2006, hello future!

"When dreams they seem so far away,

Your soul can feel so low.

But love is never far away;

Your heart won't be alone….

For auld lang syne, my dear.
For auld lang syne.
We'll take a cup of kindness yet
For auld lang syne."

Signing off,

Jonathan, Joe Nathan, Jonat, JB, Bradley, Joaquin, … anything but Sue!!!
