Strange Interlude

Sometimes when you're in a house by yourself, your mind does strange things. Well, frankly, for some of us, that happens a lot, whatever the excuse. Anyway, I'm sitting here, playing Solitaire and letting my mind roam the universe, when I hear--a noise. Didn't I? Strange, kind of a--well, dragging? The wind's blowing outside, and the mobile home is groaning and settling and cricking and cracking, but that's all familiar. Something else --the coffeemaker? I turn it off. Play some more, but this time I'm alert. Could the fridge motor be trying to give up? It's almost like a panting sound this time.
Cat's on the chair, sound asleep. There's really no such thing as a watch cat, unfortunately. If a burglar burst in here, Beau would probably wake up in time to save himself, but I'd definitely be on my own.
Nobody here. I think of the old days, when my husband, though sick, and inclined to sleep through hurricanes and earthquakes, was still a solace. Even after I had to get rid of the gun he kept under the bed, I could trust him to take care of any burglars that came around. He'd have clubbed them with his oxygen tank, if nothing else. But now, I'm--hmm, was that a beep?
ET? In a Senior Citizen's mobile home park? Now, that would be a story, wouldn't it.
Sort of a tiny little mechanical plea for help--this is getting spooky.
------
Morning now. The tv is on. Somebody is running a saw next door. Yet again--a sound. Nearby, in the house. A strange little, sort of personal sound that tweaks at your nerves. Where could it be coming from?
---Okay, we've all been through this, but you'd have recognized it faster, I bet. The cell phone. Still in my purse from last Monday. Wanting recharging. Gasping out its last little electronic SOS.
With all those fancy ring tones, you'd think they could program a cell phone to say--or even sing--"Help! Come and get me! I'm dying!"
Or at least, have it cry out my favorite Last Words line--"I'm Melllllllting! Melllllllllllting! mmmmmeeelllllllllllllttttttiiiiing" Even I could figure out what that meant.

Expect a long comment as I've just read both of your posts. Re. the noises - things seem to go bump here too and not just in the night. ! The cats that live here wouldn't be any help as they sleep through everything. I sometimes wander round trying to find where the noises are coming from- to no avail ! It's one way to keep active though I often think I should write about my life as I'm sure my children have forgotten half of the things I did when I was younger - would make an interesting eulogy too better than any they would think of !. Ladies in shorts ? I've seen photos of women older than me wearing shorts while on holiday- not an edifying sight - wouldn't frighten any man with a pacemaker Still very cold here and likely to remain so until the middle of next week. the cell phone is doing what his boss tells him to do,  make money for him (the provider) . If the batteries are down he cannot make money, does it?

"Call, call, don't forget it." he says, and every time you call and , if  there is nobody to answer he will say" This nummer is not answering ...."and I am always to late stopping it, and them he tells me that my account has been charged with 20 dollarcent. "Thank you very much provider. You're the worst of burglars"

I can identify with your strange sound experience.  In fact as soon as I read your blog, I checked my cell phone to make sure it didn't need charging!  My poor old dog is so deaf and blind he would be of no help if someone broke in.  In fact a man just came and rang the doorbell.  Pal is sleeping (note "is" not "way") almost next to the door.  He was never aware I answered the door, took a brochure about the man's wife who is running for office, chatted for a minute and closed the door.  The last time he realized someone strange was in the house (a repairman) he barked quite loudly.  The problem was he was barking as the man left after being in the house for half an hour!

Our cell is so old it makes no sound it will just quit when battery is dead or dying. I told Verizon yesterday if they don't stop bugging us about getting a new phone we will change providers.

When my cell phone first did that I thought it was the smoke alarm starting to do its thing.  So many sounds to keep up with .

Dear Joy, thank you so much for your understanding and encouragement.  I will add your granddaughter to my prayers.  What is her name?  It took me a long time to decide to blog about Beth's mental illness.  Unfortunately there are people who treat it on the same level as being a leper.  Beth has improved with treatment over the years, so that she no longer cuts herself.  She describes depression as painful.  Since the cutting was more painful than the depression, it was a way of stopping the depression pain for a bit.  Beth is also a cancer survivor and has serious back problems.  Not too good for someone who will bre 41 next Tuesday.  Fortuanately, Ian is very supportive.

Hi Hat, AOL kicked me off when I tried to listen to the YouTube thing, and then tangled me up til I had to shut off the computer, so I haven't been very communicative this morning.
