---------------is a nickname applied to the state and inhabitants of North Carolina, as well as the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's athletic teams.

The exact etymology of the nickname is unknown, but most experts believe its roots come from the fact that tar, pitch and turpentine created from the vast pine forests were one of North Carolina's most important exports early in the state's history.

Because the exact history of the term is unknown, many legends have developed to explain the history of the term. Some people believe it to be a nickname given during the U.S. Civil War, due to the state's importance on the Confederate side. "The North Carolina's troops stuck to their ranks like they had tar on their heels," you will hear some Southerns say.

History of term

In its early years as a colony, North Carolina settlements became an important source of the naval stores tar, pitch, and turpentine especially for the English navy. At one time, an estimated 100,000 barrels of tar and pitch were shipped annually to England. Historians Hugh Lefler and Albert Newsome claim in North Carolina: the History of a Southern State that North Carolina led the world in production of naval stores, from about 1720 to 1870. Tar and pitch were largely used to paint the bottom of wooden British ships in order to both seal the ship and to prevent shipworm from damaging the hull.

At the time, tar was created by piling up pine logs and burning them until hot oil seeped out from a canal. The vast production of tar from North Carolina led many, including Walt Whitman, to give the derisive nickname of "Tarboilers" to the residents of North Carolina. North Carolina was nicknamed the "Tar and Turpentine State" because of this industry.

Somehow, these terms evolved until the nickname Tar Heel was used to refer to residents of North Carolina and gained prominence during the American Civil War. During this time, the nickname Tar Heel was a pejorative, similar to how the nickname white trash is used today, but starting around 1865, the term began to be used as a source of pride.

Legendary explanations

River fording by General Cornwallis

According to this legend, the troops of British General Cornwallis during the American Revolutionary War were fording what is now known as the Tar River between Rocky Mount and Battleboro when they discovered that tar had been dumped into the stream to impede the crossing of British soldiers. When they finally got across the river, they found their feet completely black with tar. Thus, the soldiers observed that anyone who waded through North Carolina rivers would acquire "tar heels."

Ability to hold ground

In the third volume of Walter Clark's Histories of the Several Regiments from North Carolina in the Great War, the author explains that the nickname came from the North Carolina troops ability to hold their ground during a battle. According to the book, North Carolina troops held their ground during a battle in Virginia during the American Civil War while other supporting troops retreated. After the battle, supporting troops asked the victorious North Carolinians: "Any more tar down in the Old North State, boys?" and they replied: "No, not a bit; old Jeff's bought it all up." The supporting troops continued: "Is that so? What is he going to do with it?" The North Carolinian troops' response: "He is going to put it on you'ns heels to make you stick better in the next fight."

-Reluctant secession-

The State of North Carolina was one of the last states to secede from the United States of America (Tennessee was the last to do so) and as a result the state was nicknamed the "reluctant state" by others in the south. The joke circulating around at the beginning of the war went something like this: " Got any tar?"- "No, Jeff Davis has bought it all."- "What for?"- "To put on you fellow's heels to make you stick." As the war continued, many North Carolinian troops developed smart replies to this term of ridicule. Such as when the 4th Texas Infantry lost its flag at Sharpsburg. Passing by the 6th North Carolina a few days afterwards, the Texans called out, "Tar Heels!", and the reply was, "Ifin you had had some tar on your heels, you would have brought your flag back from Sharpsburg."

Robert E. Lee quotation

During the late unhappy war between the States it was sometimes called the "Tar-heel State," because tar was made in the State, and because in battle the soldiers of North Carolina stuck to their bloody work as if they had tar on their heels, and when General Lee said, "God bless the Tar-heel boys," they took the name.

A letter found in 1991 by North Carolina State Archivist David Olson somewhat supports this theory that Lee might have stated something similar to this. The letter dated from 1864 (in the North Carolina "Tar Heel Collection") a Colonel Joseph Engelhard described the Battle of Ream's Station in Virginia. In that letter he states: "It was a 'Tar Heel' fight, and ... we got Gen'l Lee to thanking God, which you know means something brilliant."

BASICALLY ITS BECAUSE NC HAS A LOT OF TAR IN IT.

well after last night

my sinuses decided to explode and take over my entire body

they are forcing me to blow my nose 24/7 sleep with my mouth open

and force me to stay home at school

a typical day in the life

of VERITY LYNN WOODY

My day typically starts at 6:50

the house is freezing cold

(inthewinteranyway)

and i dont like waking up in the cold

as well as stand in the chilly wind

waiting for the heated chaos of my bus

i usually listen to a morning show

called the morning brew

where they play covers of songs

its pretty funny listening what the crazy cover bands do to perfectly fine songs

after riding the bus i head into school

mr. hasquin tries to trip almost every morning because im so sleepy

and almost all the teachers try to ask me how my sisters are doing..

*sigh*

i get to my locker. get my spanish.

then i talk to the usual circle

josie megan daniel emily jessica jennifer jacob rudy maranda ciara kirsten and krisha the twins

sometimes its more but i dont remeber who comes over

then josie and megan have to go drive (lucky)

and i have to go to espanol....

i sit next to daniel and lindsay so i guess its ok

yesterday we played charades

Mr. Mielke is probably the worst band teacher ever

I sit by just Sam Lucker this year

its kind of sad cuz Mr Mielke seperated me Sam and Katy

for some stupid reason...

and were the best trumpets in the band

oh well

its pretty fun in band anyway

everyday i play piano w/ someone different

and we just got new music

i go about 20 steps to the chemistry room

ive recently got really interested in chemistry

and its kind of hard not to with mrs gaffney as a teacher

ok, ill admit it

I hated her at first

she was soooo dry at teaching

but eventually you get used to it

and enjoy it

....itsweird.

but the elements and everything are really cool

i really like the labs we do too

and last week i did my first lab write up

i felt so important

we pile into buses

walk back to my house

im drained by that time

so i dont really talk to mi padres

thursdays are scholar bowl

last night was amaaaazing

i got two tossups

got 5 bucks from joey and bought pizza for me and josie and some juice

and THEN to top the night off

IT WAS SNOWING!!!!!

i was so excited

i ran outside and wrote my name in big letters with my feet

then the guys scraped their feet straight through it to make me mad

i got back though with several snowballs

muahahahaaa

*cough*

then i got a ride with josie

and we witness a truck go into a ditch on the way back

it was exciting?

it was cool though because we were driving the opposite direction of the snow

so it looked like we were going in warp speed

with millions of stars shooting by

OH YEAH

MR HASQUIN IS TEACHING JAPANESE HISTORY NEXT YEAR!!!

i am SO excited

i packed a snowball last night and brought it inside to the fellow scholarbowlians

then megan ran up and told me that

i got so excited i ran up to mr hasquin and asked him if i could be in it

"sure......is that a snowball verity?"

so yeah

im pretty pumped

...

am i forgetting anything?

OH YEAH

I GOT ANOTHER NEPHEW WEDNESDAY NIGHT!!!

he was so cute

he was looking at us almost the entire time

(before he got poked and prodded anyway)

and after 15 minutes of "awww"s and "he looks just like tom!"

i said

"wouldnt it be funny if that wasnt actually wendys baby?"

the nurse hadnt told us he was isaac thomas range so i thought of that randomly haha

good job wendy and jason

hes a pretty cute guy

it was worth the wait

me and candace watching the hilarious ratatouille

....it was a very interesting part i think...

ok so two months ago i made the worlds longest xanga post

and by a cruel twist of fate

the internet is turned off

and the laptop freezes on my post

i freak out

then i eventually shut the laptop screen and go to bed

so dont get completely mad at me

at least i tried

it was such a good post too...

it had my entire school schedule

and some stories i know i will never remember again

school update=going very well

im getting my grades upheee

oh yeah and i have a veryvery sharp pain in my hip/pelvis/back area

it hurts crazy bad when i walk

everyone was freaking out at school when i was trying to walk around

welp nothing new here

not much point in my posts cuz

i dont have a camera

i cant drive to exciting places

and i dont really do anything else than go to school :

go to stevens house (aka cold dismal bus stop)

ususally we dont talk to each other cuz were either too

cold

mad that we have to go to school

shocked that we had to wake up this early

we get on the bus

i talk to steven mostly

cause he has a bajillion stories to tell me like every day

i just nod and occasionly say something

cause if i try to talk about myself hell just go back to himself anyway

we get to school by the front doors

i either go to the table in lunch and talk to my friends or go to the freshman

hallway and hang out there

my first hour is dumb

science....blllaaaaaahhhh

mr. mosley was better than my teacher this semester

mrs. borkowski

she is evil

she reminds me of a little rat/mouse

were learning how the sun was made "billion and billions of years ago"

ch...Riiiiight....

i sit next to cody w

one of the biggest meatheads in the school

hes always saying bad stuff right in front of mrs borkowski and pretends he didnt know she was there

and russell s

one of the craziest redheads i know

he shouts EXTREMELY random things during class and laughs like a maniac

maranda is the only person i like to talk to in there but shes always tardy cause her sister gets her to school to late...[cough]

my next hour is engliish

i walk right across the hall with maranda and stand right next to the doorway and talk to her and other people who pass through the door until the bell rings

im gradually beginning to not like mr. delong

hes hard to describe

but he talks about weird stuff every day

i cant figure him out

i wouldnt say hes my favorite teacher but at least i feel like im at

least learning SOMETHING

right now were discussing poetry

its interesting

i like it

its weird cause ive always thought it was dumb before

hmm

ok third hour

i have to walk ALL the way from senior to freshman hallway but its worth it

i really like spanish

im not gonna lie to ya

mrs hasse is reallllly cool shes laid back shes funny and she never

raises her voice

shes really calm. i wish all teachers were like that

its really not necessary to yell SHUT UP!!! unless your a bad teacher

right now were not really doing anything

OH but i made this awesome national foreign language week poster for her

its really cool

fourth hour

i go to my locker and dump all my stuff in it 'cept my math books

i either wait for megan and josie or i just leave cause i dont feel like waiting

i go to lunch

i stand in line with m&j

lunch is either REALLY AWESOME or just "what were they thinking???"

i ALWAYS say hi to betty cause shes the bomb

haha one time while we were voting for homecoming queen or something tyler prough shouted in the lunch room

that betty should be the queen

haha i thought that was sweet

after lunch we walk down that big hallway to DUM DUM DUM

band!!!! me megan and josie try to get in a few laughs before we get there

were usually late but mr. mielke doesnt count us tardy

he just says a "funny" remark whilst swinging his "fizzle stick" [baton]

we talk, get our instruments, talk some more and eventually sit down

our trumpet row is this from end to middle

sam, me, katy, timmy, zack, kevin, alex, whitney, and daniel

so its just sam me and katy [the freshman] having to face off the upperclassmen

its been really bad lately cause there is this one "folk song" part that only we three have to play by ourselves

its bad...

the beginning is basically silence

and then we have to come in

ugh...it makes me queezy thinking about it

but we have good times anyway

recently we were so bored that i invented the "who can keep their legs off the floor in a straight line for

the longest" game.

we had booty cramps the rest of the day

then theres the always fun event where you try to speak to someone halfway across the room and the other

person has to guess if you are talking to them AND they have to interperet what you are saying by reading your

lips. its pretty awesome. i always lose though haha

theres other stuff but its "you had to be there" stuff

after we play a couple of songs we wait and talk til the bell rings

then theres math

right now were going back to the basics and working on converting units

i guess mrs pranger is starting a new unit or something

[mrs pranger is awesome as usual fyi]

a change in schedule is 6th hour

i dropped art 3d cause im not good with sculptures and stuff

and i thought id take health and get it over with

mr. bennett is really cool

i feel sorry for him though

cause we have the most DENSE people in my class

i will never get why people think its so funny to be so stupid

guh...

well anyway

were learning about the eyes and the ears right now

their really complex ya know?

its pretty boring though and i usually time to catch a nap in there

next hour is world history

where order is tossed to the wind and chaos rules every minute

seriously though

that class is pretty laid back

and the only time i know that mrs. turner freaked out was when i had gone to the bathroom...haha

and that concludes my day

i go home on the bus where i listen to little kids who think they are cool and cuss

i usually listen to my cd player though and pretend to fall asleep so steven wont talk to me

i walk home making my way through the overhanging branches of our many trees in the yard

where i finally get home.....ah sweet home

well thats a typical day in the life of verity. exciting isnt it?
